I've seen some football played on horrible pitches, but a ploughed field would have been better than that. 90 mins running around like that would be equivalent of 3 hours on todays pitches.
Just got me thinking when you remember the skills of Leighton James, Dave Thomas, Willie Morgan and all, how do you think they would have faired playing on modern pitches.....

Just got me thinking when you remember the skills of Leighton James, Dave Thomas, Willie Morgan and all, how do you think they would have faired playing on modern pitches.....

That season, on pitches which were nowhere near as good as these days, there was an avaerage of 3.73 goals per game.
Compare that to the best PL season with 20 teams participating and the 2018/19 surpassed all records with 2.82 goals per game but it is much better these days -------it used to be boring watching all those goals being scored on those perfect pitches of yesteryear and no good players around.

Colburn, Jimmy Mac lived not far from me and I would often stop for a brief chat with him when I was out walking my dog. Talking once about the modern day game, he said he would have loved to have played on the modern 'snooker table' pitches (his words not mine). He mused that players like himself, Pointer, Connelly and Robson would have had a field day on the modern playing surface. He said that when they played away from home the first question was often "what's the pitch like", because they knew it could make such a difference to their performance.

Good as we were that season, I remain convinced that side did not peak until around September of the 1961/62 season. In that month we played 7 games including 4 away and won them all. In fact we didn't just win we blew all the teams away scoring 27 goals in those 7 games.

I remember going to Birmingham on the Saturday where we won 6-2, and then Leicester the following Wednesday with 6-2 again. 12 goals away from home in just 4 days. Simply sensational, with Mac at his imperious best and just unplayable.

We only scored 5 in the next away game at Fulham, major disappointment.

We did lose heavily at Ipswich early in the season but, for me, we blew it at the other end of the season. With ten games left we were comfortable and looking favourites to win the title, but then we beat Fulham in the FA Cup semi-final to reach Wembley and from that point we became preoccupied with the Cup.

Just one win from those last 10 league games and we effectively handed the title to Ipswich finishing 3 points behind them. The Cup was massive back then so it was understandable to a point and we had won the League just two years earlier. But in the end we lost to Tottenham at Wembley and therefore ended the season as runners-up in both the League and Cup. A massive anti-climax after playing such fantastic football.

Was it the Leicester 2-6 where Ray Pointer hit the ball so hard it scored but bounced out into play and the ref didn't award it?
If I remember correctly Leicester had very narrow nets back then and it could have hit the terrace wall behind.

It went through the net and the goal was given once they found the hole in the net
