I like him for his Golden Globes performances alone. Think he's great at stand up & Afterlife was pretty good.

I guess a topic like this will be subjective depending on people's tastes,and many of the names mentioned for better or worse have earned millions at the box office,and their names in the credits generally lead to higher grossing films,ultimately that what the money men care about.

If this was pop singers Gary Glitter would be a 1/10. How on esrth did he manage to market such cr@p and have so many hits. Can hardly speak and certainly cant sing.

I don't think his limitations as a singer were his biggest fault personally.

I know but some on here really struggle with some of the simplest of modern gender terms like grouping male and female never mind upsetting the neanderthals with talk of trans or gender neutral.

As its a fun thread Im just making it easy to follow for those stuck in the 70's but from your post looks like we cant even do that.

Mate its all about opinions. Pretty Woman might be one of you favourite films and whilst I thought it was ok in my opinion Julie Andrews rank bad acting let it down.

You seem to have a problem with your Caps Lock function which makes your post hard to follow but it sounds like we agree in principle about Julie Andrews being a terrible actor but are splitting hairs on some of the finer details around her performance in Pretty Woman

Ricky Gervais is brilliant.
His stand up shows are fantastic.
The Office is one of my favourite ever shows.
Extras was excellent
After Life is also brilliant.

He’s even appeared in Curb Your Enthusiasm which is one of the best programmes in history. The fact that Larry David one of the most successful comedy actors / writers in the history of television invited him to appear kind of suggests he’s got a few more fans than on this messageboard !!

Love Ricky Gervais as a funnyman. I think a lot of people dislike him because of the success of The Office. I think this is because original fans ‘get’ The Office but people who came later to see what the fuss was about, missed the point. In it the character Gervais plays isn’t meant to be funny. It is the writing that is meant to be funny. Gervais is meant to be a prick in it. The Office is real life documentary with Gervais trying to get more personal airtime and the lengths he will go to, to achieve his aim. If anyone doesn’t get that premise they won’t enjoy it. It will just look like Gervais is over acting. The narrators tone can be difficult to like for some perhaps. Think I first saw Gervais in The Day Today. Loved his rants in that as well. If he writes his own material then I like him even more. Guess he sometimes has writers writing for him. I think Iannucci writes some of his material, maybe. Certainly think they bounce off each other.

The first time he was on TV was on the 11 o’clock show. He had his own slot every week and was a bit Frankie Boyle in terms of the level of swearing and the things he was talking about.
Don’t think he was ever on The Day Today - which was btw a brilliant programme. That was Chris Morris and Steve Coogan amongst others. Armando Iannucci would have been involved in that but again don’t think he has ever been anything to do with Gervais (I might be wrong)

You're right. Gervais co-writes his own material along with Stephen Merchant... other than the odd film he's been in.

The office is a work of genius in my opinion!

The Office is fantastic. I remember Gervais from the 11 o’ clock show, he was quite a character even then. To be honest I’ve enjoyed everything he’s done including his stand ups. Extras is also great and Derek and Afterlife are both very watchable. I like how he always sticks to the two series + Xmas special to avoid the programme running out of steam.
