This is where I came in. My dad was at Maine Road, eventually got home and when news came that the team were coming back to the ground he got me out of bed to watch them come down Brunshaw Road.

What a great night it was. Nobody can ever take that feeling away from those who were there, knowing we were the best team of footballers and champions of the biggest league in England and entering the European cup and flying the flag for England as well.

Re: ARTICLE: Reception shocks returning champions
A very special occasion on a never-to-be-forgotten night.
Must have been around midnight and Dad had manoeuvred us into a perfect position in front of the Town Hall steps. As Jimmy Adamson and the rest of the players emerged onto the balcony the sight of Dad in tears is something that will stay with me for as long as I live.

Like an encore,CT. The more there are, the better the story. Frenchclaret and my brother were at the same school in Blackburn so I imagine there was plenty to talk about the next day.

Nice to read from all
Re: ARTICLE: Reception shocks returning champions
Great read . A proper footballing town celebrating winning the title as opposed to a town who's population

Re: ARTICLE: Reception shocks returning champions
Great set of articles and this comment from Adamson;
“As soon as the final whistle sounded I let my emotions get the better of me for the first time on a football field. I thought, this is it, and threw my arms round someone – either Tommy Cummings or Dusty Miller.”
The contrast between the histrionics you see in the game today is staggering

Notice we didn’t have “ The Lady”, was it in Middlesborough that night?
Re: ARTICLE: Reception shocks returning champions
It seems, throughout it all that Tommy Cummings was a leading light.

I'm not ashamed to admit that, reading that article, made me feel very emotional. It made sixty years seem like no time at all and I felt eleven again! The excitement, the sheer joy and the knowledge that Burnley were champions of England was so amazing.
I feel so lucky to have seen so many matches of that era and reading this fantastic series of articles has enabled me to relive so many memories.
Take a bow CT!

Re: ARTICLE: Reception shocks returning champions
A bit harsh, Tommy played 20+ games ( I think) mainly at the beginning/end of the season, good to have a wise old head on board.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sun May 03, 2020 12:18 pmNot in terms of playing. Only came back into the side for the last few games after Seith was banished. Tommy was the senior player though.

Re: ARTICLE: Reception shocks returning champions
Not harsh, it’s fact. Had Seith & Lord not fallen out, Tommy wouldn’t have been in the team. In so many ways it was brilliant that he was because he’d been an outstanding player for us over many years.
By the time I saw him play he was a very experienced centre half but my dad always used to tell me of the days when he was a very quick full back.
Smashing bloke too.

Re: ARTICLE: Reception shocks returning champions
My dad attended the match and he says that the road from Rawtenstall to Burnley was lined with people waving and cheering as the team bus went passed, amazing scenes.
