ARTICLE: Ten Burnley defeats that really hurt
Re: ARTICLE: Ten Burnley defeats that really hurt
Two cup games would be in there for me. The 2-3 defeat to Darlington at the Riverside when we had been 2-0 up against a lower league side, and the Auto Windscreens semi final defeat to Grimsby when we'd got a decent draw away in the first leg. It looked like we'd be heading to Wembley in the middle of an awful season.
Re: ARTICLE: Ten Burnley defeats that really hurt
Being a Whitworth lad any defeat to Rochdale was always bad, but the one against nine men with our keeper on loan

Torquay Utd in the play offs was grim and more recently Lincoln City in the cup was a really tough pill to swallow
Any defeat to Sheffield Wed has always been a bad day as I work with a number of Owls

Re: ARTICLE: Ten Burnley defeats that really hurt
Surprised no-one's mentioned the Telford 3-0 FA Cup debacle, that day really brought home who low we'd sunk.
Burton in the LC still rankles, we'd been given a bye to the 3rd rd, due to our European campaign, and threw away a 1-0 HT lead, the night Heats had a shocker, what made it worse was they got a couple of favourable draws against Forest and Boro in the following rounds, and ended up making the semi's, mind you they then got trounced by City, so we were spared that ignominy at least.
Leicester home games already been mentioned, that minute of madness when we missed the pen, and they went up the park and scored.
Palace home game from a few years back we were 2 up and cruising, and then collapsed in the 2nd half to lose 3-2.
Couple from our 1st Prem season, Rovers at home, and Wigan away spring to mind , those ultimately proved decisive in determining our fate.
Back in the day any reverse to Stockport always stung
Luton 88? narrow loss in the LC or whatever is was called then, we got a creditable 1-1 draw on their plastic pitch, and more than matched them in the return, but we put through our own net early in the 2nd half, and couldn't get back into it, they were a big fish at the time, and the holders as well. that would have been a helluva scalp.
And the numerous late raggy Arsenal goals against us in recent seasons, we finally stopped that run of defeats this term anyway.
I'm sure there's many more but i can't recall them off the top of my head.

I've mentioned this one before on here, never got over Oghani's disallowed goal at the Turf.tiger76 wrote: ↑Wed Jun 03, 2020 2:40 pmLuton 88? narrow loss in the LC or whatever is was called then, we got a creditable 1-1 draw on their plastic pitch, and more than matched them in the return, but we put through our own net early in the 2nd half, and couldn't get back into it, they were a big fish at the time, and the holders as well. that would have been a helluva scalp.

OH! for VAR 30 years ago i could be imagining it, but i'm sure we hit the post, and had an effort cleared off the line that night, it clearly wasn't meant to be.NottsClaret wrote: ↑Wed Jun 03, 2020 3:04 pmI've mentioned this one before on here, never got over Oghani's disallowed goal at the Turf.
Just Googled they were indeed the holders after beating Arsenal the previous year, and after that scare they went all the way to the final, before losing to Forest. In those days they were a top side.

Yes, they had a few top half finishes in the 1st division and some good cup runs. We definitely should have won that though, as a mediocre 4th Division side too. I was right behind that 'goal' in the Bee Hole end, if you fancy seeing it again..tiger76 wrote: ↑Wed Jun 03, 2020 3:19 pmOH! for VAR 30 years ago i could be imagining it, but i'm sure we hit the post, and had an effort cleared off the line that night, it clearly wasn't meant to be.

Don't remember the home tie but I do the away one at Luton. Car full, pulled off at the M1 Luton junction and we all piled into the first pub we came across. The boozer car park was full of hire vans and the pub ramned with clarets. We all sang and danced for a good few hours before we made our way down to Kenilworth Road.NottsClaret wrote: ↑Wed Jun 03, 2020 3:48 pmYes, they had a few top half finishes in the 1st division and some good cup runs. The 0-5 defeat at Carlisle in the auto glass under Mullen was awful. I knew by then that Jimmy had over stayed his welcome

Quite possibly been trying to forget the bad old days.Herts Clarets wrote: ↑Wed Jun 03, 2020 3:39 pmWeren't they 2 different matches? Dave Williams was on loan the 1991/2 season - sure the 9 men defeat was earlier than that....
Like said though any defeat to the Dale was unbearable.

The home defeat to Rovers under Stan was painful to add to the abject away performance mentioned above. Crazy atmosphere.

TBF we were doing OK in the home game, before Bally had his moment of madness, it was only 1-0 at that stage.Steve-Harpers-perm wrote: ↑Wed Jun 03, 2020 4:36 pmThe home defeat to Rovers under Stan was painful to add to the abject away performance mentioned above. Crazy atmosphere.
The atmosphere sounded fierce even watching on TV, but it was the 1st league meeting in 17 years, so i guess there was a lot of pent up aggression.
Makes our recent successes all the sweeter though.

You would indeed. I can't remember why neither were in the team in the first place, but we did look bloody good against Fulham.matttheclaret wrote: ↑Wed Jun 03, 2020 2:43 pmHe did. That said, I think you'd be hard pushed to find many fans who were happy with that team news when they rocked up at Vicarage Road

Certainly agree with Wimbledon and Watford and to be honest the worst I felt immediately post game was the League Cup Spurs semi final.
But one other which has stuck in my mind is loosing to Sunderland in 1978 against 9 men at home I can see me on a deserted Longside still shaking my head at was happening .

I seem to recall a cup game away at Anfield......Inchy in charge? Lost and barely went over the half way line........said that was the tactic just to keep the score down.....?

Seem to remember Little being brought on very late on and he proceeded to cause Phil Babb a lot of trouble but as you say it was too little too late.Jimmymaccer wrote: ↑Wed Jun 03, 2020 11:05 pmI seem to recall a cup game away at Anfield......Inchy in charge? We had a run of poor cup games vs Liverpool around then

Another that springs to my mind was a 1-3 midweek replay at home to Chelsea in the cup in 1970? after extra time to boot. A superb draw in the first game and all set up for a win at home but it wasn't to be. I think that was the year they won the replayed final at Old Trafford

That was just a dreadful waste of getting through. Difficult game it may have been but we made no attempt to compete.Jimmymaccer wrote: ↑Wed Jun 03, 2020 11:05 pmI seem to recall a cup game away at Anfield......Inchy in charge? The awful thing about Telford was that the result really wasn't a surprise. I would nominate Crewe as the worst of the 10 in the article.....one of my worst other memories (and there are many) was the 4 goal stuffing at Sealand Road.tiger76 wrote: ↑Wed Jun 03, 2020 2:40 pmSurprised no-one's mentioned the Telford 3-0 FA Cup debacle, that day really brought home who low we'd sunk.

Was in a pub in Newcastle before our game this season when in walked Malcolm Macdonald
He was doing a question and answer. not many seemed to know this as their was as many clarets as Geordies in there
After he had finished he was having pics taken with anyone who wanted a pic with him
My mate had his pic taken and Malcolm said I hope you enjoy the game
My friend said you do realise theirs as many clarets as Geordies in here and we still haven't forgiven you for the semi final
He then said Newcastle were played off the park that day and lucky to get through.. was very complimentary to us clarets in there.

Telford was my second ever game.
It's just unthinkable that we could be that bad these days.
Re: ARTICLE: Ten Burnley defeats that really hurt
Hillsborough 74' was the worst for me. It haunted me for weeks that experience. I can still hear the deafening "Howay the lads" and wonder how we lost that game after the form we had been in. The football special trains that left Burnley Central that were ceremoniously smashed up on the way back, with the communication cord pulled a dozen times. Red Rum winning the National. The packed Leppings Lane end crammed full of swaying Burnley fans. John Wroe and I had tickets for the Kop end with all the Geordies so had to keep schtum most of it. Nulty's header. Terry Hibbit, Supermac. The end. Getting back for Last orders in The Hop. Stunned silence. Never felt so dejected after a football game as that and Ive been to most on Dave's list.
