Very Sad with the jobs losses at Safran as well.

Must admit I feared and still do for RR Barlick, great facility with some talented engineers

Are these job cuts because the company is broke or to please shareholders? Covid-19 is a great boon for many companies.

Plenty of fat to get rid of in large businesses but 9000 job losses will mean somewhere will close.

Probably to keep the company profitable which is kind of important. Unfortunate for the people involved though and the area.

Very empathetic! Staff who are forced to leave will struggle to earn what they do now. I feel for those affected. Hopefully they will be able to lessen the impact through voluntary redundancy and/or early retirement.

Am I correct in thinking it's VR? If that's the case there'll be plenty raising their hand for what will be a decent package.

The local Aerospace manufacturing sector, not exactly booming pre Covid, is now being decimated.

I work(ed) for a company in Darwen that makes aircraft parts for RR, BAE, Airbus, Safran etc and we're in the process of making 83 redundant (including myself), approx 1/3 of the workforce.

Obviously it's not just the manufacturers it impacts but all their suppliers and sub-contrators experiencing huge drops in demand for parts, materials and services.

They will ask for volunteers first but after 2 lots of VR last year they may not get many hands raised this time.

How many are in aerospace engineering and how many pay a similar salary? I don't think you understand the impact of these job losses to the wider economy.

206 announced for shop floor RR today, the technical and inspection staff reduction to be announced tomorrow apparently expected to be just under 50. RR have said that if 47 staff take voluntary furlough they will be returned to full pay next year!

Definitely doesn’t understand the industry, how many of those jobs will pay 40-50k which pays their mortgage

Hopefully a lot of the redundancies will be by voluntary severance. Sad times for the area..Rolls Barnoldswick has been steadily run down over the last few years with the out sourcing of work to different areas/ countries .No doubt there will be the inevitable knock on effect with the local sub contractors . I fear for the Barnoldswick factory's future, Hopefully things will work out in the long run as Rolls gave me a very good lifestyle for many a year.

Exactly. Just because you earn x amount it doesn’t mean you are always going to earn that amount or more unlike the public sector. Companies have to remain profitable and people can’t take it for granted they’ve a job for life or on the same terms. Expect the worse and cut the cloth accordingly as mentioned above. It’s sad to see large numbers go though in one business and it’s the knock on effect other on other local companies and services.

Over one million public sector jobs have been lost since 2010 and millions had their salary banding reduced and pay frozen. Many on the lower pay scales were hit the hard.

BTW: I don't work in the public sector, I run my own company. I just don't like seeing bull being posted in order to put one lot of people against another. Some people on here seem to specialise in this, but I don't, hence my concern over the RR job loses and for those who may end up being made compulsory redundant.

Speaking to a friend at weekend who works at RR, the redundancy package on offer is far from what it used to be, he doesn't think there will be many volunteering for redundancy

And who will buy their house? If a third of the Barnoldswick workforce is made redundant!
Granted not all rolls Royce workers live local, but what about all the other businesses in
Barnoldswick who rely on Rolls employee’s to spend their money locally, all the sub contractors,
Callendar, westons and many more!
This COVID pandemic is decimating the aero industry, with airlines strapped for cash, cancelling
and deferring orders for new aircraft.it could be many years before the industry recovers from
this setback. Indeed I fear it will never return to previous levels locally

I can give a little insight....2008 crash? My self employed work suffered. Struggled for a couple of years. So took an agency job cleaning at RR. The majority of the RR workforce I've encountered have the most entitled attitude I've ever come across in Employment. The "I'm Superior" comment still sits in the memory box. Main chat is "pensions and their shares" I was fortunate to meet some real good people there tbh. But my memory is of a load of entitled Lazy buggers.... who needed toilet training....Fact.

I have concern over the job losses if you read the whole post. I know of people and businesses that will be affected. I am referring to the expectation the salaries will be maintained or go up year on year. This is more the norm in the public sector whete there ‘pay grades’ etc. I’ve have witnessed this. It is most certainly not ‘bull’ unlike most of your posts.

Some of these workers will have mortgages running into 6 figures, this will be a disaster for them and their families.
With the aerospace industry on its knees similar job opportunities on the same pay scale will be more or less impossible to find.

Sorry you had to suffer attitudes like that Tim.. I left on voluntary severance after 35 years in 2001 after the 9/11 crash when the industry took a beating .All the cleaners we had were good lads/lasses and always had the banter with them, but nothing like you witnessed. In fact a lot of them got jobs on the shop floor.. This was before agency jobs was introduced. Since then things must have gone downhill . :(

There is always 2 sides to every story, I was working at RR when Tim was there, and most if not all the shop floor lads treated him well and polite, he even got work outside RR from them. It's a tragedy for anybody to lose there jobs.

I worked in public sector for 13 years and my salary never went above £19k pa and in the last 5 years there it was bloody frozen. I left because the pay did not warrant the additional workload we were getting as the Department was being cutback to the bone. Yeah but allow your prejudice against public sector workers to make it a them and us as per usual with this forum.

The land that the smaller of the two sites-Ghyll Brow- sits on would more than likely never be granted planning permission for housing, due to the massive amounts of acid used in fan blade production.

it's a drop in the ocean of what is to come globally and will involve many people being in a sorry state, particularly remainder of 2020 and through 2021, it is going to happen to many and jobs with similar incomes will be less than those seeking that slot. The bigger issue is whether it then spills over to cause further economic issues, mortgage defaults for example, people not buying new cars, each industry hard hit has it's own supply chain that will be equally hard hit.

The I'm OK Jack attitude helps no one and is just a kicking someone when they are down, using the axe and cost cutting is the easiest but least rewarding job in the world in my opinion and we need the people who create work opportunities to come to the front now, BD/Sales, self employed and entrepreneur help to drive the future. One thing this has taught us is around supply chain and relying on just in time strategy and cheap versus local is not always best, I think it will change in this respect and opportunities will appear. Of course nowhere near enough to combat the job losses but people will also have to adapt and look at potential changing there work skill sets.

As I mentioned met some real good lads there.... that's the other side to my story.but I stand by my comments... any way it's not a tragedy as such..like me they'll have to find alternative Employment and take a job maybe paying less money. And they'll be better off for it.. theres more to life than working long shifts in Factories.

That’s a very good point. My best mate works shifts in a factory. Twelve hours. Nights and days. Makes him miserable and he hates it. Never does anything about it.

Bet he hasn’t felt and slept this good in years.

Factories basically semi open prisons surrounded by big fences and patrolled by inept guards allowed out at the security gate for your conjugal rights till the next shift.....you'll earn a few quid but at what cost?

But did it ever go down ? It does in the private sector. Some small business owners take no salary if the business is struggling. It doesn’t apply in all cases but it’s the sense if entitlement I’m referring to as does Tim Noon above.

That’s a very good point. My best mate works shifts in a factory. Twelve hours. Nights and days. Makes him miserable and he hates it. Never does anything about it.

Bet he hasn’t felt and slept this good in years.

But did it ever go down ? It does in the private sector. Some small business owners take no salary if the business is struggling. It doesn’t apply in all cases but it’s the sense if entitlement I’m referring to as does Tim Noon above.
I worked at BT. Ok not quite public sector now but...

You had a guaranteed pay rise every year. But many who had been there years if they didn’t like what the current objectives were etc they’d down tools and there was very little that could be done about it.

You had new people coming in, hard workers, trying to make a difference / change how old processes were done etc but it was frowned upon and discouraged.

Very institutionalised in large parts. And possibly down to how old and stuffy it was in parts. All yearning for the ‘good old days’ of the 80s

That echoes with the good old “it’ll never go bust” Lucas Industries, so many people there couldn’t see that in order for it to survive the ethos needed to change, but they were happy taking the money and thought it was too big to die.

I worked for several of the businesses trying to make the change happen, it did for some - who were sold off, others just closed.

Institutionalised is a Very good point. My points about pensions chat at Big companies is you've signed your life away at say 35 for a few quid at retirement age if your lucky enough to get there...and fit enough to enjoy it. That's roughly 30 years walking the same walk with your sandwich box. Sometimes the Happiest people earn the least.

People who stay in a job they claim to hate are just bizarre.
I know I could go and earn more money than I do now, but the balance with work/life I've got now wouldn't be replicated if I went off to earn more money somewhere else, plus I enjoy working where I am.

Yep much the case there. Don’t get me wrong it’s a good company and there are some good people there. But an overwhelming majority just happy plodding along, hate embracing anything new and lead by a bullying old school culture of fear.

Glad I went there but even more glad I saw the light after twelve months. They used to say if you stay a couple of years you stay for ten. If you stay for five you never leave!

I think some people just like the routine or ‘security’ of it. Some are nervous of taking risks. And some just like to complain. Frustrating as he’s very clued up, brilliant with IT and computers and is a brilliant lad.

No it didn't go down, then again I don't think I had a wage cut in my 20 years in the private sector. Last 5 years been self employed and now at the mercy of the market, but I did have flexibility in helping my seriously ill and them terminally ill son with his care needs that I couldn't have done anywhere else. Yes I suppose some folk do have a sense of entitlement but not everybody thinks that way.

Tim, I take your point about all they talked about was their pension and share options,so far- but, I went to RR in 1977 as a 16 yr old straight from school, and at 18 you could join the company pension, but at 20, when you came out of your time, you HAD to join. No ifs no buts, it was compulsory. We were also "advised" at the same time, by the Works Union Convenor, to pay AVC's into the pension fund, as he was also a Trustee of the fund. As for shares, those of us that were there at the time in 1987, when the Company was de- nationalised, had a bumper time from it, and down the years were positively encouraged by company literature to participate in share-save schemes.
I left RR in 2014, aged 54, with VS, and a good pension, but I had saved from aged 18 to be able to it, albeit whilst on a decent wage, and profiting from the companies' performance on the stock market. Sometimes it is about choices, not just good fortune to be employed there. At 16 when I left school, I could have got numerous jobs on a lot more money than I got for being a RR apprentice, but I played the long game.

If he's one of those just staying cos of routine or security then if it was my mate I'd be telling him to shut up if he was complaining about how he hated it.
You're never in a job you hate unless you choose to be.

I could go out and earn 5-10k more than I do now, quite easily, but it would be at the expense of time I get with kids and it's not worth it for me.
I'm not unhappy with my job, I have a great time there but if it went downhill quality wise then I'd be off because people who're miserable at work usually take it out on others outside of work.

Yes.... Point taken with hindsight I should have said minority tbf. And as Barlick claret said I did get on with more or less everyone.maybe my judgement was clouded by the "mighty"'outfit I worked for.so to redress the balance there were only a few knobs worked there...... But you'll get that anywhere.so I apologise for my original comments....and hope everyone gets sorted.
