Really looking forward to this one.

I can't remember too much of the game because at least half of my concentration was on the transistor radio pressed to my ear.

I was about 11 and went on a mini bus with my dad and his mates, found a photo recently that was from the paper of me on his shoulders on the pitch. Fantastic day from start to finish, I was left to fend for myself at FT  luckily found my Dad and his mates on the pitch. I still have my Burnley shirt I wore that day and the ticket stub, green paper if I remember rightly

What a day & night that was

That was the day of my Grandads 80th and we’d arranged a surprise party for him at the WMC he went to.

He lived in Liverpool so we drove over in the morning to pick him up, then me my brother & dad brought him back over to Burnley to watch on the big screen.

We left mum in Liverpool to “catch up with friends” when really she was setting up there room for the party.

We watched the game then drove back to Liverpool got ready to go “out for a meal” but popping to club for a quick drink first.

As well as buying my grandad drinks for his birthday people were buy my & my brother drinks to celebrate promotion but it fair to say only 1 of the 3 of us was up and ready at 7am and it wasn’t the 22 & 18 year old grandkids

We couldn't get tickets so watched the game on the big screen from the upper tier of the James Hargreaves stand.

I remember struggling to find anywhere to park, ended up on a roundabout with the back end of the
car sticking out in the road.
And Stan's backward fall into the crowd. :)

I was fielding at point for the duration of this game in an early season game in Somerset... Wearing earphones and having a radio in pocket did annoy the rest of my team somewhat... ;)

Watched it from the JH lower.

I think I remember 3 of the other 4 teams that played a roll in our promotion that day - Gillingham, Brentford, Oldham and .....?

Gillingham needed to win against Wrexham to go up regardless to how our result went.

Mark McGregor scores the winning goal for Wrexham and was rewarded for it by us signing him the year after :)

Was just the Wrexham - Gillingham game. We were behind Gillingham on goal difference so just needed to better their result. Mark McGregor scored a belter for Wrexham

I'm still pretty surish that Brentford had an outside chance too, seem to remember having to check on what they were doing too.

Edit: Nah was just Gillingham, I've checked, sorry.

You're perhaps getting mixed up with the end of the Waddle season (97/98) when we had to beat Plymouth AND rely on Brentford losing.

Brentford lost despite playing aginst 10 men for much of the match, if memory serves me correctly.

I was playing cricket and couldn't attend either Scunny or the Turf for the big screen.
So I did the next best thing and stuck a 10er on Gillingham to win to jinx them.

The rest as they say, is history.

Was it the year before Gillingham were in the final as well when City scored them 2 last minute goals?

I had to be at work, organizing football pages with Press Association Sport in Leeds, and it was virtually impossible to focus on what I was supposed to be doing while getting updates from Scunthorpe and Wrexham. In the end I just couldn't wait for the shift to end so that I could celebrate!!

Two things stood out;

1.) The awful, and I mean awful standard of football. It was like they were playing with a balloon.
2.) The lack of time-wasting, even when we should have been. There seemed to be so much more action.

A few observations

Seen some Burnley fans I know - strange seeing how they were 20 years ago.

Dave Payton (Andy’s brother) shown right at the end. Sadly no longer with us.

Who honestly could have believed then that twenty years later we’d not gone back down?

That standard of football was as good as we’d seen in years but it really is poor compared to what we see now.

Yeah. My first game was in div 4 but can’t say I paid much attention to the standard of football. That was really poor mixed in with the odd bit of class from the likes of Little etc.

Can understand fans running on the pitch at the end of the game but a bit surreal to see people invading the pitch after our first half equaliser!

They said on commentary after one of our goals that the players had invaded the pitch and needed to get off. I’m glad they didn’t. :D

It was odd cos Cooky and Mellon could play, when allowed, but the plan was hoofball. In fairness we did start with 3 number 9s even if two were playing wider.

I was in the Scunthorpe main stand for the game. Final whistle I ran on the pitch towards the Burnley fans coming on from the away end. Could see a few Burnley lads looking at me charging towards them thinking I was some nutter from Scunthorpe. Luckily a couple of mates saw me and we started celebrating together or would probably have got a kicking of our lot.

I didn’t move at the final whistle because I knew there were still around six minutes to play at Wrexham. I know Gillingham would have had to score twice but I wasn’t going to celebrate until I was certain.

Thought this was 7.45 for some reason. Fast forward to the end. Brilliant scenes. Thank god the result when for us with all those on the pitch 8-). Wouldn’t at the time but would be brilliant watching now had Gillingham turned it around whilst those Burnley fans were on the pitch.
