I can’t believe I’m admitting this, but I was gutted when Eurovision was cancelled this year. We accidentally watched it with my 6 year old daughters last year and we loved it. I used to despise it

Eurovision is great fun if you take it in the spirit it’s intended.
The odd genuinely decent song too.

Re: Eurovision song contest BBC1
one of the benefits of this lockdown is no Eurovision contest
On the plus side I suppose a live performance without an audience but shown on TV of Waiting for Godot is a possibility as it should be feasible to have a big 2+ metre bench and social distancing for the few additional actors whilst remakes of EL Cid and Ben Hur will be off for a while

agreed in fact now would be a good time to scrap it forever. when i was a kid it was kitsch but fun and actually had well crafted songs.
now it's just an exercise in bad taste and poisonous politics.

Agreed! Waterloo top tune but that was when serious musicians were involved, now it's become a parody, and is in danger of eating itself.

I disagree. Think it's doing fine. The basics are:-
1. It's really meant to be fun. The fans that go really enjoy it for the experience of the thing. It would be like going to a world cup when you support Scotland. Not like going to the Turf where you have a vested interest in who wins
2. The music has improved. Last year was the best for ages. Now I know that isn't saying much, but you can't exactly say the same about popular music in general right now. Most of that is shyte.
3. UK, other than the eurovision fans, look down their noses too much at it, blaming all sorts of things for UK failures other than the obvious. We've submitted poor songs too often. Some I'd have expected to do better, but there are usually a good few that are better than ours.
4. Don't blame the voting public. They are far more reliable than the "expert judges" who appear to just vote for tosh that is mainstream popular at the time, downgrade cultural and regional input and want everything to sound like Ed sheeran or Taylor swift.
5. Thank f there are less boy bands with synchronised routines in it now.
6. Waterloo just sums it up really. Overrated. Contrary to the above, they weren't particularly famous at the time, and the UK who were not then used to that sort of music gave it nul points. I'm afraid that a substantial portion of our populous only like things they've heard lots of times already.
7. There's generally only one nutty song each year, but that's the one that the UK Anti-media focus on as they look down their noses at the thing.
