Love and Mercy is a superb film, particularly the segments recreating the Beach Boys recording sessions in the Pet Sounds heyday. I thought the casting of John Cusack as the therapy-era Brian Wilson was flawed somehow...and I usually really like Cusack as an actor. I think maybe he was just too slim ! The actor who played the young Brian thoughts superb.

The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover

Synopsis.
When churlish mobster Albert Spica (Michael Gambon) acquires an upscale French restaurant in London, he dines there nightly, effectively scaring off the clientele with his bad manners. His wife, Georgina (Helen Mirren), is especially disgusted by him, and soon begins an affair with another restaurant guest, Michael (Alan Howard). Despite their efforts to keep it a secret, however, Spica finds out about their trysts, and he plans to exact a terrible revenge.

modern-day musical about a busker and an immigrant and their eventful week in Dublin, as they write, rehearse and record songs that tell their love story.

Don't generally watch many films but with the lockdown have found myself watching a bit more telly and one of the films that I and my wife watched which we both thought was excellent and have since recommended to our children was The Death Of Stalin. An uproarious comedy I have since seen it described as and that's as good a description as any.

Not a film, but I’ve just watched the 4 series of MONEY HEIST on Netflix. One of the most enjoyable series I’ve ever watched. Different take on a familiar theme. Must watch.

Do they make it out of the bank at any point? I gave up at the end of season 1

All I will say is that there continues to be twists and turns and more character reveals. Wherever you are along the journey I’m sure you will be glad you’ve stuck with it. For me, if I’d have watched it week by week, I might have lost interest during the first series. However the detail, and the new characters as they are introduced and their impact on the story make it a more compulsive watch as the story develops
I also like the baddies versus baddies concept!

"Life is beautiful" Didn't realise it was 1997 but timeless. Italian with sub-titles. I defy you not to shed a tear.

Shawshank redemption

Knives Out had loads of subtext about class, American exceptionalism, liberal hypocrisy, and the whole campiness of it was a nice subversion, making it a very political film without it ever being overtly political or dry. I though it was a lot of fun. Portrait is an inversion of the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice (not that I knew anything of that before watching) and it's directly referenced in the film. Knowing that now gives a good reason for a re-watch. It's very minimalist, almost 'cinema verite' in its style, where script is kept to a minimum and so much of the drama and meaning is conveyed through framing, performance, and allowing scenes to breathe without cuts. Very quiet, very slow paced, and it draws an utterly ridiculous amount of emotion from such little dialogue. It definitely won't be to everyone's taste, but I'd hope that any caricatures about French art-films that people might scoff at won't prevent folks from enjoying it.

La Haine - My joint favourite film with True Romance but watched it for the first time in over a decade about 6 months ago. If you love films and dont mind subtitles this is a must watch as its brilliant. If youre into mainly blockbusters, action movies and special effects this might not be for you

Watched La Haine last night. Very impressed. Works just as well as an atmospheric piece as it does a drama. Reminded me a little bit of This Is England, which I wasn't expecting.

Yep the story is a bit of a backing track. Its so well scripted, shot and acted and provides a genuine social commentary of what life was like on the Parisian banlieues in the 90s

Budget debut for young film director a few years ago. Set in east London, 'Ill Manors' is brilliant, but I suspect not to everyone's taste.
