Football Aid Turf Moor 2002

Post by Covclaret » Thu May 28, 2020 6:10 am

I was tidying through some old paperwork the other day and came across the match programme from Football Aid at Turf Moor on 30th April 2002. I know there's a couple of lads on the teamsheets who played that day, Dushanbe and Barnesy, but don't know of anyone else on the messageboard. It brought back some great memories on one of the best things I've ever had the privilege to be a part of. Can't believe it's 18 years ago!! I don't know if Football Aid is still going, basic idea was to raise money for charity and fans get the opportunity to play at your clubs ground with ex pro's, in this case Big Vince and Gerry Harrison with legends managing the teams, Willie Irvine and Andy Lochead.

Andy Lochhead always seems to get spelt incorrectly.
I bet he got p####d off with it over the years!

I spelled it 'Lochhead' to start with then noticed on the programme the different spelling and assumed I was wrong.

I spotted a good mispelling a couple of days ago in the home programme v Barnsley in 1994/95 when the Barnsley striker was listed on the team sheet as ANDY PAXTON

I played in that game Covclaret, strange to see my name there in the line-up - I still have the "Lanway" shirt, very battered now and with the sleeves cut out purely for gym use. I recall you refusing to pass to me at one point when I could have had a great chance to score and keeping the ball yourself you greedy sod :) the fact you scored anyway is immaterial  .... didn't you net two or three that day? I had never played on the Turf before so had to take the opportunity before I emigrated. Highlight for me was meeting my original hero Willie Irvine, although he was in charge of the opposition. Big Andy L. was a good laugh though, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Used to play 6 a side with Joe Birney in the gym at the Turf. 1994 Div 1 Champions and I won player of the year!

And I saved a penalty from Cov Claret in 2004 when the old site organised a game on the Turf.

I played in the game. Came over with a fellow York Claret, Lorne Hayhurst now resident in the USA and who, incidentally worked with Pete Oliver.

Two main memories. As an overlapping fullback well into his 40’s, knocking the ball past Gerry Harrison and trying to do him for pace. Vince Overton said to me “that was ambitious. He is one of the fastest players I have played with”.

Someone trying to be flash with Overson. The guy moved across to my side of the pitch and Overson said “leave him to me”. He absolutely smashed him with a sliding tackle. As Overson started to get up, he held up one on hand as is to acknowledge a mistake to the ref whilst helping the guy up with his other hand saying words to the effect of “don’t F with me again”.

Bumped into a fellow participant watching Spurs away at Wembley but suspect that I would not recognise anyone else.

Great day
