... When you cross a village green in Kent and there's a kid in an Arsenal top pretending to be Burnley and Ashley Barnes.

No, the grass wasn't particularly long, but it's a bumpy local village team pitch. A rough ride across on a bicycle. it's a shortcut I take to get to the village shop.
Perhaps Burnley are the team for the pitch, that they aspire to.

No, Frank... For a change I enjoyed the scene without Burnley comment.

Re: You know we're a big club when...
Chartham v. Whitstable is the grudge match. The standard is good, apart from the fans (:-)). They now put bunting along the touchline on the supporters side with the words 'respect' on each flag, so no more 'wanky wanky wanderers' taunts from me.
Now it's:
'Who's the vicar in the black?
Who's the vicar in the black?'
The pitch is next to the church, as it happens.

I have played on the Whitstable pitch - The Belmont - Ian Cox was there at one point. My local team is Herne Bay.
Re: You know we're a big club when...
I've got a friend who supports Herne Bay. He's about 6ft 8 and has the eyes of a shark, do you know him?

Re: You know we're a big club when...
One of my fav coastal cycle routes in the summer.. ..Whitstable -Herne Bay - Birchington on sea -Margate -Ramsgate. Spotted quite a few Clarets on the way ..
Re: You know we're a big club when...
I find the concrete section from Reculver to Birchington too bumpy for my road bike, so I get the train to Margate and then go round the coast to Broadstairs, have a swim, go in the gallery, sunbathe, it's great in the summer. I go nearly every day. I check the tide times website because at low tide, it's difficult to swim.
It's glorious.

Re: You know we're a big club when...
We stay at Birchington on sea and cycle to the crazy guys cafe at Reculver next to the Caravan Park..He's proper crackers, but his wife is a Yorkshire lass and okay.
We take our bikes on the train to whitstable or Ramsgate and cycle back as well
The path from Reculver to Birchington had been made much better last year when we went.
Love Broadstairs as well.

I've been in the cafe. It's a bit of a desolate coast though, hence the bouncing bomb tests there. I like sandy beaches and it's not really like that. Margate to Ramsgate is all sandy and the views are more interesting for me.
Mind you, I haven't been there for about 15 years, I just tend to go along my usual easy route.

Re: You know we're a big club when...
When I was 12 I did a triangle cycle ride from Whitstable to Birchington (as so many say a lovely ride) and then Birchington to Canterbury and finall back to Whitstable. I live 2 minutes walk from the Kings Hall in Herne Bay. Broadstairs has grown in popularity and there are several nice bays around there. Only been to the Herne Bay ground once and that was to see my granddaughter’s sports day - the football club used to have a very strange sign which said “No balls allowed on the pitch” ...... mmm ...... interesting !
Re: You know we're a big club when...
I haven't been to Herne Bay since I had the mad idea to just get on a bus and go somewhere, anywhere it fact, sometime during a storm in February. I couldn't get back to Canterbury quick enough. A car drenched me and the mouthful of poison puddle left me bedridden for about a month.
They could do with importing a sandy beach there. Nowadays it's feasible.
I think I've been to the Kings Hall, is to to the east next to a pub?
If so, I went to a conference there, to celebrate the centenary of Marcel Duchamps' stay in the resort (2013). They say his 'large glass' art work was based on the sash windows of the town.
A hundred years later, the ready-made message in a bottle gets found by Emin on a beach 15 miles east, and 'Oi saww samfing and put it in a gyallery. It's art becos oi sedditz arwt.'

Re: You know we're a big club when...
Marcel Duchamp lived in the house next door to mine - small world ! Yes you are right about the Kings Hall being near a pub. Herve Bay has always been in Whitstable’s shadow - my parents moved to Swalecliffe in 1968 and my wife and I moved to Herne Bay in 1999 as her student business was growing (not this year though) and we needed a bigger place. I do guided tours for students in Whitstable but would not move back there as it is too crowded.
Re: You know we're a big club when...
Canterbury is foreign student central, god knows the effect on the local economy, but they seem wealthy institutions so they probably have some reserve. A friend of mine in the business got a voluntary redundancy notice on his 50th birthday as a result of Covid-19.
I don't go to Whitstable very often now, the crab and winkle way is too much bother at my age after a few pints in the Neptune and I only just survived a 'last bus to Canterbury' journey last year by a whisker, so I keep away from there.
It's for couples really, small shops and stuff.
Keef, there are plenty of chimpanzees around, but these were 'nice' kids only about 10 years old.

Nearly all our students go to Canterbury on their last day - we get around 12,000 a year and they are good for the local economy (and our host families) - I know they can be a nuisance but they are an easy target for the local youths which is our biggest problem. I only go to Whitstable when doing yours now but I worked for a firm of accountants first 28 years. I presume You live in Canterbury or somewhere near ? My daughter moved there in March - the week before lockdown and we visited this week - wow the traffic was light !!

Re: You know we're a big club when...
Its a small world, I moved from Bookham in Surrey to Herne Bay when I was 10 in 1962, I was already a Burnley fan by then. I lived close to Winch's Field the home of "The Bay" and became a fan at an early age, almost as long as I have supported the Clarets. I had some great times there and served on the Committee for a couple of years, the local derby against Whitstable was always a "tense" affair!! I still follow the Bay and go to watch them when I am visiting family down that neck of the woods.
I lived in Herne Bay for 17 years and went to school in Canterbury until 1967. I married in 1974 and moved to Ramsgate in 1978 then onto Broadstairs where I lived for 26 years. My last place of work was in Birchington on Sea, five years ago I retired to Rochdale ( some people say WHY?) to be much nearer to Turf Moor.......oh and the Grandchildren, of course!
