Michael Keane's "Rock Bottom"

Post by evensteadiereddie » Sun May 24, 2020 8:55 am

Leaving aside what sounds like a nasty digestive condition, there's plenty of food for thought for those Clarets convinced that Keane's move to Everton showed him up for being the poor defender they thought he was.

I think most Burnley fans thought he was an average defender who we got a massive inflated record fee for.

Not sure how him admitting he was playing so poorly he had a mental breakdown is “plenty of food for thought” for that opinion?

I have always been under the impression that the overwhelming majority of Burnley supporters liked Keane, thought he was a very good player for us and would end up being for Everton.

Not an average defender at all, according to those in the know.

The food for thought, Winston and Frank, is for those who were quite pleased, gloated even, to see Keane, in their eyes at least, fail and being the "average" player they believed he was. Not injured, not lacking confidence, just average.

It's the same for most players who move on from us to potentially - and I stress potentially - bigger and better things.

Some resent them taking their opportunity, others wish them well.

Have you read it ? I think the whole point of the piece was that he wanted to "do it" but a foot so badly infected that he had to be hospitalised - and the subsequent lack of confidence in being able to perform to the highest level in a shite defence, prevented him from doing so.

I'm sorry I'm confused (not difficult!) - who's Frank?

I agree Keane was certainly not an average defender for us. He was excellent.

Factuafrank "liked" Winston's post, unsurprisingly, but has removed it. You had me wondering myself for a minute there.

Keane was a tremendous player for us, he owed us nothing. The defence he was drafted into at Everton would have shredded most players' nerves.

Michael Keane is an outstanding defender. I’d have him back in a flash. He might have to sit in the bench a while though.

Keane was superb for us.

Some Burnley fans don’t rate him anymore because he left to a bigger club. Some fans can’t handle players leaving to better themselves and their careers. We had comment like “Useless without Mee, Mee made him better than what he was”.

Had Mee had gone instead we’d get the opposite comments.

He did a great job for us. Who there at that end can forget the Brighton very late (double) equaliser. That goal meant so much for us in the push for promotion as it deprived BHA of 2 points and gained us 1 point.
He consistently defended very well for us too or "big" clubs wouldnt have been sniffing around.
It hasn't worked out great for him at Goodison but I always like to see him play well (excepting games v us of course). Hopefully he's still got some good years left him in and now over his injury/psychological problems.

Keane is an outstanding defender. Even the best central defenders can be made to look silly if the managers tactics are wrong.

Some players you just know on first viewing that they’re a cut above. Three examples in recent years: Keane, Ings and Cork.

An excellent player for us overall. Benefited from who was playing along side him. Didn’t start off too great at Everton but as said above it wasn’t an organised defence beforehand. He wouldn’t walk back into our defence at present though.

Keane was colossal in the season we were last promoted and continued his form the year back in the PL. His Burnley form got him an England cap, which says it all. BFC suited him-he was a king pin. However like a number of other ex BFC players he did not maintain that form after moving, and is probably suffering from having no Dyche at the club to mentor him

Not only his defensive qualities but the goals at Brighton and against Boro were huge factors in Burnley's promotion - I wish him well.

I thought it was another Bardsley & Rooney type video.

I was expecting ( and secretly hoping ) it was a video of Keane slamming Calvert-Lewin through a table...

People forget that Burnley achieve more than the sum of the individual parts and that teamwork and togetherness can achieve so much.

Keano was great when he had his Burnley team mates around him. His last minutes goals against Boro and Brighton were vitally important.

Would have him back ,no problem.

I really rated him whilst here, he had an amazing manager with us who would have really looked after him had he had a downturn in form here.

Nothing average about Michael Keane.

He’s got pace, he rarely loses a header, he’s comfortable on the ball, he’s got a good range of pass, he’s got a decent record at scoring from set pieces... he has it all and I thought everyone agreed he was outstanding for us. Apparently not.

As for being an average defender, not as though that matters when you are discussing this subject, is some way from reality in my opinion. I think he's an outstanding defender.

Thought it was going to be a thread about the people's champion. Alas, it was much darker and unexpected. I hope he thrives and batters those demons if they happen to re-emerge. I cannot imagine what it must be like for a professional footballer going through poor form and mental difficulties. Keep battling Keano.

My point exactly.

Apologies, average is all relative. He certainly was a good player for us. But not as good as Tarkowski IMO. And a record signing for Everton? No.

He was excellent for us.

And wasn't it the case that he could have possibly gone and signed for those idiots down the motorway after his loan spell for them?

Let's just be thankful he was a good member of the team/squad for us and that we got a great price for him when he eventually left.

Excellent player for us. Was an England international when he left us and I would have thought still very much in Southgate's plans. Can also come up with the odd very important goal ie.Brighton and Middlesbrough come to mind. The latter being one of the most significant in our recent history.

He was eventually an excellent player for us. He had to be coached to be more aggressive particularly at set pieces. He has all the physical attributes required but he is perhaps not as aggressive as he might need to be at times. Hopefully the coaching staff will be working on that part of his game constantly. Recognising a possible weakness is one thing but to completely add another aspect such as an extra dose of aggression is sometimes an ongoing issue.

Average???? I remember an interview with Duffo, who he eventually replaced (if memory serves me), calling him a "Rolls Royce" of a defender. I respect Duffo's opinion.

Wish the lad well.

Sell Tarky for 50 mil and buy Keane back for 10M - good business that.

Given the fact he's played most of his career at centre half, why would we sign him as a right back?

We may need an upgrade at right back, but personally I'd prefer to sign a right back!
