Tested yesterday.
Our household (3) were tested yesterday at Manchester Airport, staff car park. My wife is a staff nurse working on a Covid ward. Testing went smoothly with minimum waiting time. Test took place at 7pm. First result came through at midnight and final result at 8am today. All negative. So far so good.

Know a few who have been through it. All seem to think it's been very well run. Not a nice test though.

Hi Darnhill, good to learn of your experience. Can I ask how far you needed to travel for the test?Darnhill Claret wrote: ↑Fri May 08, 2020 1:48 pmOur household (3) were tested yesterday at Manchester Airport, staff car park. Stay safe, especially Mrs Darnhill.
Re: Tested yesterday.
Glad the results were negative. What prompted the test? or is it going to be a regular checkup?Darnhill Claret wrote: ↑Fri May 08, 2020 1:48 pmOur household (3) were tested yesterday at Manchester Airport, staff car park. Re: Tested yesterday.
Yes, travel was approx 25 miles each way. I’ll accept your good wishes on behalf of my wife, lol.
Yes it’s true there is a degree of unpleasantness attached to the test but in the grand scheme of things I’ll take it.

The test was because my wife works on a Covid ward and her mother had query mild symptoms.

Which one of you had symptoms and how many days into it?Darnhill Claret wrote: ↑Fri May 08, 2020 1:48 pmOur household (3) were tested yesterday at Manchester Airport, staff car park. Re: Tested yesterday.
So when is she to be re-tested as even if she had the virus pick up rate from testing is only about 75%
Re: Tested yesterday.
Is that 1 in 4 that have had it are not picked up or 1 in 4 that have it are not picked up?
I’d assumed, wrongly by the sound of it, that the test was pretty accurate.

Re: Tested yesterday.
The test is pretty specific ie not many false positives so if it is positive you are probably carrying the virus but it is sensitivity that is a problem and i think at best it is 75% so that if you have 4 with the virus, 3 will test positive on a single test. In China and I am now talking about the very sick, the radiologists on reviewing the CT scans were better at diagnosing Covid-19 than the test for the virus known as RTPCR which was positive in about 60% of cases on first testing. One problem is how good the sampling is and I think up your nose is better than throat swabbing but it has to be a good poke up the nose. You could test positive too if you have dead virus most likely when you are getting better and this maybe the reason why some have been said to get the virus twice. There is a lot of hype about the test from the papers I have researched and it is clear that this virus can be transmitted when people are well so that if for example going with the above sensitivity you test 1000 folk who are well and 1 in 50 actually have the virus ie 20 people, then statistically you will miss 5 people who have the virus but no one knows which ones have it in those 1000.

Re: Tested yesterday.
First of all, my wife says thank-you for the positive responses to her working practice.
To answer some of the questions posed, we took the first available time slots given. The initial testing was for frontline staff who had self-isolated to get them back to work ASAP. Mel fell into the next category for frontline staff. Just getting ready for a 13 hour shift this morning at Royal Oldham.

Same thing is happening here. If the patient is showing all the classical signs of covid, including the imaging, they are treated as covid.
I’ve known patients who have come back positive after 3 negative results. It’s not the best
Re: Tested yesterday.
Is it possible they caught it after the 3rd test?

Re: Tested yesterday.
I think that depends who the individual is. My post was based on people who to quote Stan "a blind man on a galloping horse" would say they had Covid-19. The facts are that this test at best is 75% sensitive although about 99% specific meaning you will get 25% false negative results and 1% or less false negative. It is also important to realise that is not a test for live virus but uses a technique where the sample has bits of the Covid-19 virus RNA amplified to a level that can be detected-those bits may have come from dead virus in someone who is now not infected. It is possible that those thought to have had this twice have tested negative falsely after having the virus and then the test has been positive a second time. Like all tests, they are most useful in supporting clinicians in diagnostic work ups and in this case because of its sensitivity less useful in contact tracing and in any epidemic one manages the sick as if they have the disease when showing symptoms. One reason why this thing is such a barsteward is because some folk may have this and never become ill.
I have no idea what the sensitivity of the testing is in the various labs who are running tests in the UK and abroad and it maybe the case that using different things called primers, they are able to improve sensitivity but I have not seen anything to say that sensitivity has improved.
Finally as mentioned elsewhere the test is heavily dependant on how good swabbing is and I have copied and pasted this below.
"Most experts believe that problems with sample collection are the main culprit behind inaccurate testing. False negative results are likely occurring because health care providers aren’t collecting samples with enough of the virus for the tests to detect.
This can happen because someone doesn’t insert a swab deep enough in the nose or doesn’t collect enough of the sample. False negatives could occur if a person is tested too early or too late during their infection and there isn’t a lot of virus in their cells. And finally, errors can happen if a sample sits too long before being tested, which allows the viral RNA to break down.
This relatively high risk of false negatives is why doctors don’t just rely on a test to determine if a person has the coronavirus. If a person presents with classic symptoms of COVID-19 and is in an area with an outbreak, doctors will often diagnose a person with the disease is spite of a negative test."

We are being told that all NHS front line staff are being tested regulatly.Darnhill Claret wrote: ↑Sun May 10, 2020 6:13 amFirst of all, my wife says thank-you for the positive responses to her working practice.

I don't understand why a staff nurse on a Covid ward has to wait 7 weeks for 1 test.

Re: Tested yesterday.
The problem is not the PCR test itself, but the taking of the sample (swab). As mentioned previously on this thread, having a swab placed high up in to the nasal cavity and also the back of the throat is unpleasant, and provokes a natural ‘gagging’ reaction,
It is difficult enough for a trained person to get a decent sample on the swab to analyse, the idea that members of public should be expected to take decent quality samples, with the home test kits, is very questionable.

Re: Tested yesterday.
I know someone who has suffered from the virus for the last few weeks. She said it’s extremely unpleasant. She’s younger than me, and in otherwise good health.

Re: Tested yesterday.
Pleased to read all is well.
My sister is being tested regularly as she works in a care home.
She says the nasal swab is very unpleasant, the oral one not so bad

That is truly appalling, when they are posting out to others, to get their 100k. Next you will be telling me she has to take her own pinny and her Burnley scarf, for PPE!

Re: Tested yesterday.
As I understand it, it was either 2 or 3 weeks ago when the government made testing more widely available and said that all frontline staff could be tested, but the rider was that they would start with those that were self isolating. Now they have greater capacity it is frontline staff and those who have symptoms, but you still had to apply. They didn’t come knocking.
Re: Tested yesterday.
No the patient had classic symptoms on admission and clearly had covid at that point.
I got tested on Friday after developing a cough. I requested the test Thursday evening, was tested on Friday morning and negative result came back Sat morning meaning I was able to come to work today. I didn’t miss any time off work so worked well
