Anyone on furlough, how long have you been on it and have you any idea of a return to work date.

Week 10 for me

Been in regular contact with my boss for the last 3 weeks and no sign of production getting up to the numbers needed to have a full team in.

My boss is approaching with caution, repeatedly tells me he could bring me back but on 2-3 days work when the Furlough pays 4 but if the 3 days were to dry up I'd have to be laid off. Tough times ahead me thinks.

Went back on full time hours on may 12th. There's nowhere near a full factory back in though.

Furloughed since the scheme began but go back to work Monday, literally the biggest 12 months of my working career coming up, intending to do all I can to save the business whilst being on 50% of my usual earnings. Theres around 45 work at my business but only 5 of us in Sales so ultimately we need to sell to keep all our friends in a job. Cracking company and we wont go down without a fight, I'm convinced we can come out of this in a great position.

Sales... Our product portfolio is aimed at Industrial Metrology, we have engineering and design services, contract measurement, Lean Enterprise and Inspection Software all mainly within the Engineering sector.
Our main sectors are Aerospace, Automotive and Medical but we supply just about any inspection tool you can imagine so we need to be as diverse as possible. Anything that is manufactured needs inspecting and with our main drive being Industry 4.0 and automation we are in a good position in that respect. Sales is all about showing value to your customer, If I can save you 200k a year by investing 100k in automating a process then it becomes a little easier for these companies to get justification. Time will tell I suppose....

Think the October finish is just to smooth the transition - the requirement for employers to contribute from August onwards is pretty much a signal that employees should be looking to be called back.

Lucky enough not to be furloughed, though it hasn't been easy trying to balance everything. Feel for those whose futures are uncertain - hopefully employers are at least up front with you about the challenges faced.

I’ve been furloughed since middle of March. I am a drayman delivering barrels of beer to pubs and micro pubs. Due to how pubs may trade when they eventually open again I am fearful for my job. I think we could be looking at over a million people dumped onto the dole by October.

I agree. This will be the main rise in redundancies. Companies won't want to contribute to NI payments if the jobs aren't going to be there in October. And then there's the zombie companies who were close to going under before the lockdown began.

1 week enforced holiday 1 stint of 3 weeks furlough, 1 week back at work (home working) then another 3 weeks furlough , just on 2nd week back at work (home) then start another 3 weeks furlough on Monday. I suspect when the part-time option comes in (July) it will be 2 days per week and gradually increase the days as the work returns. After October who knows what will happen

It's going to depend on the industry they're in I suppose.

Mechanics on furlough where I live won't find another mechanics job because we were/are all struggling through this and many won't be able to switch to a different career.
I was lucky because my workshop stayed open throughout everything, work was slow but steady and is picking up again, whereas a couple of garages that closed down temporarily are having to build up their work schedules again from scratch and are keeping some lads on furlough until such time there is enough work to justify bringing them back in.

Social distancing is also something being taken into consideration by some garages.

people can always get 2 jobs if they want the lifestyle they were used to. otherwise, cut back on spending, automate your savings and stop using credit cards. like I have said they are thousands of jobs out there. if they really want it they should be fine.

I've been assured by the directors where I work that our jobs are not at risk, unfortunately I am still pessimistic about my future.

I think when some places are managing to function at less than half capacity, full capacity won't be a necessity until the economy and subsequently business returns to the levels we were at last year.

I am in that place where I love my role, company and everything about the job myself. But fortunately like you I have been assured everything is good with my role within the company. Ive always tried to keep ahead of things anyway with training, self development etc and would encourage anyone on furlough (or otherwise to seriously consider doing something like that).

Its going to be tough for all businesses over the coming months / couple of years. But to those furloughed don't allow this to be an excuse for businesses to treat you like crap.

We have all gotten used to a certain job or certain wage. But we all might have to readjust our expectations. Whether that's he the type of job we do. The money we earn or both. What we did doesn't mean its what we will always do. Although its harder in a certain profession. Everyone can reinvent themselves and we all have transferrable skills. A lad at our place left his career as a PE teacher to start at the bottom in the call centre at our IT / Telco firm as he wanted to work in this industry. He is already making great steps to forge a brilliant career with us and beyond. Someone I worked with before did the reverse. Did a brilliant job in the office but left to pursue a career as a fireman.

Luckily with so much more homeworking (granted that's not possible for all). Many will have a much better work life balance anyway. Which is worth more than money. Right now I don't have any M6 traffic jams. Not eating junk food from service stations. Am seeing my family first thing, last thing and through the day.

With expensive holidays, pubs and meals out and various other activities off the menu for now that should be another way people can save a bit / realign their short term expectations.

People will have to adjust though. To an extent the ease of access to things was probably never sustainable anyway. 18 year olds with brand new Mercs on PCP or every household with 2+ cars and mortgaged to the max etc might have to change. Expectations may have to change. And people need to live more within their means.

As a kid in the 90's we were lucky if we had one car. We had one TV, went on one UK Holiday a year. Didn't have one house phone never mind everyone in the house having at least one mobile. And life was brilliant!

Not saying people shouldn't be aspirational and want good things. Everyone loves a nice car, nice house etc. But none of these things ultimately lead to true happiness anyway.

But even for those who have to cut back a lot. The fact we have smart TV's, the internet etc means we have far more than any generation ever did and most countries still do.

Use the internet to learn. Upskill yourself. Prepare for your next move.

I can really relate to almost all of that, who knows what normal will be in 6-24 months. Its just time to knuckle down and not play the victim card like I have in the past and blame outside distraction. If you're a hard worker you will always get by, maybe not with the luxuries you have been used to and it certainly wont be easy but what choice do we have!
I'm prepared for 12+ hour days, sat at my desk, hammering the phone and Teams meetings (at home) but in truth I often worked 12 hour days anyway but just spend 5-6 hours in my car travelling around the North of England and Wales.
I really hope all those that lose their jobs find something that pays the bills until their old job roles become available again.

I have been very fortunate in that I work for Hertfordshire County Council, managing the transport operation for school deliveries. Once the schools closed, we had a number of meetings about options available to keep our staff gainfully employed until the schools plan to reopen. None of it was necessary, as the centre was transformed into a food parcel production line, to deliver parcels of food to vulnerable residents and the local foodbanks. School supplies have run parallel with the food distribution, with the food side dominating the volumes moved through the site. I have worked every Bank Holiday and several Sundays to support 7 day delivery - something that is not required when delivering to schools. Although I am salaried and not entitled to be paid for working additional hours, with the work put in exceeding what could be classed as reasonable, one off payments are authorized for those of us who are putting in the hours and the work.

As many schools are opening to more pupils and we head into our peak sales period for the year (June, July and September) the challenges have increased and as I understand it, the 12 week isolation period advised runs to the end of June. All signs are that the provision of food parcels will either reduce significantly or stop altogether by then.

my son is IT regarding Cloud and the company support the Gov. which is what my son was doing, didn't expect him to be put on furlough but 4 weeks ago he was. Told it will be 1st July in regard to return but he is sceptical as I can imagine most will be, I expect unemployment to rise dramatically in July and then again in Oct, if everything stays the same, however hopeful for further stimulus for the UK economy.

Exactly. Most days I was travelling. even if I went into the office it was a 7am start and a 7pm return. I didn't HAVE to go in the office. And tbh I actually don't mind the driving. Especially when im working away. But I definitely have a better balance right now with permanent homeworking. I do want to go back to being in the office and in front of customers but wont be the same level as before.

I’ve been on 80% hours (Fridays off) for the past three weeks, as our manufacturing and engineering shop floor have been on furlough.

I and then rest of my R&D team have still been working all week regardless to keep our projects on track, even though we’re advised not too.

Received an email today to say we are back to full pay and full hours from Monday 8th, as we’ve built up enough orders to continue our production lines.

We’ve certainly grown more as a team working from home, communication is much better. I am looking forward to getting back to the office though.
