Great Sporting upsets over the years

Post by conyoviejo » Thu May 21, 2020 9:40 am

That you have witnessed or watched. I will start with the 1998 Rugby league Challenge cup final .

Sheffield Eagles 17 v Wigan Warriors 8

Sheffield were massive underdogs but put Wigan to the sword with a great performance much to my disgust ,but one I admired for their determination and fighting spirit..

Another one was Burnley 0 v Wimbledon 1 .. Say no more :(

Not so much an upset, and I'm not into horse racing but didn't a 100/1 outsider once win the Grand National when most of the horses fell? I think the horse was called Foinavon.

Cameroon v Argentina in the 1990 World Cup was certainly one of the most entertaining.

I quite enjoyed the 1987 FA Cup final between Spurs v Coventry and the Wimbledon v Liverpool final the year after two massive upsets that made the FA Cup special in those days

England v Australia at Headingley 1981 - maybe not an upset but the most amazing turnaround in a test match.

At one point

Australia 401/9 dec
England 174 & 135/7
England heading for an innings defeat

Eventually
Australia 401/9 dec & 111
England 174 & 356
England won by 18 runs

Ian Botham 149 not out and Bob Willis 8/43 - remarkable performances from two greats

Arguably the greatest 1500m race ever. The 1981 Bislett Games in Norway saw a world class 'field' including Olympic champion and current world record holder, Steve Overt. Also in the race a long-haired American runner, Tom Byers, whose sole aim was to lead the group out and be the 'hare'. Unfortunately it didn't go to plan and Byers maintained a healthy lead going into the final lap. Ovett came at him, pulling back 9 seconds on Byers in the final lap but it wasn't enough and Byers spoiled the party winning the race by one second. The elite runners were not a happy group but I thought it was bloody brilliant.

Following Greece can also include Denmark in 1992.

Especially as Denmark didn’t even qualify for the tournament.

I found myself watching it on youtube recently. Hilarious attempts at tackles. The first one particularly when he's halfway down the cellar steps but he still cleans him out anyway.

Remember him being on the rough end of stuff most the game, but the one when he runs into their half and a couple fail to nail him then the next one just wipes out is brilliant

Leicester's title win in 15/16-this was achieved over a 38 game season, not a one-off cup tie or even a KO tournament.

France 0 Senegal 1 2002 WC.

Scotland beating England in an ODI at the Grange.

Porto winning Champions League 2004.

Leicester winning the title were the longest odds in sports betting history I think. 5000/1

George Foreman, knocking out Michael Moorer in 1994 to win the IBF/WBA World Heavyweight Championship at the age of 45 ..... that night, he wore the same boxing trunks as he wore 20 years earlier, when he lost to Ali in the " Rumble in the Jungle " !!

I still remember the American commentator screaming " It happened ! It happened ", redemption indeed !! :o :o

Cassius Clay (as he was then) defeating Sonny Liston in February '64.

As a youngster I'd considered it inconceivable that any one could defeat the intimidating Liston, let alone the Louisville Lip.

It's not often I'm right but I was wrong again.

Devon Lock doing a belly flop onto the floor that Wilfred Zaha would be proud of. I'm not sure that it would be anywhere near so funny if it wasn't the Queen mother's horse.

When interviewed afterwards the horse said he had got a fishbone stuck in his throat and it had absolutely nothing to do with the 3 bottles of gin he had downed before being saddled up.

I’d go for that. It’s something to win a one off game, but to be the best over 9 months is remarkable.

nigel benn literally destroying gerald mcclellan.

benn was a huge underdog and got punched out of the ring in the first round.

what happened next was utter brutality.
