Re: ARTICLE: Moving into the 1980s
That 5 year period was surely one of the strangest and most turbulent in our history...talk about a roller coaster ride. From falling into the Lower Divisions for the first time ever, to the false dawn of promotion, then the surreal 82/3 season of relegation but amazing Cup runs...not to mention the managerial shenanigans, and of course all ending up with us in the Fourth Division for the first time. We also saw some our best and worst players in living memory...Has there ever been a 5 year spell of such highs and lows ?

Re: ARTICLE: Moving into the 1980s
Not many highs though - just the promotion in 1981/82. Despite the cup wins, the following season was nothing short of a disaster. Three times we were beaten in five consecutive league games and once more on four occasions.
Re: ARTICLE: Moving into the 1980s
Wasn't John Bond manager at Swansea when we were relegated to Division 4?

Basis of a great squad that needed a few additions in the right area's and we would have been fine, also as stated on the Miller manager thread, Big Vince was a big loss that season.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Tue May 19, 2020 1:49 pmNot many highs though - just the promotion in 1981/82. Started good with a couple of big wins, but then we dropped

Re: ARTICLE: Moving into the 1980s
Losing Vince left us defensively poor. Laws & Wharton had proved to be very good at full back when we played with a back five but were found out defensively with just a four.Wokingclaret wrote: ↑Tue May 19, 2020 3:38 pmBasis of a great squad that needed a few additions in the right area's and we would have been fine, also as stated on the Miller manager thread, Big Vince was a big loss that season.

Good players that they were, Dobson & Phelan were not a defensive pair in a back four and behind them we had Stevenson who was dreadful for a lot of that season.

Re: ARTICLE: Moving into the 1980s
Yes and he had Tommy Hutchison there as well. Whatever Bond was or wasn’t, giving Benson the job was a suicidal decision.
In 1982/83 Bond left Man City at the beginning of Feb when they were in the top half. Benson took over and by May they’d been relegated. His record was played 17, won 3, drew 2, lost 12.

Hutch was still with us at that time. But yes, Benson was a suicidal decision with what was a very good squad on paper at least

Re: ARTICLE: Moving into the 1980s
Course he was - was offered the manager's job when Benson went, then found out they'd given it to someone else. Decided to walk then and went to Swansea where, despite his age at nearly 38 when he left us, he went on to play another 178 league games.Wokingclaret wrote: ↑Tue May 19, 2020 4:09 pmHutch was still with us at that time. It was Barry Powell who had already joined Bond at Swansea.

Re: ARTICLE: Moving into the 1980s
As you say, didn't miss a game for us in two seasons and then played all those games for Swansea and still continued playing after that in non-league. Burnley fans had no time for him initially but he won them over.
He was told by Teasdale that the job was his when Benson left then heard that we'd given it to Buchan. Buchan then offered him a coaching role and he told him where to get off and went to Swansea.
Re: ARTICLE: Moving into the 1980s
Good pro was Hutchison. Played over a thousand first team games in his career and was a decent player for us from what I remember.

Re: ARTICLE: Moving into the 1980s
I thought he was outstanding for us - quite how we went down with the likes of him, Phelan, Overson, Hird, Taylor in the team takes some believing but then you see the name Benson.

Re: ARTICLE: Moving into the 1980s
I forget, was Reeves going to be his assistant. Couldn't of worked out any worse than what happened with Buchan! who had brought in Cavanagh....

Scotty was still around at the beginning and he didn't play Flynn so he left. We still had Biggins too.

Re: ARTICLE: Moving into the 1980s
He sidelined Flynny which was downright ridiculous. Scott & Biggins were there all the way through the season. Also refused to play Alan Taylor for much of the season.Wokingclaret wrote: ↑Tue May 19, 2020 4:55 pmScotty was still around at the beginning and he didn't play Flynn so he left. Re: ARTICLE: Moving into the 1980s
The board appointed some truly horrendous managers Benson Cavanagh and Buchan also some seriously wrong appointments such as Bond wrong man wrong club.

Re: ARTICLE: Moving into the 1980s
Did anyone play for Burnley in all 4 divisions?
I've got Dobson Stevenson Scott Flynn in 1,2and3
James and Rodaway in 1,2 and 4
Overson Davis Pender and Taylor in 2,3and 4
Have I missed anyone? Perhaps Jakub? Kindon?

Re: ARTICLE: Moving into the 1980s
Billy Rodaway was the first to play for us in all four divisions and the only one since is Joe Jakub.
