Aware of your own mortality ....
Having heard some terrible news from a close friend over the last few days, and reading of the passing of famous names from my youth over the past month ..... Peter Bonetti, Stirling Moss, Norman Hunter, Honor Blackman etc ... it rather brings into focus the question of your own mortality ..
When I was born in 1963, the life expectancy for a male born in that year was 67.9 years. I'm now 56.5 years old, roughly, which I suspect won't be too far off the average age of posters on here ! Men are notoriously bad at visiting the Doctors, when they may have a problem, so if I may put things into a sporting context ... ( on average )
1) I've got 15 minutes to go in a Premier League game ...
2) In a 1500 m race, I've heard the bell, and I'm a third of the way down the back straight ...
3) In a 5 set Grand Slam Tennis final, I'm 3 games into the final set ...
4) In a Grand National, I've thundered over the Melling Road and begun the long run towards the 2nd last fence ...
5) In the " Open ", I'm putting on the 6th Green, in the final round on a Sunday afternoon ...
So if you have a concern, go and see your GP, get any tests or help you need, and try and beat the odds !!
Keep safe, one and all !!

Another 66 year old here. I think with this virus on the rampage I'm in extra time. Never mind I was there at Chelsea when we won in extra time so I have to be positive.

From a personal point of view it doesn't matter to people planning to get a 4D speaking telegram from the King.
You should be enjoying days, not counting them.

Re: Aware of your own mortality ....
Life expectancy is in your hands, basically. Of course you can die by accident or family DNA but looking after yourself has to be the starting point. Keep your weight sensible, have a drink or two less, don’t eat a fry every day. All these will help your heart do its job. Exercise, whether walking, swimming, cycling or jogging, gives everything a boost including your mental health. I've solved many a problem whilst out jogging or on the bike.
Long life and happiness to you all.

Re: Aware of your own mortality ....
Is this site made up of 60 odd year old blokes? we seem to be in the majority, just think about the moaning that will go on in here as we progress into our 70s
Re: Aware of your own mortality ....
Bosscat don't worry, you're about to be sponsored by G M fitted furniture so its not all bad news.
Re: Aware of your own mortality ....
More like "Odd blokes" of 60+ years old
Like I keep telling the Mrs "if you think I moan now just wait till I'm pushing 70"

The good news is that for all your examples, you are entering the most exciting and meaningful time. All the preparation you have done, until now, has put you where you are, ready for the big moments.
Enjoy.

You are ahead of yourself, your LE has been increasing since your birth although recently it has started to fall. In 2020 the average UK male period LE is to 82.6 years and for projected LE assuming improved health it is to 84.4 years which means the game has at least 28 minutes to go including added time or 29mins and 17 seconds.
Even I have 14 minutes left unless I leave early or lose my mind when i may still be there when the game is over

The last 15 minutes of a football match are often the most exciting!

Wasn't it Lord Palmerston who on his death bed, allegedly turned to his doctor and said something like "Die my dear doctor? That is the last thing I shall do"

It was Palmerston who fathered an illegitimate child when he was 78. The story goes that Disraeli wouldn't let it be leaked to the press because it would increase his popularity!

Not for us
Dyche never makes a bloody substitution until 90 mins
With time on hands watched youtube and the late winner from Barnes to beat Palace 3-2 (he had actually been subbed on with only 5 mins to go)
Remember being in a bar in Spain that afternoon - had a good night celebrating

Re: Aware of your own mortality ....
I was born in October 1955 and I often wonder about life expectancy in relation to everyone else. I had a friend at school who was superb at physics and it really took me aback when I learnt that he had died, as he and I were from the same year group at Edge End and we were both 18 at the time.
In my head of course I'm still 18 and went to Edge Hill teacher training college Ormskirk ,the best years for making friends I've ever had. As far as I know from the group of friends that I made then, we are all still going strong (well going).
So my immediate concerns are: will I be the first the gang to go bald ?( More peaceful problems than the Smiths !!!) I'm already going grey but not reached the silver fox stage ??? I have some painful finger joints and my knee creaks when I sit down so I don't like kneeling down. I'm on my third cat's life as I successfully survived emergency acute appendicitis at the age of 10 and Prostate Cancer (Thanks Barry Kilby) at age 64. Now I wonder will I have a longer life expectancy than my father who died age 71.
In my mind I'd like to live to see my grandsons reach 21, so as they are are 6 and 3 years old, I'd like another few seasons never mind extra time !!!

Re: Aware of your own mortality ....
Me, I'm young, out a lot, enjoy life to the full up to very recently so, not that worried, however I do worry very much for the old person I see in the mirror every morning and wonder about her mortality for sure.
Later in the day she always picks up though but maybe something to do with the full warpaint, however during the last month or so there has been little to no warpaint. I am not in a match and 90 min's, for me the season is about to kick off after the winter break when this lot allows us to resume kick off.

Re: Aware of your own mortality ....
At 44 nearing 45 it occurred to me 15 years previous I was still in my twenties which did seem a Long time ago tbh. Then thought but in 15 years time I'll be 60!!! Hows that Happen? Well thankfully it did but a lot more faster than the previous 15. My lifes now divided into 15year segments.im just inside the last two furlongs.you do the maths.
Re: Aware of your own mortality ....
I'm in my 66th year but mortality is for other people. My Dad was a hard drinking smoker who got cancer and died at 68. I'm nothing like him. My Mother was as fit as a fiddle until she died in her sleep at 95. I think I take after her!!
