Carry On Films
Carry On Films
I suppose they are a bit like Marmite . Personally I think they are great. Harmless fun and innuendo from a bygone era where a bit of cheekiness wasn't considered to be anything but that. Poking fun at British institutions and customs. Carry on Cleo is my favourite.

I personally like Carry on Screaming, which has Fenella Fielding in an extremely alluring roll.

Re: Carry On Films
Carry on Washing Your Hands.
Carry on Social Distancing.
I guess these films are influenced by generational attitudes,i can't see many millennial's getting the humour, but most people the wrong side of 40/50,will find them hilarious,we've got the box set,but we rarely watch them.
I've seen rumours that their going to attempt to remake the originals,or attempt new titles, bad idea as Carry on Columbus showed, the reason the formula worked was the chemistry between the cast, notably Hattie Jacques and Sid James,i don't see any modern actors emulating that,Charles Hawtrey was also an important ingredient,as were many of the original cast, you can't recreate that again it was unique, and all done on a modest budget.

Got quite a lot of these on dvd when they gave them away free in newspapers
Re: Carry On Films
You can't remake these films. It was the cast that made them what they are. Carry on Columbus was horrificly bad. Imagine remaking the Friends series with 6 new actors taking on the lead roles. Nah.

I love the Carry On films. I have the whole lot on DVD, and have had them as my specialist subject in quizzes. I am a total nerd when it comes to these films.

Re: Carry On Films
I think that they hit a peak a peak with Carry on Cleo, Cowboy and Screaming. The two films that followed were equally as good but the Carry On prefix was dropped. Don’t Lose Your Head and Follow That Camel, which had the extra attraction of having Phil Silvers in the cast. They were subsequently renamed with the Carry On prefix reinstated which did, in fact, make them sound a little awkward, i.e. Carry On Don’t Lose Your Head and Carry On Follow That Camel.

Re: Carry On Films
Carry On Don't Lose Your Head is really good. Not so happy with Phil Silvers in Follow That Camel, I believe it was an attempt to capture the US market.dermotdermot wrote: ↑Thu Apr 30, 2020 6:00 pmI think that they hit a peak a peak with Carry on Cleo, Cowboy and Screaming. Re: Carry On Films
Nice in-joke in 'Screaming' in the scene where Harry H Corbet's character had been turned into Mr Jeckyl and was on a horse and carriage with Bernard Bresslaw.
The background music was a subtle extract from the Steptoe and Son theme tune!

Re: Carry On Films
Slightly paraphrasing from 'carry on cowboy' but it went something like...
"I've just seen your men stealing 500 of my cows"
"Bullocks"
No, really, I did!"

Re: Carry On Films
The carry on actors must have had so much fun making these films, in up the Khyber when Jim Dale tells his men to fire at will, Peter Butterworth replies: why fire at poor old Will what has he ever done to you, and in another scene, Peter Butterworth again, says : ive never travelled on a cart pulled by cows before sergeant, bullocks says the sergeant, no i haven't sarg honestly was his reply, gets me everytime.

Re: Carry On Films
The dinner party scene in "Khyber" is about as good as it gets. My favourite is when Butterworth says something like "shocking" obviously referring to the attack, and Sir Sydney replies "They're not really a top class orchestra", or similar. I love that scene.

" Carry on Spying " , had Syd James in the role of " M " , he's assessing his new spies, and looks at Charlie Hawtry ....
" M " - " Good God, what have we got here ? What's your number ? "
CH - " I'm Double 0,0 Sir "
" M " - " Don't be silly, nobody's got that number "
CH - " Oh, I have ! They took one look at me in training and said ' Uh, oh, ooh ' !

Re: Carry On Films
Think was one of the doctor/nurse ones..Hattie Jacques (matron) chasing Kenneth Williams (doc) round the table.
Williams said "I was once a weak man, you know..."
Hattie replied "once a week is enough for any man!"

Dr. Prodd: "Mrs. Tucker, isn't it? Now what can I do for you?"
Mrs. Tucker: "Well, I came to see you three months ago, because I was a little bit worried about my husband being able to have a baby."
Dr. Prodd: "Yes, that's right, he's a bit older than you, isn't he?"
Mrs. Tucker: "Eighty-eight."
Dr. Prodd: "Yes."
Mrs. Tucker: "Well, if you remember, you suggested it might be a good idea to take in a lodger, you know, someone nearer my own age."
Dr. Prodd: [uncomfortably] "Yes, well, purely off the record, of course."
Mrs. Tucker: "Well, it worked! I'm pregnant."
Dr. Prodd: "Oh! What about your husband?"
Mrs. Tucker: "Oh, he's tickled pink."
Dr. Prodd: "And what about the lodger?"
Mrs. Tucker: "Well, that's the trouble. She's pregnant too!"
