1987 cup final

Post by Foulthrow » Sat May 02, 2020 7:57 pm

Just watching coverage of this on ITV. Why did some Spurs players not have a sponsor on their shirt? What was going on there?

My favourite Cup Final. Was rooting for Coventry as the underdog even though I don’t mind Spurs. I always remember this final and really enjoyed watching it at the time.

It seems it was a simple error when getting the kit together.
Ossie Ardiles was the first I noticed and assumed he was maybe anti-alcohol so didn't want to promote Holsten.

Not 100% but i think below is what happened or something very similar

New strip and FA had not confirmed if they would allow alcohol as sponsor. Spurs had sets of strips with and sets of strips without sponsor and once FA approved kit men screwed up and packed a mix of different strips

*Brian Kilcline

It was the first ever game of football I had the attention to watch all the way through.

Probably the last one that I really enjoyed and watched all way through.

Watch the build up in the morning, pub for dinner time, 3pm kick off. Those were the days.

One of the classic Wembley finals, always remember Houchen's diving header,i didn't recall Mabbutt netting at both ends,

Coventry and Wimbledon the following year, two major shocks in finals.

I think the last one I enjoyed was the 89 final of Liverpool and Everton. That McCall volley! I must have practiced that goal 500 times against the factory wall near where I lived.

The 91 final I remember because of Gazza with that silly tackle, and Sunderland in 92 for the team bus interviews etc, although the score was inevitable. After that I’m struggling remembering any final from a performance perspective.

90 cup final was a cracker but often forgotten because of the dismal replay. Both semi finals were crackers that year as well

I watched this today. Cracking match but seems a million years ago. Passing back to the keeper ? No cautions for most of the match ?

Wigan-Man city was good for the result and the underdog story. Can't remember how long ago that was.

I’ve seen DAs plausible answer above. Another tale was that it was deliberate, everybody was talking about it on the Monday. They never had more advertising.
Did Houchen have BO? Wins them the final with a wonderful header and no teammates celebrate with him.

Quite a big difference to how the players play the game today.
As well as goalkeepers picking up back passes and referees allowing players to almost maim each other without caution there was less gamesmanship.
Ossie Ardiles went down with cramp on the pitch and actually rolled off the pitch to get treatment rather than try and hold up the game.

My favourite final without a doubt. I taped it on VHS and I still have it because when we knew VHS was going to go I bought a new one it gets very little use but I can still play tapes from the past, family things mainly.

Nick Pickering I spotted
Chris Waddle
And Big Mitchell Thomas who seemed to get a bit of a roasting that day.

Spurs had a really good team but Coventry who also had some good players seemed to play out of their skin that day and the ageing Spurs team couldn’t cope with their pace down the flanks - especially Bennett who had a blinder

Mitchell Thomas was one of those signings that I seriously questioned at the time who proved to be an outstanding signing.

Yep he was great for us. Really seemed to take on the role of one of the senior experienced pros and he was also a really good player for us.
And he was also the one who first mentioned Ian Wright to Stan as being potentially available and Wright must have been influenced by Thomas being here too in deciding to come.

Think the '79 final was the best I can remember. Sunderland wins for Arsenal.
