Vole and Mole problems

Post by CaptainKirk » Thu Jun 04, 2020 8:44 pm

Anyone on here had any experience with either of these blighters?
Had moles in the past and got local farmer in to set traps.
Last few days has seen at least 20 holes appear in the lawn and am reliably informed it is voles this time.
Quick trawl on the web and you can get traps, poison or sonic blasters and was wondering if anyone had tried any of these?

We had this problem in our field. Didn’t want to use poison or traps, did a lot of googling around and stumbled upon an old farmer who swore by pickled onions. So everything a new mole hill appeared we uncovered the hole, popped a couple of pickled onions down there and covered it back up again. Took a few weeks but they did stop the moles. Seems they dint like the smell of them and they move on to new pastures.
So depends how you want to treat them I guess eh..

Good luck

Clearly the moles were eating the voles. Get the moles back. ;)

i once had them in a back garden, they wrecked the place. didnt fancy traps, so bought smoke cannisters specifically for the problem. the lawn from the back bedroom window resembled a war film with mudded mounds and plumes of smoke rising from them. Im sure the buggers were snuffing them out somehow, took about 5 days to claim victory. happy to say it didnt deter them too much, they just went next door and destroyed his pride and joy, and he was a rovers fan. the stuff i used was from mercers hardware store.

Having a ruddy nightmare with them at present.
Local folk round my area gave me this advice,
1. Get a cat (mine's presented 5 or so on the doorstep this year so far)
2. Pee down the hole
3. Garlic water down the hole and try growing garlic around the garden
4. Get some metal canes, stick them in the ground a foot or so and hang an empty tin (baked beans etc) on top of the canes, the vibration is said to deter.

I'm not at the swivel chair/lighthouse/12 bore 'garden like The Somme' stage yet, but I'm close.

Years ago when I lived in the UK, I always found moth balls(naphthalene) very effective. Not sure if they are still available though. I use to drop one in each site and within a few weeks, all traces of moles had disappeared.

So just to clarify you now have a garden with dead creatures you cat has killed lying about that stinks of p*ss with a hint of garlic and is full of baked bean cans on the end of sticks?

My glass is half full with the blood of the tribe of taupes, a war my people will win. The crops kneel as I walk by, I am a fair and just king according to the carrots and parsnip. The strawberries sing my praises throughout the acre. The asparagus will remember me long after the winter cometh and goeth. Lettuce weep tears of hope upon hearing my pee hitting the earth.

pest expert formula B PLUS ..........WE HAD A MAJOR INFESTATION AROUND 5 WEEKS AGO , I ORDERED THIS ONLINE AND IT KILLED THEM ALL IN A WEEK , WE HAVE HAD NO RE OCCURRENCE...

its a wheat like product you tip into each hole and then you have to cap of the hole with a bit of soil etc so the poisoned dying voles dont come out and then eaten by owls etc .....also try and keep the grass around the infestation really well cut as the hate coming out of holes withought any cover

Rubbish, don't listen to this townie, Tribesman, do you want to run the risk of leaving a few stray beans in the tin and having the swallows fart at you as they do the fly by?

Unwashed tins of used brine tuna is what you're after (Prince's work best). NEVER gaffa tape them to your roof, that's just asking for trouble. Hang them with nylon string from the guttering. You're welcome.

Absolute Tosh......

Plastic Ice Cream Cartons (Carte-Dor works best) superglued under the eaves with old CD's hanging on fishing line from them ... is definitely the best Anti-Swallow/Swift deterrent

That may rid him of the swallows but he's going to be up to his neck with warring monkeys within a week.

Now i have looked into this a little bit .
It seems that swallows leave a scent and thus the reason why they come back to the same spot every year .
Now in 12 years that they have been coming they have never managed to make a nest as i have always washed the mud away when they start to nest , so the idea that we raised chicks last year we will do the same next fails to hold water .
This year like every year i power washed the house , now i was the year to paint the outside also so with washing and painting sure how the hell could these birds smell anything yet they still return .
I think i get a pair who only last around 4 days then give up then another pair have a go and so on .
This is week 3 so i would say i have another week or so to go and then they will give up as they have to find a spot to nest otherwise they will run out of time to raise they chicks .
