On this day - Preston and York
Two very special days for Burnley fans:
1973 - Preston
Already won promotion back to the First Division but needed the point to ensure we took the title. Colin Waldron scored the equaliser that ensured we went back up as champions. A fantastic end to a fantastic season.
1992 - York
Finally, seven long years were over. The win at York confirmed both promotion and the last ever fourth division title.
Two brilliant occasions - Preston the best for me, the first time I ever saw us win anything. Really special.

Preston for me too. It marked a relatively quick return to what I was used to and that little.run-in after confirmation v Sunderland was great fun.
York vindicated me taking my children to some.'.odd' places over a few years in the oft diminishing hope that something might happen for us. Of course, I was pleased but more pleased for them to be honest.

Re: On this day - Preston and York
That night against Sunlan remains one of my favourite nights watching Burnley. It had been such a shock two years earlier to be relegated but to get back so soon. We went in the Park View after the game, I had a major row with Dennis Lowe, then a national newspaper reporter, having been urged and cajoled by Keith McNee to have a go at him. The then landlady Ella served us all breakfast at around 9 a.m. I think. Incredible night.durhamclaret wrote: ↑Tue Apr 28, 2020 10:51 amI'm proud to say I attended both games, yes both very special and also the promotion clincer v Sunlan at the Turf was fantastic.

Two great memories... Colin's cracker at Deepdale and
SJF hanging on the fence at York.
I also went to both games, two special days

I remember Burnley fans being all over Deepdale that day. Amazing following.

We found ourselves in the enclosure where the team's came out. We should be on that.iconic picture of the team walking on to the pitch but I've never been able to find us.

That game at Preston was one of the worst I've seen, talk about a fix. Didn't we let them score first?
Fantastic day out though.

They watered the wings and narrowed the pitch at Deepdale to try to negate Taffy's influence. Was sat with my dad just in front of the press box. Believe the estimates for the following that day at Preston were at least 14,000+
Was living in York for the 92 champions game. Fantastic night, I was right behind the goal. (Should always remember though the terrible reason for the original game being postponed, with the death of apprentice Ben Lee who fell through the Longside roof when retrieving a ball.)

DC, Waldron must be one hell of a player if that was football theatre and nothing else...
Re: On this day - Preston and York
On the same subject, Ben Mee's slip in the home game against Liverpool and the penalty he gave away against I can't remember at the Turf this season and Hart's despairing non-dive when we lost 3-1 at Fulham comes to mind AND the comical Forest defending when we scored 3 before half-time.

Re: On this day - Preston and York
Like others, I went to both games and find it impossible to put one above the other.
Deepdale was awesome and even when we were behind there didn't seem to be any worries about winning the league. The subsequent carve-up - what seemed like a few minutes spent playing by a corner flag, for example - made for a wonderful trip. Me and my mate Roy Thistlethwaite - honestly ! - were even on a pic that appeared in "The Mirror".
York was different again, glorious but with a more frenetic and almost tribal atmosphere. I was in touching distance of Francis as he leapt up onto the fencing. Two great events in BFC history.

Brilliant day at Preston. On the pitch at the end singing with the players.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Tue Apr 28, 2020 10:15 amTwo very special days for Burnley fans:

Re: On this day - Preston and York
Like Tony I’d followed the clarets from being a young boy but never actually saw them win anything (except fa youth cup!)so 73 was special. Everyone has a year they particularly remember and 73 was mine. It was A level year, Burnley were superb and I followed them home and away. Rishton won the worseley cup against Enfield! I got a job in civil service and left home and went to London at 18.the summer was fabulous and for 50 p I could get three pints of mild and a bag of crisps!!!
York was different. I’d been living in Wetherby nearby for a few years. My best mate Jason from Rishton was up the road in Stockton.my son Paul(Leeds Paul and now unfortunately dead)was with me as a 11 year old behind that goal and we were so happy that night driving back to Wetherby pipping our horn through all the villages. Great memories of two great matches for Burnley fans.

Re: On this day - Preston and York
I caught the 9.50am train to Preston and it was packed. Too young to go in the pubs so I presume I just wandered around soaking up the atmosphere. It was like a home game anyway, with just about every Burnley fan I knew there.

Re: On this day - Preston and York
Can't personally choose between Preston or York as to which is the most memorable.
Both have such a lot going for them.
Like a few above, was my first time seeing us actually win anything.
At York, getting out of the basement division was bloody marvellous after what we'd endured for such a long time.
On both occasions though our support really was amazing.

Re: On this day - Preston and York
We were on a morning train. One of my mates opened a bottle of champagne and some poor bloke going to work in Accrington got drenched in it. Was only cheap stuff though.Stan Tastic wrote: ↑Wed Apr 29, 2020 11:33 amI caught the 9.50am train to Preston and it was packed. I wasn’t too young for the pubs but couldn’t tell you which ones we went in although the final pub of the day was when we were finally chucked out of the Boot in Burnley.

Re: On this day - Preston and York
For the Preston match I went over with about 15 mates in three cars, parking up not far from the ground at about 11,30. We went in a working men's club not far from the ground and the bar steward told us we may have to leave later when it filled up with Preston fans. Within another half an hour the place was full with about 150/200 Burnley fans, needless to say we didn't have to leave. After the game we went into Great Harwood for a few beers, then back to the Burnley centre pubs, before ending up in the Circulation Club. The Circ was absolute pandemonium: I remember two topless Burnley girls on the shoulders of two guys fighting with cushions, it was that kind of night, happy days!!!

Your favourite season is a bit like your favourite music, holiday or pub. It'll always be the one that stands out from whenever you were 13-21 because everything is better then.
For me it's '92. Sometimes I think it's 08/09 or 13/14 but then I see Francis bundling the ball in at York and it all comes back.

Re: On this day - Preston and York
The biggest away following Burnley have taken in a league game in the modern age. Someone above cites 14,000 plus. Very much plus, I'd say. My favourite ever match.

Re: On this day - Preston and York
I suppose our following that day depends on how truthful the crowd figure was. Preston were averaging 9,632 prior to that final match, but included large crowds against Blackpool (18,822), Aston Villa (17,371) and Sheffield Wednesday (15,500).
Their fee matches before that game we’re seeing 6,200 - 7,800 (v mid-table Oxford who don’t have huge followings), so assume at least 7,500 home fans with it being final game and they needed to stay up?
The crowd was 21,550, so 14,000 or so would seem about right?

Re: On this day - Preston and York
The area of the terracing next to the old Pavilion Stand was Preston, the rest of the ground was simply a sea of claret and blue. No advance tickets in those days either.Claretforever wrote: ↑Wed Apr 29, 2020 5:40 pmI suppose our following that day depends on how truthful the crowd figure was.
