Re: ARTICLE: New York – New York
never knew they went to the states , kilmarnock of all teams too !!
poor amenities, and I bet that flight across the atlantic won't have been easy on the nerves 60 years ago.

That was another issue - they'd organised the flights but we didn't bother and sailed across.Wile E Coyote wrote: ↑Fri May 22, 2020 3:19 pmpoor amenities, and I bet that flight across the atlantic won't have been easy on the nerves 60 years ago.

Re: ARTICLE: New York – New York
I flew to New York in 1960 with my mother then sailed back a month later(dad was working there for 6 months and his company paid for me and mum to visit him, I was only 5 years old but can remember the propeller plane and landing in NY, must have taken ages to get there, maybe it was as well I don't remember much because of my age!Wile E Coyote wrote: ↑Fri May 22, 2020 3:19 pmnever knew they went to the states , kilmarnock of all teams too !!

Re: ARTICLE: New York – New York
I am curious now as to how long it would have taken, I suppose no one would have known any different back then, propeller planes were everywhere. But it must have been a huge big deal flying passengers 3000 miles back then in those planes.

I remember there was a 7-4 scoreline in that tour but can't recall the opposition. Was it a New York Select XI?

Re: ARTICLE: New York – New York
that must have been the most successful kilmarnock team of all time.
Re: ARTICLE: New York – New York
There isn’t much difference between the flight times early 60s to nowadays. Airlines fly the planes slower to use less fuel.Wile E Coyote wrote: ↑Fri May 22, 2020 5:17 pmI am curious now as to how long it would have taken, I suppose no one would have known any different back then, propeller planes were everywhere. Apart from the Concorde I’m not sure speed as ever been much of a priority.

thanks Dyched, I was reading about it after reading Tony's article.
Maybe not much difference to America, but flying from Australia was a long drawn out process by all accounts. It took forever apparently.

Probably their finest hour was in the European Fairs Cup in 1966/67 when they reached the semi-final before losing to Leeds. By coincidence we were also in that year's competition going out in the quarter-final to Eintracht Frankfurt.Wile E Coyote wrote: ↑Fri May 22, 2020 9:15 pmthat must have been the most successful kilmarnock team of all time.
Re: ARTICLE: New York – New York
I was quite surprised when I looked it up tbh. You’d have thought at least a couple of hours would have been knocked off. But when I thought about it, speed was never really the driving force behind airliners.Wile E Coyote wrote: ↑Fri May 22, 2020 9:33 pmthanks Dyched, I was reading about it after reading Tony's article.

I remember the Clarets going to New York but had forgotten all the details so it was good to be reminded of them.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Fri May 22, 2020 3:10 pmThe story of the 1959/60 championship season draws to a close with our trip to New York

This has been an absolutely fascinating series which has brought back so many wonderful memories of what was my first full season where I went to every home game and some away games plus some reserve fixtures and other games not involving the Clarets.
Each week I've looked forward to the account of the match plus the very interesting non football matters. Those that haven't read the series of articles have really missed out.
Many, many thanks CT.
