Robbie Blake - Undr the cosh

Post by bodge » Thu Apr 23, 2020 9:34 pm

Robbie was on this week for 20 mins or so, the episode is on you tube called "undr the cosh and friends".

There is a classic Stan tale, Robbie's bit starts at around 50 mins in.

I found it difficult to understand what was being said in parts, having said that I'm a little deaf. What I did hear I found rather boring, especially when Blake said he was a Boro fan. :) Yes the Stan bit was a laugh, how times have changed, imagine Blake under the stewardship of Dyche, thinking about it though he probably wouldn't get a game. He'll "always be a claret" though.

Part 1 of their podcast with Robbie is now on YouTube. Robbie is one of my all time favourite Clarets but i think he comes across as a bit of a knob on this. Still looking forward to part 2 though.

Agreed.

Also, think his memory was a bit off for various games. I certainly don't remember coming from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Grimsby which he was talking about.

Might give this a swerve then. I turned off the Glen Little when hearing him laughing about being caught speeding twice in one night.

I wouldn’t recommend this then as he quite boastful of being caught drink driving the night before a game for Bradford.

Apart from this which was in poor taste (observe Brown’s reaction) it’s still a good listen but nowhere near as good as Little’s. Part of that is due to the virtual environment but as alluded to above I think there’s quite a bit of incorrect information.

An interesting bit of info was that Bradford turned down a cash up front bid of £4m from Roverrrrrs, he was then sold to us for £1.2m a year or so later.

it's weird how Bradford turned that figure down and wasn't it whilst he was on loan at Forest at the time or did I make that up?

Think he went to Forest on loan a season later and they couldn’t afford to keep him.

Be interesting to see what he says about Cotterill, Coyle and Laws in the second part.

i thought it was all pretty funny and plenty of good stories in there. I love the fact they are all getting a little ****** and drinking as the episode goes on; funny, light entertainment. I knew Stan was a bit odd but it's really coming out how much of a fruitcake he really was. Look forward to part 2

Half way through. Absolutely slaughters Kevin Blackwell who was his manger at Leeds but then he gets to Brian Laws who he says made Kevin Blackwell look like Trapatoni!

Not one footballer seems to have a good word to say about Kevin Blackwell.

Interesting comments on his move to Bolton. Says Brendan Flood offered him a new contract but he told Flood that he couldn’t stay while Laws was manager. Went to Bolton for not much more money, didn’t really want to leave the club as it felt like home.

Laws was telling the board that Blake was injured when he wasn’t because he didn’t want to play him, not his type of player. Revealed he also left at half time in that infamous Man City home game where Kev McDonald ended up at the pub but he slipped out and went home and Laws never noticed.

The red wine looked like it was kicking in towards the end, what with his emotional ranting.

I was talking about further along in the interview than that.

Anyway, I don't think he covered himself in glory the way he spoke about Laws and Blackwell.

I've listened to quite a few of these podcasts from different ex-players and all of them have the same very poor opinion of Blackwell if they had come across him or played under him.

In respect of Laws, Blake pretty much said he was out his depth, which lets face it, wasn't untrue was it?

Thought he came across an honest chap that has genuine love for Burnley. Glad he overcame his gambling addiction and is back enjoying life.

What I liked about the interview is how he was complimentary about lots of others players.

But he certainly was never short of self confidence and probably was even more full of it when he was younger. Probably a difficult player to manage.

Interesting what he said about Mark Davies though, never would have guessed he's the best player he played with, also shows how unlucky you can get in your career. If he moved to Chelsea he'd probably be set for life.

Wasn't the best, some of the stuff he said came across quite harsh.

But, at least it was honest.

I loved Robbie Blake but I can imagine he's the type that can become a bad egg in the camp. This interview confirms that for me, whilst I did enjoy it.

I've had bosses I've disliked but I would never slag them off to that extent once I left the job, I just find it unprofessional and it generally says more about you than them.

I'm not sure how you can surmise that. I'm sure there were several team mates that liked a drink and a gamble and had opinions, then you get the dedicated professional on and off the pitch, Caldwell and Alexander being prime examples.
I think he may have been right though about looking after himself better, perhaps then he could have gone on to better things. I'm sure the death of his father when Robbie was only 21 didn't help, losing that father figure can send you off the rails somewhat, I lost mine at 16 and it was very hard to take at the time so i understand what he means. At least he sounded honest with his own opinions and I'll always be grateful to him for the time he was with us.

Clarke Carlisle said similar about Laws, but he was a bit less harsh in the way he went about it.

Can you imagine what he must have thought of himself back then if he comes across cocky now? Would have been a nightmare to manage when things went wrong. Probably needed a manager like Stan to keep him at bay.

I'm glad he's put the worse behind him now but I think he could be a little more humble talking about his past. Yes losing your Dad so young is awful as is being addicted to gambling but he talks about it like it was just normal and almost like it was no fault of his own. I don't think it's good to make any excuses for something you knowingly put yourself into, especially when he was in a position unlike many to seek professional help.

I don’t think he was making excuses, just saying he thinks his dad would have put him back on the straight and narrow. He shows regret for how he was wishing he’d done things differently.

I think theres a big difference between having a boss you dislike and having one, in the case of Blackwell, who seemingly tried to make your life as difficult as possible. I don't think Blake spoke out of turn at all, why sugar coat it?

Any regret he did show, which to me seemed pretty minimal was only based on him going further in his career and not related those who worked with him or for the clubs he 'loved'. He went as far as saying it was his fault he was crap when he moved late career to Doncaster but also seemed quick to mention that the lads 'like you guys' wouldn't mind.

Gotta remember the kind of money he was earning from these contracts... Even when he was sidelined by Laws he would be getting paid and it's easy to say now he was sidelined by him through injury, what was probably closer to the truth is he wasn't fit enough by that point to play.

A big favourite of mine, but I wouldn't say he comes off particularly well in either part. Wasn't as good a watch/listen as the Glen Little ones, though to be fair, that's probably expected given the circumstances at the moment.

Plus, I think he either misremembers a lot, or the wine was kicking in for a lot of it. The Man City game he claims to have set up our goal, when he'd actually already been substituted. He seemed to think the Watford QF in 2003 was a replay after drawing at the Turf, and I certainly don't recall an FA cup tie at Walsall whilst Blake was at the club which he was talking about at one point.

Does make you wonder just how much else he was getting wrong in his stories.

these things are always subjective. as fans we hear things, then years down the line we get stuff like this. maybe some things are best kept in house.
just makes me squirm a bit hearing vitriolic comments about fellow pro's when they cant defend themselves.

He must have scored more great goals for us than any other player I can remember. Here's the interview.
