Absolutely. Seems pretty clear to me too.

So how do you define a racist shop? Unless of course the guy behind the counter was handing out EDL leaflets or wearing a white hood?

Shops can't be racist as they are buildings. People who own and operate out of the shops may well be though. Businesses that use slave labour or other exploitative means for financial gain, for example, could quite rightly be classed as 'racist'.

He left the comments very open to interpretation or maybe you're just interpreting his speech how you want to hear it.

He will be booed in his next fight and rightly so unless he explains what he meant and apologies.

I think with the enormous negative criticism Joshua has received today he needs to come out very soon to explain exactly what he meant by that paragraph.
Otherwise people's interpretation, and the damage it has done, will remain unchanged.
That would be a shame as the rest of his speech is well written and very refreshing

Edit: sorry boyo, didn't see your post

Maybe he did leave his comments open to interpretation, bear in mind he's a boxer not a public speaker. I'd suggest that out of the two of us you are interpreting his speech how you want to hear it, because he didn't say don't spend your money in white-owned businesses. He also didn't say ONLY spend your money in black-owned businesses despite several people claiming so on this thread.

Maybe he will be booed, who cares? That doesn't prove that your interpretation of his comments his correct. Boxing crowds aren't generally renowned for their intellect and sports fans are tribal. Perfect example, a lot of Brighton fans hate Rodriguez, a lot of Burnley fans hate Bong.

Very clumsy wording by using the word ‘their’.

sorry Rileybobs, its stretching things a wee bit just asking people to ignore such a specific word. "their" is unambiguoius surely.

The Sunday Times report:

Anthony Joshua: looting and gang war won’t help George Floyd’s family

Anthony Joshua launched an impassioned plea to stop any rioting and looting in the continued fallout of the death of George Floyd, during the Black Lives Matter protest in Watford yesterday.

In his powerful speech — later posted on his Instagram account — to hundreds of peaceful protestors, he called for an end to black youth gang-culture in light of the reaction to the death of Floyd, an unarmed black man who died in Minneapolis on May 25 when Derek Chauvin, a police officer, put a knee to his throat for almost nine minutes.

“George Floyd was a catalyst in a list that is way, way, way too long,” Joshua said. “Ask yourself a question, how does the looting for the latest flat-screen TV help him or his family?

“How does burning down shops and taking another life stop the virus spreading, and remember, the virus we are talking about is racism. We need to be united in non-violent demonstrations. Show them where it hurts. Abstain from spending money in their shops and economies and invest in black-owned business. We have to engage with the youth and put an end to black youth gang-culture.

“I’m going to be real with you about gang culture, you have to realise it is done. I know I’m not promoting any gangster business. I’m a legit, straightforward hustler, that’s in my DNA and my blood but I’ve taken my street knowledge and put it in the corporate world.

“This postcode war. How many houses do we own on that postcode we’re fighting for? Every life matters, 100 per cent I agree with that, but that does include black lives.

“We can no longer from today onwards sit back and remain silent on the senseless, unlawful killings, sly racism of another human being, based only on what? Their skin colour.

“We need to speak out at peaceful demonstrations, so well done Watford, inject the vaccine. We must not use a demonstration for selfish motives and turn it into rioting and looting.”

The IBF, WBA, and WBO world champion attended the event with his left leg in a brace that was described as precautionary and of no immediate concern by a spokesman.

*********************

I agree with ST, Joshua has made a "powerful speech." Stopping "rioting and looting" is a good thing. Encouraging "non-violent demonstrations" is a good thing. Promotion and development of "black-owned business" is a good thing.
This is what I see too.

Education and investment is what I believe he is saying in reference to “black businesses.” Especially if those businesses support the local communities by giving back and reinvesting in such communities.

The “abstain from spending in those businesses” can be taken whichever way you want, especially if it’s taken out of context. Sure you can twist it to mean “white businesses.” However he probably means avoiding those businesses that have origins in slavery or inequality.

I’m not asking people to ignore it. I’m explaining my interpretation of Joshua’s comment, which in the context of the whole speech seems a leap to conclude that he was referring to businesses owned by white people.

Their and them I take to being aimed at overt racists and institutional racism. He says not to protest by looting and any criminal activity. If you want to protest, protest by buying goods from black owned businesses. You know, like we have said recently don’t buy from China. At the time of the Falklands war it was don’t buy from or trade with Argentina. Fishing rights, Brexit and no doubt several other examples where people have said just buy British. Was all that racist language. Some people have very questionable agendas. And very selective memories.

Feel a bit sorry for Joshua and he has been poorly advised in attending this and speaking utter crap.
Michael Jordan got criticised in the 90s for not speaking up for a black politician who was running against a white politician with racist views.

Jordan wasnt into politics and didnt comment. Probably a very wise move that Joshua wouldve been wise to follow.

First time I have seen this.

Looking at it it appears he is reading someone elses script. Which is daft, particularly if he hasnt read or prepared for it.

A lot of what he says its actually true.

But the biggest problem. Isnt what he says. Its the fact that he is there and promoting mass gatherings at a time when people havent been able to see their parents, have attended funerals alone, births alone, cant put their kids in school and have lost their jobs and their future.

Thats whats most wrong.

BAME prepared to put themselves at risk of both pandemics. Anyone who attended the protests did so of their own freewill. If you are self isolating, social distancing and taking all reasonable steps you’re not at serious risk of a second spike. Well no more so than those on the beaches or out and ignoring social distancing advice. Football starts in 10 days time. Some people think that there are good reasons to not put off protesting against blatant racism any longer. I chose not to attend but fully support anyone who did choose to attend. The looters will be out in force whenever there are big crowds to assist in a reduction of policing efficiency.

Perhaps not. But we are at risk of not being able to go back to work. Or see family. Or attend 'normal' events! All because some selfish f**kers, who in most cases probably dont even know what or why they are protesting for have jeopordised everything that has been done for the last 12 weeks!

As I posted.

SOME selfish f**kers, who in MOST cases.

And, for that matter. Yes. Everyone of the protesters is a selfish fker.

In a generation where there are a million and one ways to make a point. They’ve ALL decided to risk the health and safety of EVERYONE through their actions.

12 weeks we have locked down. 12 weeks people have missed funerals. Missed births. Lost jobs. And will suffer for years to come.

Yet opportunists and morons jeopardise all that.

The irony is black and ethnic minority communities are at highest risk of contracting and dying from the diesease.

Perhaps a letter to the government demanding better protection against the virus should be penned...

They’ve all used the whole thing as an excuse. Tarnished the mans name. Through protests, looting and rioting. And the jeopardised the health of the nation in the middle of the worse pandemic in a century.

Just mentioned on another thread- couple of extended family members were going to join the protests in Bristol today but the St Pauls community requested folk not too due to corona. So they decided against. I'm really proud of these fabulous young people on which our future lies.

Doesn't matter if they know why they're protesting. With the Coronavirus still out there, they should be more responsible and not attrending mass gatherings. The incident didn't even happen in this countr so why the need to protest over here unless they think our police force are the same. I think the point he was trying to get across is that a lot of the protesters are just jumping on the bandwagon and don't really care what the protest is about.

I find it ironic that with the Coronavirus affecting black people more than white that they'd put themselves in a position to risk catching it. Maybe they should be protesting about the virus being racist as well

If our “future lies” in the hands of this rabble we are well and truly stuffed.

Read what chadders actually said. The whole thing. Even you'll get it eventually.

In the main not a lot. I’ll advised mind.

The biggest problem is that he’s there, encouraging huge gatherings at a time of our biggest ever health crisis.

"the only disease right now is the racism that we are fighting"

Raheem view. Just as he was winning the fans over he opens his mouth and ruins it.

And there I was thinking I lived in the UK leaders of democracy and all along I have been living in the USSR

sorry wasn't clear enough-I meant two young members of my extended family who really wanted to support their fiends but having listened to members of the St Pauls community decided against. I am really proud of them. There will no doubt be another day to show their support.

Why would anyone want to live in thie UK. We are anti European, racist, can't control a pandemic despite forcing people into lock down, don't support or give enough money to anyone or anything and have a clueless government who are to blame for everything.

Thank god I live on an island and don't have to worry about it.

You forgot to mention a lack of help for the mentally ill, which is evident in your post.

It is something everyone should be worried about - It takes a level of empathy and a willingness to listen to understand a perspective (experience!) that is vastly different to our own. Anyone who wants to consider such a different perspective might want to give this series of Podcasts a try - it is truly fascinating and eye-opening

Empathy is a great trait to have. Thankfully I do have plenty. I don’t believe the protesters do though.
