Uplifting story. Good on him and the folk who organised it for him.

I actually sent him the medal on behalf of Lancashire Schools' Football Association ! John won the Keighley Cup in 1946 but did not receive a medal.
Charlie Briggs contacted me and I sent him a modern day Lancashire Schools' Football Association gold medal which we present to Lancashire Cup Winners. We also suggested that My Zelly could be invited to attend the next final of the Keighley Cup whenever that may be....

What a heat-warming article. The perfect tonic.

Congratulations to all involved in making this happen.

The Keighley Cup is actually a competition organised by Burnley Schools' Football Association and the Cup Final is usually played at turf Moor.
There were probably no medals awarded for the Keighley Cup so soon after the war.
Although not an actual Keighley Cup Medal, Mr. Zelly seems to be happy to have received a Lancashire Schools' Football Association Medal.
We award gold medals to all winners of LSFA Competitions and silver medals to finalists.

I think my Grandad played in the final of the same competition just before the war ( and lost !) I remember him saying they played across the width of Turf Moor rather than the full pitch.

You’re not the only one Chester. Exactly the same, to the point I think we might have played in the same very successful 1993/4 team.

Memories flooding back today, with news of Mick Fletcher passing and School cup finals...

My husband, Derek Allan, also played in that game!! He will be 88 in August, and at the time that the match was played he was at Hestbank. He had to come home on the bus to play. Derek is now partially sighted and heard the article on The Talking Newspaper. On the photo Derek is 6th in from the left. He did not get his medal either, which he has spoken of many times.

highling.fling: I can send you the same medal as the one received by John if Derek would like one i.e. the present day medal awarded to the winners of Lancashire Schools' Football Association Open Cup Competitions.
