Wembley twice on this day

Post by ClaretTony » Fri May 29, 2020 8:29 am

Not once but twice we've played at Wembley on this day

1988: Sherpa Van Final v Wolves

1994: Play Off Final v Stockport

I wrote this piece last year on the 25th anniversary of the play off win

Don't think they thought Burnley.were their rivals.but like Stoke a few years before.the two sets of fans.just didn't like each other.and Stockport fans still now 25 years plus .still dislike both clubs

Both had a superiority complex, that's why it was sweet to send both packing in the play-offs.

Staggering to imagine it wasn't that long ago Stockport were a mid-table Championship side, now they're scrambling around in non-league footy.

Plymouth haven't fared much better after a good spell in the Championship they're still trying to scramble out of League 2.

This highlights how rapid our rise has been and how rapid their descents have been.

It's also a pertinent warning that success isn't set in stone, and we'll have to keep working to maintain our current lofty heights.

Just looking at the team for the Sherpa Van Final

Ray Deakin, Ian Britton and Paul Comstive for us and Mark Kendall in goal for Wolves - all four of them now passed away.

I never knew that Les Thompson was offered another deal. Wonder why he turned it down and dropped so many leagues? Don't remember him as being the best defender but sure he could have still done a job in the football league

He was outstanding at getting opposition players sent off

A proper wind up merchant. I cant remember how many were sent off for tangling with him. Caskey for Spurs and the Stockport player in the play offs for starters. Les is nowadays fitter than he was when he was a player (his words) and is a regular competitor in tri-Athlons. A few years back a team from the Turf did a cycle ride the length of the country. After a full day in the saddle and over 100 miles covered, most of the cyclists collapsed into a bath to ease their aching muscles. Thommo put on his running shoes and did 6-7 miles before dinner.
