Gym
Gym
Having gone down gyms most of my life i find i'm not missing it as much as i thought, age a factor maybe but my question is how are they going to open them before a vaccine becomes available as most gyms now are very busy and as one person uses equipment there is usually someone waiting to go on it, not sure m/cs, dumbells and the weights in general can be kept clean

Re: Gym
I'd put them in the same group as pubs and restaurants. As in, they aren't essential. People can drink at home, eat at home and go for walks, rides for exercise, or exercise at home. I can't see them opening anytime soon.

Re: Gym
I suspect that life as we know it will not be the same until a vaccine is developed and available to everyone. No way can I see pubs, restaurants, gyms , sporting events and such like reopening until then.

Re: Gym
There might be a chance that personal fitness centres could open with restrictions in 2-3 months, but not ‘normal’ gyms. Personal fitness centres can clean down every piece of equipment after use with a PT, and social distancing/entrance/exit can be managed. You can’t do that with a normal gym with open entry, loads of users and limited staff numbers.

Re: Gym
I guess the could open with pre-booked timeslots, limited capacity and alternate items of equipment out of use; possibly without use of the changing rooms to maintain social distancing. Keeping the equipment hygenic would be the biggest issue.
As said, they aren't essential so there's an argument that they shouldn't reopen to soon but it is another industry that would be in massive difficulties if they don't.

Re: Gym
My Gym had a 2m gap between all equipment and we had to clean everything down afterwards. Certain items like the ropes for working you triceps had been removed as its difficult to clean rope like a metal bar.
It still felt wrong but I enjoy going to the gym every day for my own mental health as well as my physical health. I miss it badly

Re: Gym
Prior to lockdown I went to the gym religiously 3-4 times a week and have done for about 3 years, pretty much exclusively doing weight training. I tried doing body weight stuff at home (push ups, pull ups etc) but to get any effect I had to do hundreds of them and it got tedious after a couple of weeks. I’ve stopped now and decided to just go for a 20-30 minute jog every day instead until the gym reopens. It’s frustrating as all my progress at the gym is slowly being eroded. It’s not the end of the world but definitely the worst thing about this for me in terms of lifestyle changes.

If you can't get to the gym have a bike ride to Malham instead.

Do press-ups and sit-ups at home, then go for a run.

Re: Gym
PURE gym, I’d imagine it will be the same across the board. The treadmills were only plugged in every other treadmill, same with the rows of other cardio equipment. The staff basically walked around cleaning things down all day. I was impressed but did wonder how long they’d be able to continue doing it, think we got a week.Clarets4me wrote: ↑Thu Apr 23, 2020 11:48 pmSounds a good place that cared about it's people, rather than just profit .... can I ask which Gym ?

Re: Gym
Free weights /dumbbells etc are pretty cheap as a gym substitute tbh . It’s not like cycling /running machines are missed either .Though I do miss being surrounded by nubile tight buttocked women

Re: Gym
Other than the cold damp winter months, I find gyms or a waste of money if cardio is the only thing you do. Your health would benefit far more by walking up and down the Pennines.

Re: Gym
Agree in the summer but my gym is 24 hours which means I can get in at 5am on a Monday in the winter, mentally it sets me up for the week. If I can drag my arse out of bed and go to the gym for a really solid work out on a Monday, I feel prepared for anything!Top Claret wrote: ↑Fri Apr 24, 2020 1:18 pmOther than the cold damp winter months, I find gyms or a waste of money if cardio is the only thing you do. Think you’ll have some lie in’s for a while though. I also miss it badly (more than I thought I would).

Re: Gym
Weight training was my main hobby for most of my 20’s. Just couldn’t keep out of the gym. I found running later on, mainly through jogging on my rest days to keep lean. Got injured 18 months ago and was unable to run for 12 months, so I got back in the gym - 100% assure you that you’ll rebuild strength in no time, give it two months hard training.SammyBoy wrote: ↑Thu Apr 23, 2020 11:20 pmPrior to lockdown I went to the gym religiously 3-4 times a week and have done for about 3 years, pretty much exclusively doing weight training. 6 months back running and I’m nowhere near my previous fitness. Like miles off.

Re: Gym
That's reassuring, I had heard that you regain lost strength way quicker than it initially takes to build it, but wasn't sure if that was just broscience or not. My training is basically low reps, heavy weight on the main compound lifts so when the gym reopens I think I'll assume my one rep max has reduced by 25% and rebuild from there.NewClaret wrote: ↑Fri Apr 24, 2020 10:57 pmWeight training was my main hobby for most of my 20’s. I know what you mean with the running as well, a couple of summers ago I got my 5km time down from 29 mins to 24 mins over about 4 months. I reckon I could've shaved more time off it but unfortunately got ill and didn't run for 3-4 weeks, when I got back to it I'd basically regressed right back to where I started. Ended up jacking it in after that, it was too demoralising.

Re: Gym
One thing i seriously lack is spare time to get to a gym, but I manage to create space of a 30 min workout 5 mornings a week at home. I can't run far though because of my knees so have to settle for walking.
I've managed to keep up with the workout so far, but i've also introduced 2 lengthy football sessions with my youngest (including dribbling one on one) which we've made into a bit of a workout, and more than doubled my usual walk. This lockdown has done me a big favour physically.

Re: Gym
Has everyone finally got back in the gym? I guess I shouldn't be surprised but it's remarkable how weak 4 months of doing absolutely nothing makes you, the first few sessions back have killed me the day after. That being said I can feeling myself progressing by the session, as NewClaret said it's easily regained.

Re: Gym
I've been working out at home. It's amazing what you can do with a couple of dumbbells. Mind you, I only workout to keep fit and toned up.
