D - after another think, it's more likely to be 'buzzard' ('ard' being three of the four letters of 'road')

And I agree with lakedistrict about 'buttercup'!

There's a typo in B. Beagle should be Beadle, and the answer is Bumblebee, a reference to Oliver Twist.

Sorry, you're wrong..

A beagle is a dog.

A beadle was a parish officer with the power to punish minor offenders, which is what Mr. Bumble was.

Mr Bumble is the character who uttered one of my favourite Dickensian phrases :- " if the law thinks that, the law is a ass, a idiot ".

Can't recall if that clue was in the Daily Mail or Express circa 79/80 ish. A colleagues paper, anyway.

It is so long ago I am not sure, but I think that was all there was.
I think it was in the Sunday Express skelton xword which I tried to do most weeks for a couple of years
and rarely finished it and even more so correctly.

Much better with four letter word answers

The answers both start with C‬

‪The answer is either an insect, wild flower, mushroom, tree or bird.‬

‪Clue 1: Move forward very slowly after the corn husk.

Clue 2: Maybe a Brazil box but back to front.
