Player pictures around Turf Moor
You may recall that last August, starting on the day we played Leeds, a vote was held to select the players fans wanted to see on the stand walls around the exterior of Turf Moor. The result of the vote was announced but ten months on, nothing has happened and, out of the blue, I've had an email about it today.
It's not been forgotten and it is hoped to have the first pics ready for the start of the season - there will be more news soon.
The players chosen were
George Beel
Tommy Boyle
Jerry Dawson
Bert Freeman
Bob Kelly
Jack Yates
Jimmy Adamson
John Connelly
Jimmy McIlroy
Brian Miller
Ray Pointer
Harry Potts
Frank Casper
Ralph Coates
Martin Dobson
Willie Irvine
Leighton James
Peter Noble
Ian Britton
David Eyres
Billy Hamilton
Gary Parkinson
Andy Payton
Trevor Steven
Graham Alexander
Robbie Blake
Michael Duff
Wade Elliott
Glen Little
Jay Rodriguez
Kieran Trippier

Re: Player pictures around Turf Moor
Is this going to be similar to the wall of players already up leading to the Turf or is this a replacement?

No Tommy Cummings. After he not only won the league but also helped hugely in resurrecting the club, after the Orient match.

Re: Player pictures around Turf Moor
The list was published last August - they were the ones who the supporters voted for. That was the easy bit, it's been a lot more difficult progressing that but hopefully the plan will get the go ahead from the club next week.
Re: Player pictures around Turf Moor
This should look really nice, even though Gnohere's been inexplicably left off the list. The exterior (and interior!) needs a bit of a sprucing up.

Great stuff. Is the Jimmy mc picture on the entrance to 'his' stand part of this?
We need to do more to attract people to the turf on and off match day.

Why is Jean Louis Valois not on the list?

Agree that the exterior generally needs a good clean. The Lettering on the BL in particular is also looking very shabby. Not sure if that is going to be addressed Tony ?

Re: Player pictures around Turf Moor
Given that this was decided last August, I think consideration should now be given to adding Tom Heaton to the list. He is now a Championship winning captain and our first full English International for 40 years. He has now eclipsed Trippier in my view - and I've nothing against Trippier.

If we're adding keepers, you wouldn't seriously have Alan Stevenson up there ahead of Colin McDonald, or indeed Adam Blacklaw?

Far too many players on that list that most fans would have never heard of never mind seen play. I hadn't even heard of some of them.

Out of interest, of all those legendary players, which have you seriously not heard of?

Players from each era, voted for by the fans. I've never seen McIlroy play but it doesn't mean I don't think he should be up there and I'm sure the same applies to those from earlier in our history.

"Excuse my ignorance, Bob Kelly, Jack Yates."
It's not difficult to do a little reading / research, but Bob Kelly, (a regular England international) was the most expensive English footballer of all time, at the time Burnley sold him to Sunderland. [So he was the Gareth Bale of his time - except for Bale being Welsh!!!!!!).
Without "googling" him, I'm less secure about Yates, but I know he scored a hat-trick for England and became the landlord at the Brickmaker's Arms.
Maybe you haven't heard of them all, but is 2 "far too many"?

Re: Player pictures around Turf Moor
Yates was our first ever international.
Voting was done last August, there were thousands of Clarets who voted. We all have favourites who are not on the list, and mine is Brian O'Neil, but the vote was done fairly and the names above are the ones who will be placed outside the ground.

It's good news, but to echo the sentiments of Wilks, I hope that the club are going to do something artistic rather than the stuff they put up around 7 years ago which just looks tacky.

An image of George Oghani doing his ironing ?
Photos of Peter Leebrook beating up Officers of the Law ?
A panorama of Ray Deakin with the ball going out of play ?
A lock of Tony Hancock's hair in a frame in the Gents ?
I think we're missing a trick or two here.

Re: Player pictures around Turf Moor
The firs t time I saw Joe Gallagher was when the players arrived for the game against St. Mirren in the Isle of Man. He was limping quite badly so I assumed he'd picked up a knock in training and wouldn't be playing. I didn't know that he walked like that all the time.Sausage wrote:Joe Gallagher should be honoured with a statue with his left leg hewn from finest mahogany.

It's a couple of the ones that you have heard of which shouldn't really be there.
It's been a vote though so no complaints.

Re: Player pictures around Turf Moor
We didn't want to make the mistake the club have made in the past such as when they launched the Wall of Legends there was no one there pre-1960. It was always intended to reflect the history and that's what it has achieved.
I do find it surprising that people haven't heard of some of those selected given their contributions to our club.

If he completes Agent Kean's mission then I think a minor tribute to them both in the men's lavatories would be in order.
