BBC overkill ....

Post by Clarets4me » Wed Jun 03, 2020 1:47 pm

BBC 5Live has covered virtually no other story other than the " George Floyd " death for nearly 3 days now, it's an example how a very few individuals can set the agenda ....
The 1.30pm Sports news consisted only of sports people reactions to the story, oh, and 3 West Indies players won't travel to the UK, in fear of Covid19 !

The incident was horrifying and dreadful, but it's getting ridiculous now ....

But the protests continue so of course they continue to report it.

Some might say it makes a change from their usual coverage of Covid19

The US is on the verge of civil war, in the midst of a global pandemic. I think it’s a fairly significant event.

Seems to be popular with the followers of The Core twitter account which says it all. If you're worried about brainwashing you probably need to look closer to home and seek some help

I'm a big advocate of the BBC but yes, have to agree with the OP, this morning's Radio 5 was overkill.....agree I could have turned over/off but I was working and actually developed a grim fascination for just how hard and long they were going to carry on banging the drum. It bothers me a bit because the cause is obviously a just one but this kind of saturation wokeness just seems to run the risk of turning people off.

I've usually got Absolute Classic Rock on during the day now, the news coverage is growing wearisome. I used to listen to 5Live a lot, but their negativity became grating.

R4 Extra is worth a listen sometimes, at least you'll get some comedy & drama to break the monotony of the doom & gloom, which the media persist in feeding us.

My radio listening is a bit R6, R5, R4, R4 Extra and the World Service. I've tried Talk Radio and LBC, but I find them amateur in comparison.

So thinking the police shouldn’t murder innocent citizens in the street is being ‘woke’ now is it?

Latest lie from the BBC that this May was the hottest ever.

It was the 48th hottest May. Don't they check their facts or do they have their own agenda?

Climate change: May was sunniest calendar month on record in UK
By Roger Harrabin
BBC environment analyst 1st June 2020

Also the BBC are forecasting rain for next two weeks but never mention it in their article.

The answer to why the BBC aren’t lying is in your own post.

5 Lives fine as long as there's sport to broadcast, but there ain't any sport so i don't want to listen to covid chat or hear about the drama in America hour after hour.

Hopefully once the cricket, football et al get going again, they'll cut back on all the chit-chat and broadcast the live events, that's their main remit after all.

Didn't the BBC say this Spring (March-June) had the most hours of sunshine since records began in 1929, not that it was the hottest May on record?

It was both spring and the month of May itself being the sunniest on record (as it says in the original post). Quite how that equates to lying because there have been hotter Mays I don’t know. And the story came from the Met Office and the BBC reported it, so if lying had been happening it wouldn’t have been the BBC anyway.

That bore Clara Amfo couldn’t present her radio 1 show yesterday because of how upset she’s been, apparently.

There aren't many "standard" news stories right now. Hence, the focus on anything "non-Covid". It's the same here in France. And probably everywhere. I'm sure the Russian and Chinese media are following it 24/7.

They can broadcast fart sounds 24 hours a day for all I care because I don’t listen to it, I couldn’t think of anything more depressing than listening to the news constantly.

I just thought it was reasonable for a news station to be discussing an enormous cultural event that has global significance.

Absolutely not and, as I said in my post, I am generally a big fan of the beeb and it's merits definitely vastly, vastly outstrip it's faults. However the OP was about the sheer wall-to-wall saturation of the coverage with interviewee after interviewee relating their experiences of racism until it was becoming brow-beating and , imho, at risk of turning the audience off an important cause.Perhaps I shouldn't have invoked the dread woke word but it's something I do associate with Radio 5's daytime content, particularly Nihal Arthanayika in the afternoons who is the absolute definition of it and this did feel like "milking" a theme to death.

He absolutely and very clearly did NOT say that and your post is as clear an example as you'll find of people on here deliberately and obviously picking an argument by deliberately mis interpreting what someone has written for their own (argumentative) agenda. It epitomises everything which has become wrong with this board and shows you up to be clearly looking for ...well..an argument for whatever reason. Sadly.

So put me right then, what is ‘saturation wokeness’ when it comes to murder on the street?

This is ridiculous.
If anybody's happy or even ambivalent over Floyd being killed in the way he was , I pity them, I really do.
If anybody finds the news coverage too much then remember the news is aimed not just at you but also at many thousands of other people not all of whom will have seen or heard it for a few hours or even more.
If you're getting tired of it, switch off but for God's sake, don't trivialise an issue as serious and, potentially, far-reaching as this.

I've always thought of 5 Live as BBC Radio's equivalent to The Sun newspaper.

I suggest that " TalkSport " has that particular radio mantle at present, " 5Live " has been " Radio Guardian " for some time .....
