Re: ARTICLE: Jimmy Adamson – February 1970 to January 1976
I think, in many ways, I prefer to remember Adamson the player although there's little doubt that he was a very good coach but probably not the best man manager. As a player, he must have been very unfortunate not to represent his country but to play that number of games for one club, lead them to winning the league and into Europe, makes him, in my eyes, to be a true Clarets legend.
It's impossible to say what would have been achieved if players hadn't been sold...maybe he would have had the team of the seventies. What happened between him and Bob Lord will probably never be known but nothing can change the fact that Adamson was a magnificent player in his day and one that I feel privileged to have seen play on many occasions.
Thanks for such a good write up.

Surat agreed, Adamson was a claret of the highest order.
We need to remember all his positive contributions to our club not his latter days, few will serve the club better.

Sura the bitterness Adamson developed towards Lord is pretty much covered in the Adamson book. Once Lord retired from the butcher business he devoted all his time to the club and began to interfere more and more. Then the sale of Dobson was the last straw for Adamson.

A few weeks before Christmas 1975 my mum told me Lord was going to sack Adamson. The cleaner had told her, she’d heard them arguing and Lord saying he was going to sack him. And it was all down to some money that Lord owed Adamson.Rodleydave wrote: ↑Sat May 09, 2020 10:49 pmSura the bitterness Adamson developed towards Lord is pretty much covered in the Adamson book. In all my working life, the best and usually the most accurate information about what was happening in and around the office came from the cleaners! It was rare for them to be wrong...they might have been hopeless at cleaning but as a source of information, there was no one better or more accurate.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Sat May 09, 2020 10:58 pmA few weeks before Christmas 1975 my mum told me Lord was going to sack Adamson. As I said earlier on this thread, I still prefer to remember Adamson the footballer.

Definitely where I worked the cleaners always knew more than anyone else - this one might not have been true but Adamson was gone within no time just as she'd told my mum.Suratclaret wrote: ↑Mon May 11, 2020 3:52 amIn all my working life, the best and usually the most accurate information about what was happening in and around the office came from the cleaners! Have you any plans to do a game by game run down of the 1973/4 season, Tony?

The plan was to start with the 72/73 season through to 75/76 on the 50th anniversary, it was one that was started. But, given I've got some of it ready I am probably going to start doing it this summer given we are probably not likely to be going to football.claretfern wrote: ↑Mon May 11, 2020 10:57 amHave you any plans to do a game by game run down of the 1973/4 season, Tony?

We were close to winning the league in 74/75. March arrived and we were genuine contenders but ultimately we faded as the squad just didn't have the depth necessary for the run-in. Recall a 1-1 home draw v Liverpool where we played them off the park in the first half but only had a one goal lead. Liverpool pressed in the second half, McDermott equalised and that really marked the beginning of our decline over the next 14 months.

We ended that seasons with the likes of Finn, Dixey & Parker in the team because of the injuries.Silkyskills1 wrote: ↑Mon May 11, 2020 7:18 pmWe were close to winning the league in 74/75. ' Finn, Dixey & Parker ' sounds like a firm of solicitors in an obscure market town.

They would have been better off soliciting in an obscure market townrandomclaret2 wrote: ↑Mon May 11, 2020 8:06 pm' Finn, Dixey & Parker ' sounds like a firm of solicitors in an obscure market town.

Re: ARTICLE: Jimmy Adamson – February 1970 to January 1976
The money that Lord owed Adamson was allegedly around £4000. There was a letter floating around for some while in Adamson's possession that mentioned the money. Adamson showed it to Fletcher and Waldron on one of their visits in is later life.
The scam that Adamson and Lord cooked up together to make money out of the sale of Gawthorpe was the real eye opener... and also involving the Lowerhouse land that Lord owned. All documented int Lord book and the source of all the info was in the minutes of the board meetings that were made available. There was some real scheming going on by the pair of them... As a result the club bought the Lowerhouse land from Lord... who then of course wanted it back later when he saw how the value had increased... and eventually threatened to sue the club of which he was still chairman. It's conjecture but maybe the 4000 was in connection with Adamson's cut of the land sale... that he never got... but that is just a maybe... The other suggestion was that Adamson had loaned him the money... but where would he get that kind of money from...maybe from a huge pay rise that Adamson was given at one stage... again maybe... mysterious things went on with club money that director Derek Gill uncovered.

And yep as Tony intimates, they were well sick of each other by the end of 75 with Lord wanting rid by then.
