Broadband options

Post by Foulthrow » Mon Jun 01, 2020 12:28 pm

I was hoping for some help on broadband options. My contract with Virgin Media is up. The price had crept up bit by bit so I was hoping for a reduction on the £32 I was paying.

I’ve danced this particular dance on a few occasions now and I’ve always found they offer a decent discount when I play the cancellation card. However, all they offered was a discount of a pound. So I did cancel and I’m now on 30 days notice.

The problem is - which I’ve obviously not told Virgin - I don’t have a BT telephone line.

Does anyone know what I could do to get the internet now? Is 4g on an unlimited plan a reasonable option?

Thanks in advance for any help ! :)

4g may be an option depending on what you do.

But there are always fair usage policies and then it depends also on what type of services you are trying to access.

If you are just browsing and emails maybe. But if you are trying to stream movies and download large files possibly not. Best checking what if any usage cap there is.

Also if you have multiple people trying to use it or connecting xboxes etc some services might even be restricted from running over 4g.

5g will probably address most of these issues if you can get 5g and a good package.

Depending on your package, speed and usage.

Is 32 pound a month that much?

Virgin media doubled all speeds recently for customers.

Seems a lot to me when you can shop around and get it for at least a tenner less.

I suppose I should add that I hate, absolutely hate, paying over the odds for anything.

You generally get what you pay for.

Always buy the best products at low prices. I'm sure they will offer you something a little cheaper or try and get a new router out of them.

I've always had Virgin but a couple of ex girlfriends had the plug in internet with phonelines and I wouldn't have one given for free.

Fibre optics are supposed to be decent but then you would be paying at least the same.

Depends what speed you require. BT at half the speed you have now (assuming your on Virgins slowest offering) is £32 a month.

It would all be dependent on what you do at home, as mentioned above, for myself working majority of my time at home, even before lockdown, I need good quick internet and currently pay Virgin around £60 a month for 300mbps however I have friends who only use internet to stream, consoles etc and they get by on 100mbps for around £20 a month on Virgin.

Virgin is the best on the market, better to pay an extra £5 or £10 a month and get a service that is 99.99% faultless.

I’d be more than happy to pay £20 a month but I can’t get it for less than £31

I'm with TalkTalk and get 25Mbps as I live in an area where Virgin Media don't offer.

But that speed is generally fine for me. I work with and connect to VPS that have 1Gbps connections, and that's where I need the good connection speed.

Still - I pay £25, so can probably get better. The connection rarely goes down though which is just as important as speed.
