Very much the case. Although he never reached the first team at Forest Dyche speaks of Clough as Clough did of Brown.

Another interesting article on our past Managers.
The Club and supporters ( especially the older ones like myself ) have much to thank Alan Brown for.
The development at Gawthorpe and the signing of wonderful players like Robson ,Connelly ,Miller,Blacklaw and Angus is a fantastic legacy.

Pointer’s debut wasn’t under Brown’s management

A very interesting character, Alan Brown, and Burnley just one part of his career. What this also shows is how lucky a manager Harry Potts was. Not to say that he wasn't a good one, but he was a lucky one as well.

Potts was only lucky in that he took over a good squad. Without his astute management we wouldn't have won the league. He also did what most div 1 winning managers haven't. He dragged a club away from almost certain relegation at Christmas to mid-table safety. That was in the second division. What an epic second half of the season that was with the crowd spilling on to the pitch after the last home match chanting HARRY POTTS, HARRY POTTS! My skin is tingling at the memory.

I'd agree with that - often does need a change of manager to actually go and achieve. In more recent years, Mullin won promotion with Casper's squad and Coyle's promotion was made up of players he inherited from Cotterill. Again, the change of manager probably needed.

Brown was before my time but he introduced a lot of tactical play that Jimmy Mac once told me switched off a lot of players. Mac himself didn't like it because suddenly the likes of Peter McKay, a poacher, was no longer in the box waiting for the ball. But clearly an outstanding coach who ruled, to an extent, by fear with his discipline. Potts couldn't have been more different, very much a people person who virtually everyone got on with really well.

I wonder how Alan Brown and Bob Lord got on with each other? Seems like both were used to getting their own way! My dad really rated Brown as a manager although I don't really remember him.

Maybe it's Brown who was unlucky. Took on difficult jobs at Sunderland and Sheff Wed, but promotion with Sunderland, beaten in the FA Cup Final in 1966, and sacked not long before Sunderland won the cup in 1973.

I think Brown possibly left because of Lord in the end

I think we have lost 5 post war managers to other clubs. Only Frank Hill and Eddie Howe have not been relegated with the club they took over.Cliff Britton took Everton into Division 2
Alan Brown took Sunderland out of Division 1.
Owen Coyle took Bolton out of the Premier League but also was heading for second third and fourth relegations with Wigan, Rovers and Ross County.
At least Britton and Brown took their clubs back up again.
