Re: Item of interest on eBay
Certainly looks potentially authentic.
Tom Nicol was born in Linlithgow in 1870, which is not that far from Glasgow. He played 149 games for Burnley, including the 1891/92 season, and scored a total of 44 goals.

If that engraving has a hundred and thirty years worth of wear on it then I'm the I'm the son of Batman and the Queen of Sheeba

Got to be a "great"con artist to come up with something as non interesting as an old lighter with a Burnley connection.priced at under £50...Burnley1989 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 28, 2020 8:30 pmI’d probably gamble £100 for it on the off chance it’s legit

Re: Item of interest on eBay
The font style on the engraving looks very modern, as does the actual engraving as Fenwick (Son of Batman & Queen of Sheeba!!) pointed out. The item is allegedly around 130 years old, if real, it has major sporting significance (at least for Clarets fans ) - but the best description he offers is that's it is still working but has no petrol in it!!! No provenance at all - where it was obtained from etc. If it is too good to be true as they say...…….!

Where petrol cigarette lighters in use at that time? Petrol cars were being thought of but I'm not sure if petrol usage in other things were quite as frequent.

Lighter invented in 1823 apparently...
But as Flints (Ferrocerium) weren't invented until early1900's it makes this lighter unlikely to be date correct.
