BBC3/BBC4

Rumours abounding that BBC 3 will return to our TV screens in the near future,BBC 4's future is more uncertain.

BBC3 was a useless channel and wasn't missed at all. BBC4 is a wonderful channel and will be sorely missed by many as perhaps the only free to air channel dedicated to the arts. Ludicrous if true.

As I understand it..and read something a while back.theyre gonna combine the two so to speak if that's the correct word.BBC 3 in name But including BBC 4s programmes which I agree on mainstream tv is Very good viewing!

No doubt BBC is missing its youth... (i mean "yoot") and "culture" targets.

Thus, as per the rest of the country, the lowest common denominator is championed! (you get me?)

So...coming of age drama set during the Second Punic War?

The turnaround will be formally announced as part of the BBC's annual plan on Wednesday, but there was no news about the fate of BBC Four, which has been rumoured for the axe.

You just have to laugh at the disassociated charade of self-objectivity the BBC is obligated to impose on itself. It's almost satire. A BBC news article reporting of rumoured plans of the restructure of the BBC, like a doctor self-diagnosing his own cancer and breaking the news to himself in his bathroom mirror. 'Here are a few leaflets with help and advice on the next steps' *passes leaflet from left hand to right hand*

I forget who it is but there's a poster on here who was interviewed for a BBC documentary as an eye-witness to the events surrounding the dissolution of the monasteries.

I was saddened at the news of bbc4 being considered for closure, but I realised I haven’t watched anything on there for years. It’s used to be brilliant but I can’t think of anything it’s has produced recently that I would miss.

I’ve probably watched more on bbc3 via the iPlayer

They will / want to cut BBC4 but make over 75's pay for the Licence Fee many of whom watch BBC4. Double standards and another dumbing down.

The BBC have always wanted over 75s to pay the licence fee, it was the government that decided they shouldn’t. So it was the government that paid for it then decided that the BBC should pay for the idea it never had because it couldn’t afford it anymore. Yet somehow the BBC is the bad guy in this.

I've never understood the logic of 75 years old being the threshold for a free TV licence. If they can afford to pay for a TV licence after they have reached state pension age then I'm not sure what magically changes on their 75th birthday. Do pensioners get poorer as they get older?

Maybe sight or hearing problems impair the viewing of the older ones. It's nice to be nice.

Get some adverts on, no such thing then as requiring a licence. Get pricks like Lineker, Norton, etc etc on salaries that reflect their talent, and Bobs your Uncle. Sorted. Money washing around to produce decent tv, and not endless " chances to see again ", Some Mothers Do Ave Em, and other shoite. :D

The strangest thing about cancelling BBC3 was, on Sky, they then gave the BBC Red Button it’s own channel number.
I miss some of the comedies but do enjoy the Sat. night 9pm foreign dramas on BBC4. Hoping not to lose them in this re-jig.

I remember when there was only 4 channels and you had to get out of your chair to push the button to change channels.

Yes if they shut down BBC4 and over 75's have to pay the licence.

I recall (along with a fair few on here I would think) when there was only one channel in black and white and programmes only covered part of the day (the Test Card otherwise). No TV at all in my house for the first 5/6 years of my life. .

c 90% of what I usually watch on TV is sport (especially via BT Sport & SkySport). I'm really struggling to find anything on BBC (any channel) to watch these days. Ive become pretty dischuffed with having to pay a licence fee over the past few years anyway. There is the odd gem but Im not at all sure its worth £13 per month when Netflix is cheaper than that.

Is Netflix that cheap, blimey! didn't know that, when you put it in those terms it puts the BBC tax,and it is a tax because it's compulsory into perspective.

I'll be :o if the licence fee in it's current form exists in the next decade, there's so many different ways of accessing programming now,it's difficult to see how the BBC can justify it's existence.

BBC4, along with 6 music, are the best things the BBC produce. The way they present the news has gone to the dogs. Used to be a balanced and neutral viewpoint but now they spend all of their time getting so called experts with a hidden agenda telling us what we should thing. I wish they would save money by getting rid of Laura Kueunssberg and the like. I don't want my license fee going to some nobody who has no real life experience but probably has a degree in journalism/ American Politics telling me how I should think. Rant over.

Still find the idea of having to pay for state sponsored media a little strange. Be you over 75 or not

Tim, I asked a reasonable question and what you've offered is not an answer. I have no problem with society deciding that state pension age is the threshold at which you get concessions but I don't see the logic in giving a product/service away to people simply because they're 75. It's an arbitrary age. Why not 65? Why not 55? And if you give TV licences away at 75 why not make all TV free at 75?

I have no answer...theres no logic. Like in lots of things I suppose.maybe its just something to look forward to like the bus pass. Which for reasons of Laziness and having a car personally I havent got round to getting one .but you are correct theres no logic .

Sky sports is a bad example because over 75's will still have to pay the bbc tax if they want to subscribe to that.
So will under 75's I suppose
