I can still see him in the white coat - even walking home in it

Thanks again, Tony, for recognising Grandad's contribution.
Based on the 'Aware of Your Own Mortality' thread, there's still a few on here that might recall him, but the numbers are dwindling...

My dad used to go on and on about him and Ray Bennion - and then I spoke to people like Harry Potts, Brian Miller, Jimmy Mac and Tommy Cummings about them and they simply said we wouldn't have achieved what we did without them. Both a huge influence on our club over many years. Says something when the whole club shut down for his funeral so everybody from the club could attend.

The only time I had a conversation with Jimmy Mac, when we were both waiting to see the doctor, I asked him who had the greatest influence on him as a player and without hesitation he replied "probably Billy Dougall"which at the time surprised me. He added that whilst managers often receive most of the praise( if the club is successful), there are always others, more in the background, that were particularly influential.
I certainly remember his white coat!

It's our duty, those of us around today, to ensure names from the past are remembered for those fans of the future. Next week the managers feature will start with the managers who I remember, but I've enjoyed being able to add to that the names from before who are now in the managers section on this site.

Hopefully I'll be able to do a bit more on former players too if things continue and there's no current football to write about.

It's so important that the key people are remembered.

Used to go with my dad when Billy was the trainer. Every time one of our players was injured my dad would say , don’t worry Billy Dougall will fix it with his magic sponge! And he did !! Seem to remember he would trot on to the injured player carrying what looked like an open rubber bag containing a wet sponge. The injured player would point to his injury and Billy would work his magic. And hey presto we were up and running again.

Another fascinating article although his time as Manager was short he was undoubtedly a major influence on our success in the late fifties.
I also recall the white coat and the man in charge of getting an injured player back on his feet on matchdays.
As an older supporter I remember his valued influence on the club when I started attending matches.
