ARTICLE: They got Worthy out

We should have been at Norwich today so we take a look back at a game there 13 seasons ago

Several things stick out about this game;

1 - I was rough as rats with an outrageous hangover in a near comatose state on my couch.
2 - dandeclaret was frothing with rage on the old board at Andy Gray either not being given man of the match or not being given 10 out 10 - can't remember which
3 - probably Andy Gray's best performance for us
4 - Doherty was a donkey
5 - the partonising arm around the shoulder from Cotterill was out of order
6 - we were excellent and it should have been a sign of things to come - what went wrong?

Watched that game in Amsterdam, while on my 30th do. I have a very hazy memory of the game.

I bet dandeclaret mentioned the bridge in his rants as well :) .

That performance was Cotterball at its best, Norwich were dismantled.

We won four and drew two out of the next six but it all fell apart when Gray got injured. Even so, to go from 2nd in the league to 18 league games without a win was astonishing. Gray scored in the last win before that run, against Leeds. His next goal was in the first win that ended the run, a 4-0 win against Plymouth.

When you look at those 18 games, we only scored 7 goals. With Gray out and then, when he came back being nowhere near fit, we just couldn't score. From the Plymouth game on we scored 16 in 8 games.

Didn't mind Cotterill, and thought on the main he did a pretty decent job, especially with having to sell his top strikers in January the first two seasons. Some of the football at the start of that 06/07 season was fantastic too.

He was very lucky to survive that 18 game run mind. Think he would have gone at most clubs

Cotterill joked when Gray got his injury that at least he wouldn't be forced to sell his striker in January as had happened in the previous two seasons. Steve Bruce once said a team is only as good as its strikers - this one sort of proved it. Interestingly though, Steve Jones missed a chunk of that season in the middle and he was an influence on the team playing down the left, none more so than in this game at Norwich. He was outstanding.

Jones was very good that day from memory. Shame that his Burnley career petered out

Jones took Graham Alexander to the cleaners in the 3-2 win over Preston around a similar time. What a Friday night that was!

He surprisingly looked a very good signing until he got his injury. The two strikers and two wide players were all outstanding that day.
