Phil Bardsley and Aaron Lennon

Post by Spijed » Sun May 31, 2020 7:11 pm

Are both players definitely leaving at the end of the season or are there any discussions going on regarding new contracts?

Not sure, but both maybe given 1 year extension due to the uncertainty around OOC players post June 30th.

I'd like a new direction, and thought this summer may have been the one we were proactive in, in preparing the transition.

Think covid will hamper that and will be used as a reason, so looks like it'll be window number x where we have been left with a feeling of meh regards the first 11 being strengthened, but it's worked so far so who are we to suggest otherwise.

In the current climate I think it would be wise to try and keep hold of all of our playing squad. In the case of Bardsley and Lennon that would be offering a 1 year extension.

There could be some bargains out there available at lower rates but Bardsley is defo worth a deal. Lennon is fine but a fit JBG will get the shirt so a future prospect might be worth a gamble.

J'agree with the above. Certainly Bardsley will be potentially a starter depending on other options, and win the circumstances Lennon would be a good sub should he accept a suitable offer

Big fan of Bardsley-never lets you down. Lacks that yard of pace but I believe he is an inspiration to the team and is usually seen talking to those around him. Not sure about Lennon-formidable in his day, but how many minutes has he played this season. We have McNeil, Brady, JBG, Hendrick if he stays and Brownhill who could probably play wide right. You could even play Jay as a wide man supporting the lone striker. Can save ourselves a wage here, and suspect a sizeable one too

Yes i'd tend to agree Bardsley's been a steady eddie, now i know they're not appreciated on here but every successful team needs a solid base.

I'd happily give him a 1 year extension.

Lennon i'm less fussed about and even accounting for Brady and JBG being in the treatment room more than on the pitch,we're still well catered for on the right.

So if we can free up wages to put towards other signings or just to lower our wage bill if required then i'd happily let Lennon go.

Bardsley has been great for us, held down a spot in the starting 11 so worth an extension (if he wants it, of course)
It's impossible to say the same for Lennon who has been a bit-part player.

If we are signing no replacement, then Phil Bardsley is a must!

I’d definitely keep Bardsley

Lennon I’m not so sure.
We’ve obviously not seen much of him, but he does give the pace and unless I’m mistaken, is our only “naturally right footed winger”
If we can find a replacement in current climate then he’ll be gone but if not, another year

Bardsley is a “must keep”.

I think Lennon offers pace and trickery off the bench, as well as being experienced at this level. I’d keep unless we have a replacement lined up and is a “must keep” if we lose Jeff.

Thought Lennon was much more confident in his last sub appearance and I thought it might have been the first time he didn’t have a slight ‘niggle’. If there is a more confident Lennon than we have seen so far, we might be in for a treat. Or it might just be me seeing something that isn’t there.

Big decisions on both sides I would imagine, be difficult to leave and get new clubs but not impossible for the payers, can the club get alternatives who would be better, don't see that as being easy either. So would agree on keeping at least Bardsley but no issue if it was both of them.

The way our players react when we score I don't want to see the back of any of them. Lennon is a new man at Burnley and a real asset defensively even if he's just used to protect a result.

I would never have thought the same Lennon in his spurs days would cover and give the sheer work rate he does for us now.

Yes he's not quite as dangerous now as he was years back in attack but his work rate is incredible... He's like having Boyd or Arfield with a burst of pace.

I'd keep Bardsley but get rid of Lennon. But I suspect, as we've done with Brady, is give them both another year. It's cheaper than replacing them with new blood.

On a pure football level, I would release both, father time is not kind, on a financial level we may have to keep both

It's fine releasing both, but then we'll have to find replacements, that might not be easy, plus you have to factor into our finances any potential signing-on fees, agent fees etc. In addition to just the transfer fees we'd have to fork out.

The more time moves on without much certainty the more I think extending Bardo's contract is a must and close to thinking Aaron's is too. Just my opinion, mind.

That's good to hear. If it's in the Mail then the likelihood is that the opposite is true :)

Cant see that being true.

But anyone who is unhappy needs to get real. Be it manager, players themselves, fans or anyone else.

it's in the Burnley Express as well. Primarily centres on the fact that both Bardsley and Hendrick have not been offered new contracts as of yet.

The Mail article includes this stupendously informative sentence : -
"Burnley are committed to finishing the season, despite the complication of having a number of players out of contract".

Phew...I was worried we might pack it in 4 games after the restart !
