Flashing satellites outside now
Just been told to go outside and look at the sky as there's loads of satellites flashing.
I went out and there's loads.
What's going on?

Is it something to do with Elon Musk and his SpaceX Starlink satellites? (some kind of internet project I think)

Just had a look out and didn’t see anything. Venus shining really brightly though if you look to the west fairly low to the horizon.

Re: Flashing satellites outside now
You can see Starlink pass over tonight - Monday 9.55pm - amazing sight!
However, while there are 60 in Starlink at the moment, there will soon be between 10,000 and 40,000. When you look up at the sky, you will see satellites not stars. It's going to make naval star navigation almost impossible for fishermen and astronomy and star photography very difficult.
There are plans to put gigantic tv screens around the orbit to advise Coca Cola and BMW to us.
Looks like human are f****** up the night sky now!

Yes that's a good link, it gives a list of all the timings and directions from where you are (if youve allowed a location finder).Devils_Advocate wrote: ↑Sun Apr 19, 2020 10:47 pmJust found this and dont know whats going on but says they were visible to us tonight about 9.30pm and 11pm.

There's a decent video on The Daily Mail site to give an indication of what to look for https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech ... urope.html

Re: Flashing satellites outside now
I saw them tonight but disappointing as all very individual satellites, I was expecting a 'train' like on the photographs.
As a bonus though I did see two kosher meteors.

Brightest thing in the sky is Venus. pretty much due west about 30 degrees elevation.
Saw 3 satellites in c 20 minutes, a bit disappointing.

Re: Flashing satellites outside now
Didn't catch any satellites (maybe too much light pollution even here in Long Preston) ... Venus very prominent (even without her blue jeans) but saw a couple of meteors .

We went outside for about 20 mins, it was brilliant to watch, such a large area of the sky covered in satellites. We spotted two moving very quickly and one other moving at speed leaving a trail behind it.

Re: Flashing satellites outside now
There's a meteor shower (Lyrids) at the moment maybe that was the speedy thing leaving a trail? Lyrids are caused by the earth's orbit going through particles that came from the tail of comet C/1861 G1 (Thatcher). It visited inner solar system last in 1861 but we're still picking up the debris each year at this time. The comet's sun orbit takes 415.5 years so it wont be back with more dust for us to vacuum up til late 2276.
Re: Flashing satellites outside now
We saw about 10 satellites over a period of a few minutes from Trawden (and one meteor).

Re: Flashing satellites outside now
Aye, Venus is bossing the night sky at the moment. No moon to be seen and the 3 big boys (Saturn, Jupiter, Mars) all just early morning stars- all close together rising in the south east at c 04.00 just before the sun rises and lights them out.

Watch Starlink’s latest launch from Cape Canaveral tonight at 20:30. The train of Satellites should be visible overhead, from the same launch, fifteen minutes later!!

Went to check the sky again.
Out back I looked up for Venus and there was Aphrodite!
Nothing else.
Looked out the front. Nothing in the sky but thought I saw someone scramble across the school roof, opposite!
Went outside, rang 999.
Could not see anyone, then heard a voice. Shone my torch and got the silhouette of one young lad and ge was talking to mate(s).
Rang 999 again and confirmed sighting.
Then two lads were banging on the roof, I think jumping up and down, then they ran across. Jumped down at the rear and then I saw them disappear up to the downs.
They had no idea about satellites or starbursts...or perhaps they were getting a close up!
Police came and shone their torches but did not fancy a walk up the downs!
Exciting this star and satellite spotting!
