Burnley heavy away defeats attended.

Following on from the article of Ten Burnley defeats that really hurt, I’d like to add my listing of Burnley’s heavy away defeats that I attended. All these games were in the 1st Division. I was a teenager at the time and everyone of these defeats hurt badly as did the ridicule from friends and workmates.

1966-67 season
Sheffield Wednesday away, 06 May, 1967. Lost 7-0. Clarets were 2-0 down at half time then 4-0 down after 48 minutes. Wednesday’s Jack Whitham scored 5 goals. This was an end of season game, Wednesday were in 12th position with Clarets in 13th position.

1967-68 season
West Bromwich Albion away, 11 November, 1967. Lost 8-1. Clarets were 5-0 down at half time. Clarets’ consolation goal came when Albion were leading 8-0. Going into the game Burnley were in 9th position whilst Albion were in 16th position, after 15 games.

1968-69 season
Manchester City away, 07 December, 1968. Lost 7-0. Going into the game, Clarets were in 8th position with City in 16th position, after 21 games.

Leeds away, 21 December, 1968. Lost 6-1. Clarets were 4-0 down at half time. Going into the game, Leeds were in 2nd position with Clarets in 10th position, after 23 games.

Clarets finished in 14th position in each of the above seasons and likewise in the 1969-70 season. In truth though, Clarets were progressively going downhill in those seasons and were eventually relegated in the 1970-71 season.

That was under Stan I think. Steve Morgan got sent off. Incidentally, this was the first game of the modern era that a yellow ball was used for winter football.

An awful effort where we never interested.
A blazing hot day capped off by Gooners fans with more faces than Big Ben chanting Wengers name less than a fortnight after demanding his sacking.

We were fighting for survival and when the score was still tight (when we might conceivably have been able to claw something back) I remember racing across the sparsely covered away terrace to retrieve the ball as quickly as possible in the hope that our donkeys on the pitch might salvage something.

Obviously I tripped on the shoddy, shallow terracing and endured the roaring laughter of the adjacent home crowd. I'm still not over it.

6-1 at Ipswich in 2003 when Branchy was playing CH. Sat in front of Rocky first half, decided to move at half time to give my ears a rest and ended up the seat behind Alastair Campbell.

Edit, think from memory it was actually Branch and Roche at CH that day.

It was 4-0, the Preston game was 4-1 when Eastwood gave us the lead.

That Fulham game was when Stan's response was: "It's not my team," but when you look at it he'd signed five of them, three had come through the youth system and the three he inherited were Ford, Cooke & Payton.

The 5-0 away at Forest on a Tuesday night lives long in the memory. As does the 5-0 at Wycombe.

The most gutless performance I can think of was a 4-0 hammering away at Leicester under Howe. We were completely disinterested from KO and Howe looked clueless.

Saw the 6-1 at Preston and a couple of the City drubbings. The 3-0 defeat at Bramhall Lane this season was more one sided and comprehensive than any of those.

Not heavy defeat but I was at the 5-6 match at Grimsby and remember trying to work out the score at half-time - we had lost count!
We actually should have won the game !!

My dad took me to that game.
Don't remember much about it, other than the Weds crowd celebrated loud and often.
The bus ride back to Buxton was miserable too, as it was full of there fans most the way.

If I recall accurately I think the 6 at Leeds was just three days after the defeat to Swindon in the 3rd game semi. Went to both and not a good feeling.

Having not attended a Burnley match for 5 or 6 years, my return to the terraces was an away game at Reading in either 1983 or 84; we were leading 1 - 0 at half time but went on to lose 5 - 1.

Saw both the 8-1 drubbing at WBA-Harry Thomson was shocking, and the 7-0 at QPR. Recall the young keeper coming off crying at QPR and our manager (either Adamson or Miller going over to put his arm round him). Saw a gutless performance at Coventry under Stan. THe team had just come back from a week in the sun-some preparation. Remember May was playing at the back roughly at the time him and Stan had had a big bust up. We certainly shipped some goals under Stan

That Coventry game was a real disappointment after the beano in Marbella. Both Robbie and Luke Chadwick mentioned it on their podcasts as being just a massive lash up. They had an early jog on the beach first thing, then they were on the ale all day and those attending at Highfield Road soon found out.

Not massively heavy defeats but 2 real no shows where both could have been cricket scores.
1st one was the Sunday afternoon away at WBA when we were beaten 4-0. Real poor performance and one of the very few under SD that we were total garbage.
2nd was the Boxing Day away at Hull. Needed the ark to get there in the 1st place then it was like our players were sea sick throughout the game. It was the season changer though so alls well that ends well #23unbeaten

My first 2 visits to Peterborough ended in 0-5 and 0-3 defeats, I missed the 2-0 win on a night match but saw us get a 2-2 draw
there with a late equaliser ...

5-0 at Deadwood under Stan was tough to take. For what ever reason he played Di Branchio at left back when he looked injured from the kick off. 4-0 down at half time at Southend wasn't much fun either.

I remember a 7 2 defeat at Wolves. As I walked away from the game a car came alongside me and the driver wound down his window, it was Nobby Stokes, he had started his teaching career at Wolverhampton Grammar and had been a fan of both teams. He suggested I should start supporting a decent team!

I didn't mind that 4-0 at Exeter. We had a great weekend. They were already down, we already in the play offs. They even gave us the home end so we got a drink in their club behind the stand before the game.

Not a Claret defeat but an anecdote which my eldest lad and I will never forget.

The only match I've got my wife to attend in 30 years of bliss was an away game played by Auxerre, the French team I, and consequently my two lads, follow. Obviously doesn't compare with Burnley but I like them all the same.

Lost 4-1 and quite honestly it could have been 14-1.

Anyway, in the car after - stuck in traffic - silence reigned. And then my wife said "Well, at least we saw five goals".

Auxerre - that’s a blast from the past. Remember seeing Liverpool beat them 3-0 at Anfield, reversing a 2-0 away in the first leg, UEFA cup about 1992.
