How good are they?

Especially on an oven bottom t/cake ..Wicked.

I find them a bit sickly. I’d never heard of them until I worked in Preston.

Yep,they are big in Preston.I think on a Friday for the locals there .A catholic treat I believe.

Not for me either. Never understood the fascination of just taties in pastry.

Need a bit of meat in there.

Which competitors would those be? Still one of the best is Oddie's. Not much better than an Oddie's savoury.

Modern day pies can describe modern day England very well.....

No one cares, it's all about the profit, it's a gloopy mess and it's tasteless.

The only reason some of us went on t' Turf in the late 80's (apart from being absolutely Keith Mooned and loving the Clarets ) was the meat and tatie pies.

I'm sure in the good old days pie makers like Bob Lord made sure their pies were full of nutritious goodness and never gave a second thought to profit

Ive always found Haffners pies very palatable. Reminds me of the period I was working down in Bristol. I took a cheese and onion pie down with me. The guy on the next (a local) desk to me enquired. ''What's the pie''?. I replied it's a cheese and onion. The look on his face, almost horrified. I said whats wrong with you. Apparently, Bristol had never had the pleasure of said gastronomic delight. I offered to bring him one next time. He refused with gusto.

Is a butter pie just potatoes in a pie!? That sounds bloody awful, and dry! I know they used to sell them at the ground but I never had one.

Why is it not just a potato pie?

The meat and potato pies (at the time of the butter pies) should have been renamed - a splash of gravy and a couple of grisly bits of mince hardly justified them using the word meat!

Their savoury is probably, no is their best product with pork and pepper 2nd.
However all their pastry products are greasy, their sandwiches are more bread than filling ( it's literally weighed out ) and their prices are shocking.

Also the fact they deal in pennies is annoying, why £1.56 and 1.02p etc for stuff get it to the nearest 5p at very least.

Always liked Oddies but was never a fan of their pies.

The pies at the butchers on Padiham Road are Milltown Pies and they are outstanding.

Would be great to see those pies on the Turf rather than the dross that Holland’s turn out.

For a pie to be at its best it should be inside a freshly baked teacake.

Haffners Snake and Pygmie all the way. Never had the opportunity for a Butter pie as yet but would give it a go.

I bought a pie at the last game before lockdown from Turf. Still not cooled down yet.

That's the reason. Preston is very much a catholic town (city now). I've never seen so many catholic churches. When I first worked in Preston the local butty shop only sold butter pies on a Friday for people who didn't eat meat on that day. I was told that the name Preston is an abbreviation for Priest Town.

Butter pies are a bit bland imho. A quality steak pie from a local butcher or independent bakers never fails to hit the spot, I was going through Padiham a few weeks ago and got one from a small bakers at top off town called Bertwistles and it was very good.
As has been mentioned before mash pie up a bit and eat warm on a well buttered tea cake, lovely.

As a Preston resident, can confirm. Also parched peas, which are sort of black peas with vinegar. Tastes a lot better than it sounds!

Mannings used to do a mean butter pie.

Booths supermarket supply a cracking family butter pie.
