Re: ARTICLE: Two former Clarets released by Football League clubs
Been reading this morning, he had an outstanding season for Lincoln in League Two, started this season well but has come back in and given goals away with some really bad mistakes which has left him out of favour with manager and fans.claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Fri May 29, 2020 11:31 amPuzzling how Shackells career and form nose dived once he left
Re: ARTICLE: Two former Clarets released by Football League clubs
Shackell might have been released simply because he was on too much money. Wasn't he captain at Lincoln?

When he went to Milwall I thought they had made a good signing but always seemed to be a sub there as well. Maybe his return with Derby that night finished him off.ClaretTony wrote: ↑Fri May 29, 2020 11:44 amBeen reading this morning, he had an outstanding season for Lincoln in League Two, started this season well but has come back in and given goals away with some really bad mistakes which has left him out of favour with manager and fans.

Re: ARTICLE: Two former Clarets released by Football League clubs
As per the article, he got a bad injury at Derby in his second season back and never played a league game for them again. Went to Millwall on loan for a short time and didn't get a start. Then went to Lincoln and all was well until the change of manager, an injury, a couple of mistakes and manager singling him out for criticism.claretonthecoast1882 wrote: ↑Fri May 29, 2020 11:46 amWhen he went to Milwall I thought they had made a good signing but always seemed to be a sub there as well. Shackell might regret leaving the Turf when he did, but
apparently not a dressing room favourite.
Still, I'll always have a soft spot for any ex-Claret who scores against the Undead.

Shackell has had a very successful career, 500 appearances is not to be sneezed at and he turned in some excellent performances for us, a good leader too.

Know he isn't the most popular, but I thought Shackell was an outstanding player for us. We did good business on him too. 3 good years of service and about a £2 million profit wasn't it?

A very good signing by Howe who persevered and got him at a good point of his career. He vastly improved our defence, and had a good year for us in the PL. He disgraced himself by getting greedy, so I suspect no great love for him now

He didn’t help himself by downing tools during the pre-season but he’d been a very good player for us.

Re. Shackell:
Fair to say he annoyed - I'm being polite - us all with his antics. And I think all, or most of us, adored his return to TM with Derby.
But although I won't ever like the man it seems only fair to provide some balance, as indeed others have done above:
i) he did play well for us most of the time from 2013 onwards;
ii) he scored one of the most historic (and meaningful) goals in our recent history;
iii) you don't play professional football until the age of 36 unless you conduct yourself in the right manner in terms of training and lifestyle.

Would imagine that’s your lot for Shacks. A very good left sided centre back who proved to be one of the best in the Championship, a little bit obsessed by what people thought of him by all accounts.

As already mentioned I thought he was a good leader. Played some very good games for us with the odd goal thrown in for good measure. 500 games is a career he can look back on with satisfaction.

No doubt he’ll look back and probably regret the way his career with us ended while at the same thinking some of the best football in his career was here. A great leader and defender.

You never know what to really believe but some of the rumours going around about his wages at Derby were ridiculous.
Shame the way he left us as he’d been excellent for the most part but we didn’t really miss him at all when he went.

Re: ARTICLE: Two former Clarets released by Football League clubs
Thought he was absolutely outstanding in the promotion season and then the PL season. So consistent.
His departure really did sour things though. I seem to remember Darren Bentley making a really derogatory comment about how happier the dressing room was when he'd left.

Re: ARTICLE: Two former Clarets released by Football League clubs
I don’t know about his wages but you can only assume that they were considerably higher than what he’d have got here. What is known is that he wasn’t popular in the dressing room and that he refused to play in the pre season.Bordeauxclaret wrote: ↑Fri May 29, 2020 7:35 pmYou never know what to really believe but some of the rumours going around about his wages at Derby were ridiculous.

But on the pitch he was excellent for us.

You’ve said he wasn’t popular for a while however I’ve been told that wasn’t the case.
Extremely hard to believe that Dyche would choose someone unpopular as captain for one of our most successful seasons.

Nuke
Juke and Barnesy’s reaction on the comms cam provided some evidence for how he was regarded amongst the squad.

Re: ARTICLE: Two former Clarets released by Football League clubs
He was captain when Dyche came in. If you recall there was a tweet from the club’s media manager at the time he left saying it would now be a happier dressing room. I’ve been told by quite a few that he was very aloof and he wouldn’t do appearances or interviews.Bordeauxclaret wrote: ↑Fri May 29, 2020 7:42 pmYou’ve said he wasn’t popular for a while however I’ve been told that wasn’t the case.

I always remember Barnes and Juke on the commentary at the game on the Turf where Shackell and Keogh had their fantastic contest to see who could make most mistakes in the same game. Think their reaction was an indicator as to how he was viewed in the dressing room.

And for two years after that.
Very odd for him to keep an unpopular captain and also for that captain to spend so much time with other players away from football.
Anyway, as I said we didn’t miss him when he left.
