I watched this as a kid back in 1970 but can't remember this incident. It's the sort of thing that should be burnt into your memory cells forever and the most appalling piece of refereeing I've ever seen.

It was 1970, Bell should have been ashamed he went to ground so easily and should have spent the day in his village stocks when he got back home

Remember watching it at the time.
England were coasting. Took off Bobby Charlton and West Germany all grew 6 inches.

Even Burnley would've been awarded a penalty for that. Beckenbauer absolutely cleans him out and the ref is stood about 10 yards away looking straight at it. Absolutely robbed.

Have you not noticed the theme in major tournaments?Stan Tastic wrote: ↑Sun Apr 19, 2020 8:38 pmEven Burnley would've been awarded a penalty for that. Beckenbauer absolutely cleans him out and the ref is stood about 10 yards away looking straight at it. Absolutely robbed.

Then there was Lineker throwing himself to the ground when England should have lost to Cameroon.

Rooney '04 I presume you mean. We certainly don't seem to get the rub of the green in tournaments. Why on earth did he take Charlton off in this game.Tricky Trevor wrote: ↑Sun Apr 19, 2020 10:23 pmHave you not noticed the theme in major tournaments?

One thing I did notice is how little the appeal was and no shouting and screaming at the referee for such a stone wall penaltyStan Tastic wrote: ↑Sun Apr 19, 2020 8:18 pmI watched this as a kid back in 1970 but can't remember this incident. Re: Anyone remember this happening in the England v West Germany 1970 World Cup quarter-final?
It's no secret why he took Charlton off. It was because Ramsey thought the game was won and with very high temperatures and altitude in Mexico he wanted to ensure that Charlton, (our oldest and most influential player) was fresh for the semi-final.
It's exactly the opposite of what Dyche would have done with his "one game at a time mantra" and was a big mistake by Ramsey, (even though there was some logic in it).
Charlton wasn't happy: “I’d never felt so well,” Charlton later said. “I felt I could run all day, even though we were in Léon and 6,000ft up.”

Interesting. You'd think the one game at a time mantra would be all the more relevant in the knock out stages of a World Cup. This was way before my time and it's only since this lockdown I've delved into this tournament.nil_desperandum wrote: ↑Mon Apr 20, 2020 8:32 amIt's no secret why he took Charlton off. Charlton was subbed at 2-1 which is even more mystifying as there were twenty minutes to go and surely Ramsey wouldn't think it was game over at that point. The ref was Argentinian, which might not have helped given Ramsey's remarks after the 1966 match.
