Sport Club Freiburg
With the resumption of the Bundesliga, Burnley have been linked with SC Freiburg in various newspapers. SCF is a similiar club to BFC with a capacity of about 23,00 in the Schwarwaldstadion which I have visited about 20 times. However, the new stadium north of Freiburg, with a capacity of about 30,000, should be ready for season 2020-2021 whenever that starts ! The two managers, Sean Dyche and Christian Streich, also have similar careers. Streich was the youth team manager at SCF before moving through the ranks to become first team manager and has been at Freiburg for many years.

I went to Freiburg vs Mainz this season. Possibly one of the best football experiences I’ve enjoyed. Atmosphere second to none and great draught beer in seats above safe standing. What more could you want?

One of my favourite stadiums in a cracking little city in a brilliant location. Shame they’re moving.

Werder Bremen are my German team, goes back to a long standing family friendship forged just after the war. They've got a relegation battle on, so it should be interesting
Re: Sport Club Freiburg
Bayern Munich is my team. It’s a love affair which got of to the most remarkable of starts. As I began pouring the hot coffee into my mouth this morning I looked at the Bundesliga table to see who was top. It was Bayern Munich. That’s were it began. I’m Bayern through and through now!!

Is there still a problem with supporters in Germany, hence why there is a fence/netting behind each goal?

I had to google Freiburg to know where it is on the map. Looks like a great team to support.
What colours do they play in? No players on the pitch in photos and though I can see some red and white (?) scarves, no one seems to be wearing replica strip and these might be away fans, anyway.

They def play in red and white. Saw them play away at Dortmund in November 2018. Impressively they brought quite a few fans.

Arminia Bielefeld for me after a happy time about 15/20 years ago managing them on Championship Manager, currently top of Bundesliga 2 by 6 points, was worried promotion wouldn't happen due to the league being stopped, but now full steam ahead to win promotion and back in the Bundesliga next season.

Borussia Moenchengladbach for me (and that's not easy to say)! I have a mate from there who we used to do business with and who has visited the Turf on a couple of occasions. He loved it, and says he is now the sole member of the Borussia Moenchengladbach Clarets Supporters Club. Viva Borussia.

Borussia Mönchengladbach for me too. Syko are you the one I see regular in a gladbach hat?
Ironically my first gladbach game was away at Frankfurt who they face this weekend.
It stemmed from that trip. Long story short we were due to go to Stuttgart for weekend. Flew into Stuttgart but went to Frankfurt instead as a game was on.
Ended up in the away end. Made friends and now very good friends with a couple of lads in the away end. The free ale helped. But travelled to a lot of games with them now and they’ve been here also. Part of a group of us from different countries who stay in touch and have all been games together.
My first German game though was osnabruck brother and sister both stationed there and that was great.
German football in general is brilliant.

Re: Sport Club Freiburg
My German friend Manfred is also a Gladbach as well as a Burnley fan ! He has been over many times to watch Burnley along with other Black Forest Clarets. We were planning to watch Liverpool v Burnley on 25 April !! Gladbach tend to be inconsistent, beating the top sides then failing to win games against inferior opposition. My claim to fame is interviewing Gunther Netzer at Southport FC when Gladbach were training the day before they played Everton FC in November 1970 (Everton won on penalties). Netzer was reported as being injured before the game and did not train but played in the game!!

Hi Cricketfield. No not got a Gladbach hat just a scarf and mug. Not seen any German games but am praying for the day we draw Borussia Moenchengladbach in a European competition. I took the German lad down the Bridge pub after a Burnley game. I thought he'd feel at home there as they had Erdinger on draught. What did he order? A pint of Stella!

Re: Sport Club Freiburg
Schalke 04 for me for no other reason than they got huge crowds in the 1970s / 1980s when they weren’t very good
Saw them once in front of 71,000 at their old ground (Park Stadion?) in the derby at home to Borussia Dortmund in the mid 90s. Fierce atmosphere but needless to say they lost 1-3
Gelsenkirchen where they play is a bit of a dump though, we stayed in Dortmund which had some cracking bars

Agree on gelsenkirchen. Although loved the stadium and atmosphere at schalke. Our mates from gladbach sorted tickets out for schalke Stuttgart the day after gladbach played koln in the derby.whalleyclaret wrote: ↑Fri May 15, 2020 3:29 pmSchalke 04 for me for no other reason than they got huge crowds in the 1970s / 1980s when they weren’t very good

Cracking stadium, preferred the game in Frankfurt though for the place itself

My pal at Moenchengladbach has taken up the offer of the cardboard cutout. He suggests the Clarets do the same. I'm not sure, would be hard to tell who was a real fan and who was a cutout!

Schalke 04 for me too, despite having worked twice in Bavaria. It's a result of a school exchange programme in the 80s where the German lad I stayed with was a Schalke fan. I studied in Rostock for a year when at Uni so always look out for their results too.

Re: Sport Club Freiburg
I was living near Freiburg until very recently. It is an extremely pleasant city. Was virtually impossible to get standing tickets for league games, the only match I went to was a real throwback, standing on a terrace (30cm high concrete steps with randomly spaced crush barriers ie. NOT « safe standing « of the type at Dortmund), and folk drinking beer and smoking. I loved it, even the smoking!
Re: Sport Club Freiburg
Looks like having BT Sport is finally going to come in handy! I'll be watching the Dortmund Schalke game at 2.30 I think. Hoping for a few goals.

I am lucky enough to get free tickets for SC Freiburg games. I have a friend who has a kiosk (mainly beer and sausages) under the home stand begind the goals at the standing area of the ground. He also has a pub called the Swamp opposite the Ganter Brewery not far from the Schwarzwaldstadion. I have met the Team Manager Christian Streich at the Swamp on a Monday evening following a Saturday game. Christian used to cycle down to the pub from his home near the ground.

Matchday is back. The shirt is out. Been waiting for this. Always was a closet fan of German football. I think it came from my dads strange love for this lad. Always shouting his name whenever the Germans came on TV. Distinctly remember how much he loved him during the semi finals of 1990 and 1996. He even fondly named my brother and I little Kuntz. Obviously talented kids!

Freiburg score. Listening to the commentator, and watching them play, they come across as being very efficient and workmanlike.

Burnley 1989 - I was in Gelsenkirchen too in 2006 when England lost to Portugal. I was sitting behind Badeel and Skinner who were absolutely gutted when England lost. I had also met them in Berlin the day before at the Germany v Argentina match.
