At least it will keep one of the 2 physio beds occupied for another year, JBG maintaining his residency on the other in the Defour suite.
I have no doubt this will turn out to be every bit as bad a deal as the Defour extension was....

It's not a deal, it's a right of his to extend his contract. (as far as I'm aware)Herts Clarets wrote: ↑Thu May 21, 2020 1:15 pmAt least it will keep one of the 2 physio beds occupied for another year, JBG maintaining his residency on the other in the Defour suite.

I'm a little surprised by this news.
He's my type of player but sadly he hasn't done enough since his serious injury.
Hopefully it works out.

I would of let him go, serious injury & never been the same player since it. He must surely be on a reduced contract over the next 12m i would of hoped?

Fairly surprised by this, unless it was an auto renewal or we've managed to get his wages down a bit. If the latter, probably worth an additional 12 months because there is ability there but really needs to get his head down and try and avoid the treatment table as much.

Glad we've taken the option. JBG also being injury prone and we have a good player between them.
Its easy to forget how well he was playing before that Leicester game, it would be great to see that Robbie back

The biggest problem he's had since getting fully fit in terms of getting back into the team is DwightColburn_Claret wrote: ↑Thu May 21, 2020 1:37 pmIts easy to forget how well he was playing before that Leicester game, it would be great to see that Robbie back

Makes perfect sense if you ask me. If McNeil picks up an injury we're desperately short of wide options. Revenue will be down because of the situation and I think we can kiss goodbye the idea of paying significant transfer fees for backup players for a few transfer windows. It's not an inspiring move, but it's realistic.

Re: Robbie Brady deal extended
I'm surprised to be honest, thought he'd be on his way. There must be better players out there that we could have attracted for the wages we'll be paying him. When he did play he was far too negative for me.

Re: Robbie Brady deal extended
Good player who has struggled since injury.
In the current climate we aren’t going to be splashing cash. So it’s a calculated gamble. And also bodes well on the club, not just casting him off when times are tougher.
Personally don’t think right now we should be going out spending so need to look after what we have.

Not sure why anyone is surprised. It was always on the cards before this current crisis and now we are in that it is even more important that we get him signed up.

Re: Robbie Brady deal extended
The club have shown faith in Robbie, time for him to prove them correct.
I'm very meh over this news,he's been stealing a wage for 2 years now,we can only hope this extended break has allowed the medical team to aid his recuperation.
More importantly hope this doesn't mean Dwight's moving on.

Maybe Brady signing for another 12 months might swing it,hope so Hendrick is a unsung hero and a particular favourite of mine.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu May 21, 2020 2:04 pmUnfortunately, it is all in Jeff's hands now, or his agents. Nothing we can do. We made him an offer.
Re: Robbie Brady deal extended
We have probably thought £2m in wages to pay him versus a lot more to replace him plus whatever wages on top.
Robbie has probably thought who else in current climate is going to give him that kind of contract right now.
We also have the possibility of losing Jeff and Lennon is also end of contract. This leaves us with 3 wingers - one who lots of clubs will be looking to buy, and 2 with injury issues so if he can get fit Brady probably thinks he has a good chance of playing regularly.
I get why some people would be surprised based on his form in the last 18 months / 3 years but it probably makes sense for the club and player to do this right now.

Think itll be with a view to getting something for him in terms of fee.
If he sets the world a light he goes for free next summer, if we dont sign him in he walks for free.
We are going to be quite thin on the ground anyway regardless, thsts without the big financial hit we could take.
Think our hand has been forced somewhat.
As for his input and contribution, it's been very little and very poor

Re: Robbie Brady deal extended
It’s a shame we couldn’t get him out on loan anywhere. He desperately needs games and looks like his confidence is shot.
Obviously a number of reasons why that didn’t happen but I’m sure it would have helped if it had been possible.

Re: Robbie Brady deal extended
As said in the link, he's only once started consecutive games since his injury in December 2017 and that was during the period when we were struggling as a team in Autumn 2018. Confidence comes with playing so I totally agree with you that he needs games.Bordeauxclaret wrote: ↑Thu May 21, 2020 2:37 pmIt’s a shame we couldn’t get him out on loan anywhere. Probably good for morale!
If his retention leads to Hendrick remaining, then all good.

Re: Robbie Brady deal extended
Who knows where he is mentally after his injury. Fans talk about players not getting back after injuries but nobody talks about what effect it can have mentally too. If I remember rightly wasn’t it a bit of freak injury against Leicester where his shot was blocked or something similar? Was only a few weeks later James McCarthy suffered his leg break in similar circumstances. Who knows what goes on in a players mind.

Re: Robbie Brady deal extended
Brady
I like Brady and I was gutted when he got injured just as things were falling into place for him. The fact that we have extended his contract is very different from him signing a new contract that runs for more than a year.
It will put us in the same position next year that we are currently facing with Hendrick. Namely, the prospect of losing him on a free transfer. We did exactly the same thing with Westwood, but he has voiced a clear desire to sign a new contract in recent days, which was music to my ears.
I think Brady could still be a good player for us, but if Hendrick doesn't sign a new deal then I would be happy to see us sell him when / if the transfer window opens. The dangerous thing that we are doing with these one year extensions is storing up problems for next year. Problems that I don't think we will have anywhere near enough money to solve.
Player Contracts
Out Of Contract In 2020 - With No Extension Option
Legzdins, Bardsley, Lennon, Hendrick and Koiki ( If I remember correctly ).
Out Of Contract In 2020 - With Extension Option
Hart, Dunne and O'Neill.
Out of Contract In 2021 - With No Extension Option
Brady, Lowton, Westwood, Gudmundsson, Long and Cork.
Recent Accounts
Our current transfer pot is about £40m
Taking out the carry over transfer money from the lucrative sale of Keane and Gray, we made an operational loss of 2m in the last set of accounts. In relation to our recent transfer business the money we have been paying out has exceeded the money we have earned from transfers.
We spent £22m over the course of the last three windows and managed to bring in £12m. In the season prior to that we spent £30m and brought in £7m. So it is highly likely that we will post a deficit on our player trading account next year instead of a surplus, because payments are usually made over a number of years.
Add that to an ongoing operational loss, along with the Corona cost, and a good chunk of that £40m will evaporate. If we bring in replacements this season that will lower what we have to spend next year even more. We could easily find ourselves in a position that requires us to replace six players with nowhere near enough money to do it.
That will require us to sell off some of our crown jewels to fund the major squad overhaul that we seem to be moving towards. If it comes to that the other clubs will look at our accounts, make the obvious deduction and bend us over a barrel. With all the talk about stretching our budget I don't think we have realised that the elastic in our trousers is in very poor shape. It won't take much to snap it, causing our pants to fall down which will expose our bare arse to the world.

Re: Robbie Brady deal extended
Logical for the club.
I think he needs regular football so I think letting him go for a small fee to a promoted side or Championship would be good for all involved. Not saying he isn't good enough for us but neither is he starting XI.

The ball is in Robbie's court now. No reason why he cant make the match day squad every week, play a key part if only as a sub who gets a regular slot, and you never know injuries to other wide men could give him an extended run. He has the ability to put the last 18 months behind him. Players like Ashley Barnes have proved this is possible at our club

In the light of what is happening at the moment, that deal, if it is still on the table, could be a very tempting one !ClaretTony wrote: ↑Thu May 21, 2020 2:04 pmUnfortunately, it is all in Jeff's hands now, or his agents. Nothing we can do. We made him an offer.
Re: Robbie Brady deal extended
I think the last good display I saw from him was almost three years ago away at Bournemouth. He was outstanding that night and that game stays in my memory. Sadly I haven’t seen much from him since. He has had a bad injury I know, however I would question the wisdom in extending his deal for a further 12 months. Having said that, if he does get a run in the team because of injuries to other players, I hope he does well.
