Barley

Post by Hbclaret007 » Thu Jun 04, 2020 9:48 am

Does anyone know if the car park at Barley is open?
I'm thinking of venturing out next week for a short walk.
Thanks

It was last week but was overflowing. I would recommend parking on the street outside the houses by the barley mow. No yellow lines or resident permit required and usually pretty easy to squeeze in there.

Do beware - some of the residents try to put up signs which try to give the impression that parking on the street is prohibited but it isn't.

If you knock on a few doors eventually someone will let you use their toilet as well, ensure though that they leave the house as you are social distancing dont forget don't take any lip from them.

It was crazy how busy it was on Pendle Hill the weekend just gone, it almost felt like I was on an organised tour there were so many people there.

I like to get up the hill at around 8am when you only see the odd walker or runner. I think the Cabin by the carpark opens at around lunch time for food and drink (even beers) probably not of interest on a day like today though. The Pendle inn has take away food and drink on a Thursday/Fri/Saturday (I think)

Just a word about waste though, whilst we're all here.

Please dont leave your rubbish strewn around the village. Residents are normally happy to dispose of surplus garbage if its left in asda carrier bags or the like, on the roadside where its easy for them to collect.

thanks.

I have emailed the club and they have agreed to put up a hugh screen in the carpark so we can safely watch the game from your car. I have tried this morning and can cofirm you can also see the screen from the road so get there early or late it as it doesn't matter you will still see the screen.
Top tip bring your dogs and let them roam free whilst you watch the game in peace, our canine friends deserve a day out.

Perhaps the good people of Barley will oblige by ensuring there is no lawn mowing done and if they have to watch repeats of countryfile whilst the match is on they keep the volume down and their windows closed.

All very amusing I'm sure.
I have been in several discussions with other locals and have called them out for their nimby attitude towards visitors.
The fact is, however, that there are some people who do think they can park anywhere, leave their rubbish anywhere, let their dogs crap anywhere and last week a broken bottle was found in the stream where the kids paddle.
Don't get me wrong - some of the locals think they own the countryside and have some sort of god given right to the place - but sometimes (and only sometimes) it is hard to argue with them.

I tend to drive to Barley and park near the Barley Mow so that I can walk up Pendle Hill whenever I have concerns about my eyesight

Absolutely, all villages have a similar mentality and I think it comes more from a community spirit and taking ownership of your area to ensure it remains a clean and safe environment. Plus you generally get older folk in quiet villages, I know that’s the case in mine. They’re terrible for picking dog crap up though, I don’t think it’s deliberate but they walk their dogs off the lead and don’t keep an eye on exactly what they are up to.

Earlier in the lockdown, just down from the car park on the roughlee road, a large sign saying “GO HOME - NHS workers live here” had been nailed to a tree. That’s been taken down now. Pendle Inn are serving take away food. Fish and chips £10. The cabin on the car par park is open for foot and take aways and the car parks open but no toilets.

I usually go up there on Friday night and leave my car in the perfect spot and get a lift back with the wife.
It's a lovely walk back up Saturday morning, collect the stuff from the boot, have a Barbie on top of the hill then an easy walk back to the car.

No probs.

I think it's brilliant how this thread is at the forefront of getting Barley back on its feet, promoting footfall to support local businesses in what is the gem of Pendle.

Pendle a bit too obvious
I walked over Gorple to Widdop Res
Barely a soul.
15 mile round trip from Halifax Road Nelson over to Worsthorne up Gorple Road over Gorple Moor down to Widdop Res back through Thursden Valley to Briercliffe back up to top of Harle Syke back down to Nelson

Very Scenic, took 4 hours plus
Nice walk from top of Harle Syke to Worsthorne Gorple very rugged with Giant boulders
Widdop Res looked amazing bathed in Sun
Thursden Valley is spectacular always nice walk back down to Nelson
Nelson so so
Doing it again this weekend setting off earlier to take in Hurstwood have dinner at Widdop weather permitting and then up to Bolulsworth summit from Thursden and then down to Coldwell Res

If you do your homework Bleeding, from Coldwell you can make your way to Catlow Bottoms.
From there you could either take the road to the Shooters or left to Briercliffe.
I'd carry on downstream to Walverden.

I was doing the Walverden Res up to Catlow and beyond last week (I do it quite often) and just up from the Res there was a black fella jogging with a young girl (presumably his daughter).

We exchanged the good mornings, but it was quite a smile moment for me being as it was so unexpected.

I'm very much a rookie when it comes to the walking game, but I'm trying to spend a bit more quality time with my girlfriend on her days off instead of lying around hungover  Think we're going to have a go at Clowbridge reservoir this weekend if the weathers not too bad.

Walking can be done in all weathers, all that needs to change is your clothing.

There's now a small hut on the farm track at the bottom of Pendle selling food/drink and importantly ice cream.

A friend noted the signs are done in the same paint as the 'Pendle closed' signs from a few weeks ago

'if you can't stop em--serve em'

The ice cream was good, looked like whippy but tasted real 😋

Yep gorgeous
Can imagine it being hard work on a bike fair old climb over Gorple and stony track
You can find a good road bike route around roughly the same area by turning left at the kettle drum over long causeway and turning back sharp left towards Widdop just before you drop into Heptonstall
Always feel for people on a bike coming the other way right at the bottom of the Thursden Valley, the vast majority are beaten by the step gradient of the first 50m

A few cars not made it though
Littered with chassis off the side of the drop
I think years ago before abs braking a number of cars did slide off with brake fade and in icy conditions before the barriers were made a BIT better.
Probably stolen cars dumped off there now
