Unfortunately Malham has recently seen more than it's fair share of misbehaving idiots. I'd steer clear if it's sunny.

I do find all this confusion around exercising quite amusing. I know I shouldn't but I do. The government pass an Act of Parliament very quickly (and I don't blame them for that) which precipitated the Lockdown. But as a consequence of that we have had a whole range of quasi-autonomous groups that have then done things or provided what they see as helpful guidelines that have done neither and have in most cases resulted in adding to the confusion.

The Act is Law the guidelines are just that. I, as a dog owner, have been told a whole range of stuff that I should or should not be doing. I can only take them out once a day, I can't drive to where I normally exercise them, they must remain on a lead. All of which is complete nonsense and unsurprisingly is not mentioned in the Act.

And of course, as a result, certain Councils and normally well meaning groups, are falling over themselves in their attempts at virtue signalling to act out these spurious guidelines and quite often are making it worse.

For example, I drive a few minutes into town to the car park for the weekly shop. It is only small, two levels, but the council have shut the top level, no one knows why. Not content with that they have shut one of the two stair wells for entrance and egress. So, we are now all squashed onto one level and forced to use just one stairwell making any real attempts at social distancing almost impossible. Go figure.

I could go on. The closing of parks and other outdoor sites just forces more people onto what is left!!!!!

My, my, people need to stop being so judgemental. Half the time they only know half the facts anyway. The law is really basic and just states that going outside to exercise is a reasonable reason to be out. You must be alone or only with other members of your household. Everything else is just noise. I’ve followed this subject closely since day 1 and there’s some excellent points and rhetorical questions been made by many people in the media and on social media. I think people should consider them, but ultimately it’s down to the individual to make the moral judgement calls, not for others to get on their high horse and criticise. Things like...
  • Should your exercise take you far enough away from home so that if you got an injury that's reasonably minor mean you’d need emergency services help to get you home?
  • Is now the time for running/walking/mountain biking up fells with the risks that it can bring?
  • Is your exercise likely to take you to place where keeping to social distancing guidelines would be pretty much impossible?
The essential travel one is interesting as the government have been vague about this and the latest police guidelines have muddied the waters. Based on that, for many Burnley fans travelling to Malham for a full day of exercise would be seen as fine. You’re back to the rhetorical questions above though.

Ultimately though, many people are still using supermarkets which is obviously a necessity for us. You’re at far, far more risk of passing on or catching COVID 19 in Asda as you are exercising in the upper reaches of the Aire valley.

It is extremely difficult trying to get through to ignorant, selfish people. It is like banging your head against a brick wall as selfish people do not realise they are selfish. But this debate is very simple.

Government guidance as of 16th April urges people to "stay local", use open spaces near their home and avoid unnecessary travel.

I'm not sure you need a degree or an high IQ to understand that sentence but if anyone would like me to break it down for them in even more basic terms (if possible) please ask.

Imagine accusing people of being ignorant, when you're ignorant yourself. This is from an official police document.

I am dealing with ignorant morons on here then. Charlie you've forgotten to cut and paste the other half of that document No need to worry, I will sort it for you. Again, I will guide you to the first sentence which for some reason (ignorance, selfishness) people cant understand. Again please ask if you need it breaking down in simple terms.

However, exercise outside came with the following guidelines:
stay local and use open spaces near to your home where possible – do not travel unnecessarily
you should only go outside alone or with members of your own household
keep at least two metres apart from anyone outside your household at all times
gatherings of more than two in parks or other public spaces have been banned and the police will enforce this
if you have a garden, make use of the space for exercise and fresh air
take hygiene precautions when you are outside, and wash your hands as soon as you are back indoors

Shame on you all for encouraging this guy.

He lives in GARGRAVE now (as he had recently moved there just before this Covid 19 sh*t) you divot ... so Cycling the 5 to 6 Miles to Malham comes within the remit set out by Gov guidelines.

If you could have been bothered to read his posts you would have seen that.

Define "local". The government doesn't, so people are taking "local" to mean that if you are riding a bike for an hour you can ride out for half an hour and back for half an hour. How far out do you think he should ride before turning back?

I think the OP needs to provide some stats on his cycling speed.

If he can show the ability to cover 14 miles within the hour then this sounds an appropriate form of Covid-19 exercise.

If not then the OP owes pushpinpuppy an apology and should find a more manageable cycle route.

Problem solved :D

I think its pretty obvious to the normal human being that "local" means being in the area you live. Did I really have to explain that?

Oh yes. How big is "the area you live" in miles? How far in miles can you travel from your house?

Now’s the best time to be cycling. The weather is fine and the roads are shorn of the amount of motor vehicles that make it such a dangerous pastime.

The only quantification I have seen was that provided by Michael Gove who said an hour walking, 30 mintes running something in between for cycling....but it was too off the cuff to be considered authoritative. Whatever you think off Pushpin's attitude I can't help thinking that he is correctly interpreting the spirit of the rgulations....there are too many people (not necessarily on here) who are selecting the bits of advice that suit their own agendas.

pasted from the gov.uk website.
One form of exercise a day either alone or with people you live with only. This might include running, walking or cycling. You should not drive to get to the place you are planning to exercise.
that seems extremely clear.
no restrictions on time limits or distance.
just add common sense to this and the vast majority of people can exercise daily and fulfill physical and mental requirements wiothout breaking any guideline rules.
personally though I think we all should know what level of exercise we need to function properly.
providing social distancing is adhered to then the only negative is potential injury needing hospitalisation and obviously further stretching the nhs.
I accept this isnt ideal but from a personal viewpoint any accident i was to have would have to be bad for me to accept being taken to hospital.
we are going to be stuck with social distancing until a vaccine is found so exercise must must must start to play a big part in our lives if it isnt already.
failure to do this will lead to an array of stress related conditions in abundance which will definitely stretch our nhs further.
there is very strong and clear evidence that exercise strengthens the immune system and that alone tells you just how important it is.

Went out for a two hour bike this afternoon using the country roads to get out towards Rugeley. Saw a few cars, quite a few walkers to whom I gave a very wide berth, came home thirty miles later feeling brilliant.
Technically, I guess, the ride was too long but, to me, if I'm seeing far fewer people whilst out cycling for two hours than I would in, or waiting to get in, the local Co-op and if I'm certainly more than 2m away from them, no harm done.
I'm realistic not reckless.

No Beddie, Skipton. If you know a plumber that lives opposite the Vic though you will know my brother in law.

Over the last weekend 7 cyclists from the York area where fined by police after they were caught drinking beer in the beer garden of a closed pub in Malham!
I couldn't imagine drinking beer and cycling combined. It's tough enough when sober. Lets hope the idiots were hit hard with fines. Malham was very very quiet when I went and all the approach roads.

What we need is some footage of the cycle journey to Malham, on YouTube. Then we can all enjoy the ride. A beer at the end too!

I am now questioning all the 'rules'. They are not good for our 'wellbeing'.

Cycling on your own - no harm.

Driving somewhere, parking and walking without close interaction - no harm.

Staying in and climbing walls, harmful.

Yes, but as with a lot of the rules, they can be broken by individuals without harm. But if everyone took the same view then we’d be in bother. Take your example of driving to a beauty spot, parking and going for a walk. That’s fine if it’s just you, but if thousands of other people have the same idea then it becomes problematic.

Given folks penchant for following orders, no doubt the 2 m rule would be upheld. There is always somewhere else, if place 1 is busy.

exactly how I see it Ian
some of the rules seem to lack sense to me although on the other hand I realise its tricky to make sure we all keep our guard up. The figures of people climbing those walls internally will never be a stat though but that will be the really harmful thing in all of this. Thats why people adopting common sense should be welcomed.
For instance, I have cycled in some beautiful countryside recently and seen cars pull up and driver disappear with dog and or family into the countryside. Strictly speaking breaking the rules but that family or any member of would be massively more at risk in a supermarket and I have no doubt that their country walk will help them enormously. Good luck to those who are trying to look after their families in a responsible manner is what I say.

If everyone in Burnley drove into the countryside outside Burnley and went for a walk there, they would meet a lot fewer people and be a lot more spread out than they would if they stopped in Burnley. The countryside is a big place.

If they all go to the same spot, it would be a bit tricky perhaps. But even then, in the fresh air and sunshine there's possibly a better chance of not catching anything from someone passing by in the opposite direction, than there is in town.

It depends where abouts in the countryside really doesn’t it? For example, where I live the people would flock to the Cow and Calf, Ilkley or The Chevin. Both of these places are in open countryside but have specific car parks and walking routes that hundreds of people would be using. The likes of Roundhay Park would be absolutely swamped with people. The lockdown measures allow for people to go out for exercise, like i have done with a run this morning - not for a family day out.
