The single best header of a ball I have seen in a Burnley shirt.

Re: ARTICLE: New role for ex-Claret Gareth Taylor
I'd prefer Austin by a whisker when it was a header direct on goal but Taylor's hold up play and ability to head the ball back across goal put his all round play ahead.Lord Beamish wrote: ↑Thu May 28, 2020 11:10 amThe single best header of a ball I have seen in a Burnley shirt.
He was a star for us and without the £500,000 we got from Notts Forest we'd have been looking at administration, I believe.

I'd call him the best centre forward in the sense of the old number 9.Lord Beamish wrote: ↑Thu May 28, 2020 11:14 amAustin is the single best out and out striker I have ever seen in a Burnley shirt.
Ings was a better modern-day player- better link-up play, better dribbling, added more in defensive duties, fitter and healthier..
If Charlie had been playing in the 60s/70s I reckon he'd have been a level higher and picked up a couple of England caps.

Fetch & Andy Lochhead weren't bad at heading either.

Brilliant header of the ball, wherever he sits in the pantheon of Clarets strikers.
I'd also put Sam Vokes up there with the nut.

Re: ARTICLE: New role for ex-Claret Gareth Taylor
I’m not old enough to have seen them.
Re: ARTICLE: New role for ex-Claret Gareth Taylor
Great in the air and not too bad with his feet either.
I honestly thought we were signing a bit of a donkey with the way the City fans at work used to describe him.
Could not have been further from the truth - he was a great signing. He led the line brilliantly and was also vital in our own box from corners. I also got the impression he was a managers dream in terms of his attitude and he did seem to inspire other players around him and took on a senior player type role but not in any arrogant way.
Was gutted when we had to sell him and don’t think he wanted to leave either. Would not be surprised if he had Burnley down as one of his most enjoyable and successful periods of his career.

Sam Vokes was also excellent when we were defending corners and free kicks in the box, like having a third centre-half.

Gareth Taylor got a huge amount of stick on CM but I thought he was a good player. But then I know nowt about nowt.
Re: ARTICLE: New role for ex-Claret Gareth Taylor
He was brilliant with his head. I’m sure 80% of his goals were with his head.
I’d rate Vokes highly too in that regard but he missed 3 easy (for his standard) vs Olympiakos if I remember rightly.

Don't disagree with any of this. However on the downside he didn't half used to give some free kicks away when challenging for headers. Found this a frustrating aspect of having him up top, whether it wa this fault or the referees'...bit like watching Kevin Davies being refereed in the Portuguese women's league.TVC15 wrote: ↑Thu May 28, 2020 11:25 amGreat in the air and not too bad with his feet either.

Re: ARTICLE: New role for ex-Claret Gareth Taylor
Austin improved his all round game a lot when he was with us but his instinct for the goal made him ruthless. According to Wikipedia Taylor started as a defender so no surprise he was good defending in the box.

There is a YouTube video from Taylor's youth when he destroyed Burnley playing for Exeter or someone.

Re: ARTICLE: New role for ex-Claret Gareth Taylor
Just came across this from earlier this year: https://www.nottinghampost.com/sport/fo ... ey-4038032
Didn't realise Taylor didn't want to leave, I remember him getting that eye injury in the friendly win over Leeds then never seeing him again.. untill he scored with his FEET on that midweek game for Forest, which left me annoyed. But like he says in the full article you never know what's going on behind the scenes. Also another player who Burnley left their mark on
But Taylor, who now works as academy manager at Manchester City, still holds Burnley close to his heart, and explains how he did not want to leave the club to sign for Forest.
"I wanted to stay, I didn't want any more money, my contract was up the following year, and I said, 'look, just extend it by a year',
"I was coming up for 31/32 at the time, I'd had a couple of good seasons, but Stan actually said they had to sell me.
"I was desperate to stay and Stan was desperate to keep me, but in the end Forest came in with a big offer of about half a million, which was good money at that stage."
Taylor continued: "I said to Stan (Ternent), 'I don't want to go gaffer', but he said 'we're in so much trouble, we need the money'.
"I thought 'I'm not stitching the club up', and I left.
"I think my first game, after a mini pre-season with Forest, Paul Hart threw me in at the Turf.
"I was so nervous, I couldn't believe it, I felt like a loyalty to the club, but they might not have known I left to help the club, and myself, but the reception I got when they read my name out, incredible.
"My dad was at the game and he was almost in tears. It made me feel eight feet tall.
"I made the mistake of scoring five minutes from time, but I didn't celebrate - I never would."

For those of a certain age I don't think there is any doubt just how good Willie Irvine was. Bettered only by Jimmy Greaves is a comment I have heard on more than one occasion and given his record, that is praise indeed. Those of us who were not born when he was playing cannot compare and the best 2 out and out strikers in my time are Austin and Payton.

Willie Irvine for me, he and Andy Lochhead were a right handful for teams until Goodison '67

Yes I think he revealed his identity when Gareth had been taken to hospital following an injury. Gareth scored a belter of a goal v Wolves end of 2002 at the Turf in front of the CF stand.

He did.
It was made into a limited edition print to celebrate 120yrs of the club, which I have in my “Burnley room” (aka the downstairs toilet )

Yep it was a tough game but City's quality shone through in ET, Gareth isn't satisfied though and wants more success, that's not a bad trait to have as a manager https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/54774073
Re: ARTICLE: New role for ex-Claret Gareth Taylor
Moore and Taylor, especially in the first half of 01/02 were the classic, very effective, little and large partnership. One of my favourite periods as a Burnley fan.

Gareth Taylor's Man City won 2-1 in Sweden earlier, to set them up to gain a place in the last 16 of Women's Champions League. Return leg next week.

Gareth's Man City are coasting into the last 8 of the WCL, 4-0 ahead in the away leg, and 7-0 up on aggregate.
They will join Chelsea in tomorrow's draw, so 2 English teams in the last 8, that's not bad is it.

Re: ARTICLE: New role for ex-Claret Gareth Taylor
Excellent with his head but not so good with his feet but a good player for us. Never seemed to score with his feet for us especially outside of the box so what does he do on his Forest debut? Fire a shot in the net from outside the box. Great pro.
