I think Cardiff did the season they went to the Prem and promptly changed their club badge or colours to red
Re: Has any other club won the League or Promotion on the Turf?
1983-84 there were fans celebrating promotion at our last game. We played Hull City who needed to win by 3 goals to pip Sheffield United. From memory, they were 2-0 up at half time but Burnley defended as if their lives depended on it and it finished 2-0. So Hull fans weren't celebrating, but a fair number had travelled from Sheffield - and they were!
(36 years ago, so please excuse any faulty memories. The dates are right, though. Sheffield United's season had already finished.)

I think Bristol City might have got promoted or won the league on the Friday night before playing us on the Saturday under Waddle.
John Ward was their manager.

Was that not Leicester? My memory of it isn't great but I think Leicester secured promotion on the Turf the season we finished behind them, with Wood scoring a belter for them? Could be wrong.

Definitely Cardiff. Leicester were quite a way clear at that point but it was still March when we lost 2-0.

Just checked. I'm wrong.

Cardiff was the early kick off. Think we drew 1-1 with Edgar equalising. They needed a point to win the league.
Edit - In fact come to think of it both games were early kick offs.

I remember now. Cardiff was in Dyche's first half season. Wood did score for Leicester the next season, but like you say it was in March. Those were the days when I'd get $hitfaced at the footy, so it's all a bit of a blur to me!

What about Reading? They came to us late on in the season the year they got 100+ points.

Edgar scored at the death and think that mathematically guaranteed our survival too, whilst confirming Cardiffs promotion

We’ve been lucky the last two promotions have been guaranteed at home. Strange how often we have been away:
60. Man.City
73. PNE
82. Southend
92. York
94. Wembley

Cardiff have clinched promotions twice at the Turf, in 1988 and 2013.

Remember that day in 88. Their fans made quite a noise. Wild bunch, some of em climbing up onto the stanchions of the roof of the Longside.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat Apr 25, 2020 3:59 pmCardiff have clinched promotions twice at the Turf, in 1988 and 2013.

The winning goal was yards offside but the Burnley fans had poured onto the touchline and the linesman was behind them and couldn't see. Goal stood and game immediately abandoned.welsbyswife wrote: ↑Sat Apr 25, 2020 4:11 pmRemember that day in 88. Their fans made quite a noise. Wasn’t the dead rubber match against Wrexham, in 92, something similar?
Ended after a spectator legged up a Wrexham player.

73,92 & 16 we were already up. In 73 we beat Sunderland at home 2-0 to confirm promotion with 4 games leftTricky Trevor wrote: ↑Sat Apr 25, 2020 3:47 pmWe’ve been lucky the last two promotions have been guaranteed at home. Strange how often we have been away:

I think Cardiff were already up before they played us in 2013 as well
Re: Has any other club won the League or Promotion on the Turf?
I don't think any club have clinched promotion at the turf.
So I declare this thread null & void

Spot on dsr....I was there too. It was a bizarre experience with Hull fans on the Cricket Field end, Sheffield fans on the Bee Hole and us on the Long Side.dsr wrote: ↑Sat Apr 25, 2020 12:29 pm1983-84 there were fans celebrating promotion at our last game. We were awful that season in my memory.
Re: Has any other club won the League or Promotion on the Turf?
We weren’t up in ‘92. A draw at Carlisle in the previous game had all but confirmed it but we still needed a point at York to take us up mathematically. The win confirmed our promotion and made us champions.
Re: Has any other club won the League or Promotion on the Turf?
Barring a thirteen goal swing over our last 3 games we were effectively up......in my mind we were up...but you're right,we did need an extra point to be absolutely certain.

Game played because Hull didn't turn up in January due to icy conditions over M62.

Wasn't the '82 championship another one where it was virtually guaranteed at Southend but not mathematically confirmed until Chesterfield at home?Tricky Trevor wrote: ↑Sat Apr 25, 2020 3:47 pmWe’ve been lucky the last two promotions have been guaranteed at home. Strange how often we have been away:

Or in fact, now I think about, didn't the point against Chesterfield all but guarantee the championship but still had to wait to see if Carlisle would take it with a 7 goal win the following night?

You’ve got me, D-D. I just remember the players up in the stand at Southend, celebrating, and it was another away celebration.djemba-djemba wrote: ↑Sun Apr 26, 2020 7:03 amWasn't the '82 championship another one where it was virtually guaranteed at Southend but not mathematically confirmed until Chesterfield at home?

Re: Has any other club won the League or Promotion on the Turf?
1982: We got promotion at Southend with the 4-1 win and the title with the 1-1 draw at TM against Chesterfield. Kevin Young struck the equaliser. Under normal circumstances the match wouldn't have been played as the pitch was under water in some areas. Rumour had it Burnley had booked the players' holiday in Spain or somewhere.djemba-djemba wrote: ↑Sun Apr 26, 2020 7:03 amWasn't the '82 championship another one where it was virtually guaranteed at Southend but not mathematically confirmed until Chesterfield at home?

Come the day of the Chesterfield game we were up,due to the fact Fulham hosted Lincoln so only one of them could overtake us if we had lost.djemba-djemba wrote: ↑Sun Apr 26, 2020 7:03 amWasn't the '82 championship another one where it was virtually guaranteed at Southend but not mathematically confirmed until Chesterfield at home?

Just like Middlesbrough v Brighton that season.
Re: Has any other club won the League or Promotion on the Turf?
You're right,Carlisle could only muster a 1-0 win at Chester the following night.djemba-djemba wrote: ↑Sun Apr 26, 2020 7:03 amOr in fact, now I think about, didn't the point against Chesterfield all but guarantee the championship but still had to wait to see if Carlisle would take it with a 7 goal win the following night?

Re: Has any other club won the League or Promotion on the Turf?
That's spot on - three scenarios at York that night, lose and we had to get a point from the last two games, draw and we were up, win and we were up as champions. Apparently we went in our thousands and came back as champions.

Re: Has any other club won the League or Promotion on the Turf?
We won at Southend to clinch promotion on the Friday night but Carlisle still had two games left and were just two points behind us (first ever season with three points for a win). They lost the following day so were still two behind us and with a worse goal difference. Had we then lost to Chesterfield we wouldn't have won the title but the draw left Carlisle needing to win by seven, as you say. I think they won 1-0 so we won the league on goal difference (six better than there goal difference). Not bad given we had just 4 points from the first 8 games and only 16 from the first 16.djemba-djemba wrote: ↑Sun Apr 26, 2020 7:03 amWasn't the '82 championship another one where it was virtually guaranteed at Southend but not mathematically confirmed until Chesterfield at home?

Cardiff fans seriously misbehaved in 88, climbing on cars and causing damage on Manchester road etc. Amazed it didn't kick off on the pitch tbh

You do surprise me!
