Ian Curtis (Joy Division)
Staggered to learn it's 40 years today that he sadly took his own life at the mere age of 23.

Saw them a few times in the late 70s. At Rafters and The Factory are a couple that I remember.
They were simply unique.
Curtis could hold and audience easier than anyone I've ever seen.

Best group ever. Unknown Pleasures is the soundtrack to late 70's Manchester.

Saw him perform with Joy Division at Eric's in Liverpool just a few weeks before his death.

Re: Ian Curtis (Joy Division)
He killed himself exactly 10 years to the day before I was born but the fact he'd nearly be a pensioner now has shocked me a bit, and made me feel old
Re: Ian Curtis (Joy Division)
Long article and interviews (with Hookie and Steven Morris) in The Independent. Somehow or other I don't think JD would have lasted long even if Curtis hadn't killed himself. I think he'd said it all (just my opinion).

Re: Ian Curtis (Joy Division)
Unknown Pleasures one of the greatest albums of all time - never felt quite the same connection with Closer - possibly because it was so much a prelude to Ian Curtis' untimely death
Anyone whose a fan will have seen them already but Control and Joy Division (both 2007) are both an excellent watch
40 years - that's a sobering thought

Re: Ian Curtis (Joy Division)
True stories
Friend of mine went to see Buzzcocks at king George's. After the gig my mate was in the entrance waiting for a lift to take him back to padiham. Guy comes up and asks if he has a light. He didn't, but one of the others he was with did. The guy , starting a conversation, said "what did you think of us, we were the support?" It was ian Curtis. Mates daughters boast of "my dad new Ian Curtis!"
Theres a live "At Prsston Warehouse' CD that was released a good few years ago. Towards the end of the gig Joy Division were having feed back problems and the song they're playing falters to a premature end, while they sort the sound out. During the delay it sounds like a young woman that grabs the mike to announce, " if you're from Burnley , your bus is leaving in 5 minutes" The guy who organised that mini bus was Pepe Bona a local face on the Burnley/ pendle punk scene.

Preston The Warehouse Nightclub 28/2/80 (full gig)
https://youtu.be/PKg3abc1A6Q
Heart And Soul (and the Burnley announcement) starts around the 20 minute mark
It was a trouble hit gig from a music viewpoint. The main problem being that all Joy Divisions electronic equipment had been wired directly to the bar pumps power supply which subsequently kept shorting out. This is noticeable by the constant dropping out of any bass in the live sound mix
