Re: Subbuteo
Training pitch looks a bit rough tbh.
It's the only game that I know where the ball is very nearly as big as the players !!!

Brilliant, Dad died a blanket green then marked the pitch with model paint. Far bigger than the pitch in the box but it allowed him to pin it UNDER the table. Made Mum happy.Colburn_Claret wrote: ↑Wed Apr 29, 2020 7:06 pmPlayed it for hours as a kid. Cup competitions, leagues, international friendlies the lot. Happy days.

Not very realistic that crowd set up though, shouldn't they all be at least 2m apart?

My late '60s set lining-up in a Dyche formation on a frozen surface. Used to love playing that game.

Played that game for hours in my youth, still never mastered it though.
That and table football were my passions, and these as well.

I didn't know there was a subbuteo cricket, but apparently there was,and a subbuteo rugby, the makers must have been raking it in.

Re: Subbuteo
Here are the winning Clarets from the 2019 North Staffs Oldsubbuteo Tournament
I think there were 24 of us all using teams who played in Division 2 during the calendar year of 1978 .. mainly attended by players of a certain age ,as you might expect, accompanied by one or two of their sons. These events are a good chance to talk about football back in the day , have a pint and a bit of dinner and flick some bits of inanimate plastic around like we were kids again not too competitive but a bit of an edge sometimes I must admit

I've seen people model players like him .... I would imagine they would be difficult figures to actually use ....the usual routine at our events is you receive your team as you arrive to prevent the win at all costs brigade altering the weight etc etc pretty sad really

I'm of an age where the keepers were on the end of a wire handle, as opposed to the plastic one
I used to be fascinated how the green baize felt stuck to the carpet.
We never played with the big ball, always preferring the smaller one. White for normal
games and orangey/brown for winter games.
Great fun and hours and hours of entertainment.
Happy memories.

Yes ... I've not inherited much of his artistic ability I'm afraid especially as regards the flat players he has a rare talent for painting them ...very difficult in truth
The teams above were done by a friend of mine, he makes a living from it , I could paint those quite well when my eyes were twenty years younger ... but not now ...especially now I'm doing zoom and ms teach all day online my eyes are worsening by the day...

Re: Subbuteo
I used to love playing in the 1960s, basically through my early teens. We had a league for a few years in the area of Burnley I lived. We registered the league officially and it was published at the season end (with others nationally) in the Subbuteo annual round up each year. Played an "international" one year against a team from Manchester Deansgate area.
When I started, the players were 2-d cardboard then became more flexible 2-d thin plastic then came the 3-d figurines. I ended up with a lot of sets in different colours, I used to play in the league with the Hamilton Accies team because I liked the colours.
All the equipment I'd assembled was kept idle in my mother's house from me being c. 16 onwards and then given away to a younger cousin.
When I had a lad, we used to play for a few years, got quite competitive (as it often does between father & son).

On the topic of Subbuteo, I spent most of my Saturday mornings playing Subbuteo cricket against Barry Heagin (London Clarets?) and still have some of the score cards. It was often England versus the West Indies and Barry could bowl just like Wes Hall !! Needless to say Barry won most of the matches.

Re: Subbuteo
Was anyone EVER caught out at Subbuteo cricket ? The chance of the ball rolling into the depression in the base of a fielder always seemed incredibly remote to me !
I was a massive Subbuteo football enthusiast as a young teenager...brilliant game as long as you had an opponent who knew how to play the game properly. VAR would have been useful to sort out the accusations of "dragsies" (as opposed to cleanly flicking the player) whenever I played against my brother. Had the pitch and goals pinned out on a wooden board and played for many hours.Important to ditch the largest size of football, which was bigger than the players, and use one of the smaller balls for maximum skillage. Reading this thread has made me want to play again !

That home strip was my first ever Subbuteo team. Got it with my Subbuteo Club Edition, it would either be my birthday or Christmas ‘78. The set came with the standard red and blue teams but I was also bought the Burnley ‘V strip’ team and a team in blue and white halves who’s name escapes me. Most of my pocket money over the next few years went on Subbuteo teams and accessories, off the top of my head I remember having Argentina, Brazil, Burnley yellow kit, throw in and corner takers, ‘electronic’ scoreboard and for some reason an FA Cup presentation set (including mini Queen), ball boys and a tv tower.ralphdpomeroy wrote: ↑Thu Apr 30, 2020 7:56 amHere are the winning Clarets from the 2019 North Staffs Oldsubbuteo Tournament

I've seen the Yellow change kit on ORIGiNAL heavyweight figures sell for £250 ... mind numbing really as the bases warp and the plastic goes brittle over the years ... the two teams of mine above are Top Spin replicas £15 each new last year.martin_p wrote: ↑Thu Apr 30, 2020 2:25 pmThat home strip was my first ever Subbuteo team. Re: Subbuteo
Used to get my teams from Spavin and Kelly's in Lancaster...
As you can imagine being owned by two former nob end players it was very PNE orientated in there.
Loved it when the goalies with the springs on came out, I've always found a full stretch fingertip save almost as satisfying as a vollied goal...a full stretch fingertip save from a full volley the best thing ever

if you get a piece of lined paper and fold it like a fan, you can make Subbuteo terracing the size of however big your bedroom, with a bit of cardboard support at the back.

Brings back fabulous memories from the early/mid seventies - incidentally when the best balanced models were made. Spent hours playing with my mates in cups and leagues and...….sadly hours perfecting the flick. My speciality was the 'inswinging' corner - almost as good as sex when they went in.

Used to play this for many hours. Once played it all night without going to bed. Had lots of teams, Burnley of course, my favourite was Alloa with hooped shirts.
Re: Subbuteo
It was all the pointless accessories that made it for me, the cameramen, TV tower, police and ambulancemen, ball boys, fencing etc. Used to spend more time setting the thing up than playing it.
They were going to bring out a special Peter Crouch figure doing his robot dance in time for the 2006 World Cup but sadly it never actually happened.

Great memories playing as a kid - late 70s to mid 80s roughly. Might have to drag it out from the loft for old times' sake. Where did you all used to get all of the stuff from? The toy shop in Burnley on Yorkshire Street had a decent collection but used to get most of mine from a shop in Keighley on the road going down to the train station.
